I went out last night for the first time in ages.
I just don't know how many calories i consumed, and i'd really like to know!
I drank:
- 3 x diet coke and vodka
- 1 x sex on the beach cocktail (im not even sure whats in this!)
- 2 x blueberry shots (they looked like bright blue, like alcopop coloured)
- 1 x Vodka and small amount of blackcurrent squash
Can you give me some help? =)

Ok, we shouldn't judge Katydalt for drinking.... thats not what this website about (passing judgement on people). I think its great that you, katydalt, felt comfortable to come on here and say what you wanted to say. Its called freedom.
Another thing.... no one is perfect and we really don't have the right to play god and tell others what to do and what it right or wrong. Katydalt, your drinking wasn't "light" per se, but thats up to you to decide for yourself. Naturally, just be careful since you ARE underage and the police can be harsh like that!

THANKYOU!!
It means a lot to me that someone wanted to stand up for me.
Thanks a lot.

sure, Katydalt.... thats why these posts are open for everyone... so that people can support eachother!!! I feel like everyone is so quick to tell others that they are doing something "wrong", you know? I hate when my friends do that... it makes me just want to keep everything inside and not say anything!
i know exactly what you mean!
it's like i dont talk to anyone about my eating habits, and as i dont know anyone on this site, i can be so open about a lot of things.
its really helpful but its hurtful when someone judges me here aswell.

Totally! I'm a recovering anorexic and anorexia really destroyed alot of the relationships that I had with my "friends". They couldn't understand what I was going through and tried to parent me to no end. I mean, I know that they were concerned, but some people really don't know the right way to show it! They all treated me like such a suspect or like a criminal.... like everything that I was doing was wrong. It made me feel guilty and angry but it didn't make me stop being anorexic. I stopped because my weight went down to a dangerous number and because it was hurting my family.
As far as your eating habits, how are you doing with everything at this point?

its not a cultural barrier. i also live in europe in spain and am 18, which is legal drinking age really, but really you can be 15-16 and get into bars and have drinks. i started at 17. it seems like you can't handle your alcohol though to drink so much and not consider it heavy drinking. as someone else said, 2-3 drinks is usually whats within normal, not 7, and thats anywhere you go. even england, britain wherever you say you are from.
also i do notice you say its not a habit, which is good. so don't think im exactly jumping on you. to be honest, i know alot of older people (21-23) who i'll go out with and theyll do 20 shots plus regular drinks, and thats atleast 3 times a week.

Yeah, i've lost a bit of weight. (people have told me so aswell)
And, as far as eating goes, i didnt want to bring it up again, but in short im an under-eater.

I don't think you are naive. Sorry about my knee-jerk comment; I'm the mom of teens and so I worry. Especially since, yes, I drank when I was underaged.
I highly recommend the book The Primal Teen. It outlines new research coming out about how the teen brain undergoes amazing growth - more rapid and astounding than when you were an infant!! Previously, we all thought the brain stopped growing more or less after the first few years. Now we know better - it undergoes a second, MORE major growth spurt from around age 12 to 21.
According to the authors, even one single ounce of alcohol on the brain during these years can affect its development! I'm not making this up. It horrified me when I read this, thinking what the heck I did to my brain back then.... how much smarter I *could have* been!
Anyway, get a copy of the book. It has other stuff in there (aside from alcohol) that is quite fascinating. But ultimately it is your brain and your body, so your decision to make. That's what I've told my own kids, after making them read this book. The message is pretty simple: if you want to be the smartest you can be, don't touch a drop of alcohol until you turn 21.

I think suggesting she's on the path to alcoholism might be a tad early. Like a few years and a few hard liquor bottles. Social drinking =/= alcoholism. It's just such a serious thing to pin on someone who is doing what thousands of other teens are doing, and what thousands of adults who turned out fine did in their teens.
Also, the underage thing is subjective, since 21 is the highest I think it gets. It's 19 in Ontario and 18 in Quebec, which are just a driving distance away. I will be legally allowed to drink here in 6 months, but if I mention that I drink on these forums will I be told I'm being irresponsible and drinking underage?
That said, Jenmcc is right. Alcohol does affect the development of the brain and if stopping is not an option, limiting alcohol intake severely is always a good idea! (Not only for teens, actually. ;))

my second year of college i partied A LOT. it's not that big a deal. I grew out of it within a year. I'm still in college and every other month or so i'll have 4 to 6 drinks or so in one night (cuz i know my limit and that's it. ha) most of my friends have limits a lot higher.
partying is what college students do.
drinking to get drunk in a social setting is what we do.
just as long as we're smart about it and don't get in a car and drive or make ourselves blackout or be stupid
katy, You won't lose that many braincells for drinking or get dumb as people are implying. i promise. especially since you said you don't do it often.
i'm graduating with a 3.2 (if not higher) in may and i went through an entire year where i drank 5 drinks twice a week sophomore year. if you ask me, getting boyfriends who you want to give as much attention as possible to is more dangerous than alcohol when it comes to being smarter. haha.
clearly we know it's not good for our bodies to drink often. and i knew that while i was partying like i did sophomore year. but it's not uncommon. i grew out of it.
i was pretty offended by the attacks on katy. this is a forum about helping, not judging

um thisisreal4ever im a "teen/college student." 18. and partying is not what i do. and if i go out i don't drink just cause im in a social situation. thats like just eating cause someone offers me a donut. i have more control than that. so speak for yourself. and alot of times when people think their being "smartest" about something, especially when their young, their just being dumb. i don't think the girl has a severe drinking problem either but i think your statements sound extremely juvenille. i have had a few drinks since i'm of legal age where i live but i actually wish i hadn't cause i want my brain at its full potential. 3.2 gpa doesn't equal smart. 4.0 doesn't equal smart. alot of times it just means you can study and kiss teacher ass. i know alot of honor roll people who have no sense in life, and constantly drink also. so grades really mean nothing in life. and i'm not attempting to judge or attak you if it comes off that way.
I suppose I should say something about my earlier posts.
I don't mean to attack Katy, but I do find her statements to be quite naive. Is being supportive providing a 16 year old with the calorie information in 7 alcoholic drinks? (so we can only assume that she'll do it again?)
Fine. Okay. A good rule of thumb is that 1 alcoholic drink is ~100 cals. You're may have been just less than that. Perhaps 500-600 cals for the evening.
So go drink to your liver's content.

like, i said, i'm not supporting heavy drinking. but i also don't think that drinking at any time is not having control.
there IS a culture difference between how we look at 16yr olds where we are and the way 16 yr olds are percieved where she is.
people do different things in social settings. it's not wrong. i actually eat a lot more in social settings. it doesnt mean i dont have control. it just means i don't go out often and when i do i want to have a good time.
and even if you didn't mean to sound like you're attacking me you did. cuz you basically just told me i don't try in school when i have 12 classes a semester and i work REALLY hard and actually never talk to my teachers outside of class or even in class unless it's regarding my school work. i wasn't trying to show off that i have a good GPA. i was just saying that my drinking sophomore year didn't effect my development.
drinking isn't wrong. HEAVY drinking is unhealthy.
I think we should just stop attacking or judging one another and just support. we're all getting way too defensive and i'm sorry if i came off like a jerk in my last post to anyone I may have offended especially to pinthin and a preemptive sorry to jenmcc who is a worrying mother.
i'll just stop now. sorry :/

okay just to clarify since i dont know you i wasnt really saying the bit about people not trying in school in reference to your academic performance in specific. i was just saying that a high gpa dosen't solidly equal smart each time. through my experience i've just known alot of drunks who barely study and just kiss up to teachers and make high honors more due to their manipulative people skills rather than their mental skills. so i was mostly using thse people as a reference, not specifically saying you don't try in school, but just trying to point out high gpa isn't neccesairily equivalent to high mental skills. sorry if it came off that way.
I just wanted to point out something real quickly, because I'm tired of this kind of stuff....
The original topic of this post was calories in alcoholic drinks.
Whether you're straight-edge or a drinker, it doesn't matter. The straight-edge people shouldn't hate on the drinkers, and vice-versa. I'm a straight-edge vegetarian, but that doesn't mean that I hate people who drink or eat meat. I like to think that this is what works for me, and that's all there is to it. Please refrain from imposing views on others, because it just grates nerves more than anything.
As for the calories:
1 vodka & diet coke: ~64 calories per shot of vodka (how big were these?)
1 sex on the beach: 274 calories
1 blueberry shot: let's say 100 calories
1 vodka/blackcurrent squash: 100-150 calories
How's that?

mmm, they all sound good, especially if balanced with real food so they don't go straight to the head (light headed) or digest too quickly and get you too drunk. Over a whole evening? A good party, yeah, I can see sampling some fun drinks :)
Hey guys, give Katy a bit of a break here. As someone who grew up in England, but came to the States when I was 20, I have seen the huge culture difference when it comes to drinking.
My mum took me to the pub when I was 14 and I was allowed 1/2 pint beer. I think the 21 legal drinking age in America is a too stiff. It's ridiculous to me that you're allowed to die for your country and vote for a president at 18, but not allowed to have a glass of wine.

woooah, this really got out of hand didn't it?
some of sure do get touchy about calories in fluids.
I am a college student just so you all know.
Ages are different here in England - all of the teenagers are very mature and we know what we're doing.
I generally am friends with people who are older than me mostly.
Thanks elainemiller, you're helping me proove my culture difference point!!
