PI DAY

18 Replies (last)
For an extra credit option in her high school chemistry class, my daughter had the option to make a pie for pi day a couple of years ago.

And the recipe given to the students to use had Ritz crackers and I can't remember what else and yet...smelled like apple pie baking.

It was cool and she had fun with it.  And now, she remembers pi very well!
My favorite holiday! Haha, and I even have a math class this semester, BUT WE DON'T HAVE SCHOOL! What is that?

But I think no school might be better than pi day....
Today would be a good day to be in San Fran. We could go to the Exploritroium and have Pie.

I've made this pie ~ pre lifestyle change and it does taste and smell like Apple Pie:

Ritz Mock Apple Pie

The classic pie, featuring Ritz crackers baked in a golden crust,
is perfect for the holidays.

Pastry for two-crust 9-inch pie
36 RITZ Crackers, coarsely broken (about 1 3/4 cups crumbs)
1 3/4 cups water
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Grated peel of one lemon
2 tablespoons margarine or butter
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1. Roll out half the pastry and line a 9-inch pie plate. Place
cracker crumbs in prepared crust; set aside.

2. Heat water, sugar and cream of tartar to a boil in saucepan
over high heat; simmer for 15 minutes. Add lemon juice and peel;
cool.

3. Pour syrup over cracker crumbs. Dot with margarine or butter;
sprinkle with cinnamon. Roll out remaining pastry; place over pie.
Trim, seal and flute edges. Slit top crust to allow steam to escape.

4. Bake at 425 F for 30 to 35 minutes or until crust is crisp
and golden. Cool completely.

Makes 10 servings

one of my dorky school teacher friends had something about pi day in her facebook status yesterday.  i thought she'd made it up; apparently not!!  i'm surprised i've never heard of it, because my dad is a total science dork and today is his birthday (it's also Einstein's birthday!).
There's a car around here somewhere and the license plate is PI 3 and then in graphics all around the card is the .14 and the rest of the numbers.  It's almost as disturbing as the snot rod.  I've already almost slammed into a stop sign staring at it.

I'd never heard of it either until my daughter was so excited to tell me that they were having pie at school today.  I asked why?  And she proceeded to tell me, "well tomorrow is 3/14, you know pi".  How come we never had pie at school?!

maybe because when we were in school they were more concerned with teaching us how to use pi than how to make & eat pie.  remember when school wasn't supposed to be fun, and if you didn't like it you could drop out and be a mechanic?

It's only a couple of days before the Ides of March and that's not a fun holiday

Snot rod?  My curiosity is piqued.

Man, my trig teacher went all out on Pi Day. She had us bring in all circle foods (pizza, cookies, cake, etc. - surprisingly, no pie, though).

Then, she had us do an activity where we designed an airplane made from a bendy straw, tape, and 3 strips of paper to make round "propellers" for it. Whoever's plane flew the farthest (from the roof, haa) got a prize. I was surprised the dorky little things worked - pretty well, actually.
Happy Pi Day! From this Math/CS geek to you!

One of my profs brought pie to class today, for supper I made a vegetable pie with blueberry turnovers for dessert. There is a big pi potluck tonight (that I'm missing to study) and the world is just full of pi joy.

Also I think I've said pi about a hundred times today, if not more.

Tis a beautfiful number. not quite phi, but pretty cool.
lol. The prof also tried to lead us into singing a rendition of happy birthday to einstein, but instead we just watched youtube videos.

Why March is just chock full of fascinating "holidays"; Pi day (Einstein's Birthday?), the Ides of March (let's all wear togas), St. Patrick's Day (how many green foods can you make/eat/drink in a day) and last ...but not least... the vernal equinox (the start of the solar year)  With just a little effort, we could keep this going all the way to Easter!

 LOL!

LOL!

March is my birthmonth, therefore the best month possible.

3/14 is yet another day besides 'pi day' - it's one month after valentines day, and some couple celebrate it is a 'valentines' day for the guys, since girls get all the fun on valentines.  We celebrated yesterday with great big grilled steaks (I only ate half of mine) and baked potatoes.  The actual name of the 'holiday' isn't actually minor friendly, so I won't name it here. ;)

Pi r ROUND!!!

Too bad I wasn't on campus yesterday, I could have eaten at the Pi R Square place in one of the science buildings.
