Why does this keep happening?

Quote  |  Reply

Right, this is difficult to explain...but at around 11 am or 1pm I get the weirdest hunger pangs ever-they literally cry out-GIVE ME FOOD NOW!

This only happens on days where i've been in lectures, or seminars or working in the library.

I would understand it if i was starving myself...but i'm not.

I eat like 3000-500 cals of breakfast because I'm hungry in the morning, normally at 8am, and this is a big bowl of porridge with honey, cinnamon n sultana's...sometime ill have a slice of toast if i'm not full after this...

Please explain why 3 hours later, I'm not just hungry I am ravenous...like starving...is this normal...?

sorry meant to say 300 cals not 3,000- that would be weird...and also tried solving the 11am hunger with a breakfast bar-but i'm still hungry- so end up eating like 600 cals of food because i am so hungry at that time

your breakfast is pretty carb-filled (sugary). try eating some more protein and fats in the morning to keep you feeling full longer! maybe some eggs, yogurt, nuts? you can eat your porridge, but balance it out with some protein and fats on the side.

Personally I am always ravenous after I eat oatmeal. No idea why.  It's like the carbs go right through me...  I know a lot of other people say the same thing about apples, that they will be hungrier after eating an apple than before.

What you need to do is make sure you eat protein at every meal.  You could try stirring a couple of tbsp of whey powder into your oatmeal, or adding something else high protein into it.  It's the mixture of protein/carbs/fats that will keep you fuller for longest time.  For fats you could use a flax seed oil (or even cream!).

One breakfast that always keeps me going for hours is toast with PB and banana. You just have to experiment and find out what works for you!

J, I promise this will work. Everyone is right. Fibre and Protein=Full

I used to have the exact same problem. Now this is what I do.

My breakfast choices are:

Peanut Butter and banana sandwich on whole wheat bread. (and I eat the leftover banana of course) OR

Breakfast Wrap: In a wheat wrap have two eggs scrambled, a sprinkling of low fat cheddar, and a teaspoon of salsa.

Kellogs All-Bran Bars with and TBSP of peanut butter spread on top, with a cup of oatmeal. (I use the quaker instant oatmeals)

I gotta tell you, one I added FIBRE and PROTIEN, my hunger pangs have gone away. About 2- 2 1/2 hours later I always have a snack. Fruit, Granola Bar, Low Calorie Muffin, Trail Mix, 100 cal snack pack of your choice. Then two hours after that it's lunch time. Generally around 3 or 4 I have another little snack and by 6 I'm eating dinner and never hungry afterwards.

Now that I have perfected my daytime diet, I need to get rid of my chocolate craving after dinner. Not cause I'm hungry at all, just cause I WANT IT. LOL

Hope this helps somewhat.

Yes yes yes. Fibre + Protein!

But it is also perfectly normal to be hungry 3 hours after eating. Which is why you should have yourself a snack that also has protein & fibre in it to hold you off until lunch. That's why you'll always hear the recommendation of eating many small meals throughout the day.  Have yourself a second breakfast (or an elevenses!)!

By adding in snacks your blood sugar levels will stay more stable and you are going to be less likely to 'crash' and go on an eating spree.

Also make sure you aren't dehydrated. Sometimes dehydration can be mistaken for hunger!

protein is KEY. i used to do carb-based b/fast, like some kind of cereal, and 2 hrs later i'd be hungry enough to eat my own arm. now, my breakfast is usually an english muffin w/ some egg beaters, and that lasts me 6 hours. yeah, six.
