Happy veg life...

Quote  |  Reply

There's too much drama on this board! We need some positivity! One of the vegan communities I'm in on livejournal does this... members post their "Happy vegan life is...." when they have something positive to say and I think we should do this too!

It's obviously not just something for the vegans, what are your happy vegetarian or happy pescatarian, or happy flexitarian etc. etc. moments?

Happy vegan life is... being able to eat a LOT of whole foods for 1200 calories.  I'm still in love with my life change from a junk food vegan 10 months ago to the healthy way I eat now. Laughing

Happy veg life is tofu and black beans mmMM
Happy veg life is sitting down to a meal cooked from scratch from perfectly seasonal ingredients. It's even happier with a bottle of wine and some friends!
Happy vegan life is... pumpkin coffee, turbinado sugar and a splash of soymilk- made by my husband and waiting for me when I woke up.
Happy life is perfectly steamed broccoli with just a quick shake of celtic sea salt

:)
My happy moments are every Saturday morning when I go to the local Grower's Market.  All the Amish and organic farmers sell what they grow.  I'm glorying in all the varieties of squash, leafy greens, and the abundance of apples and pears, all grown without pesticides.  I love it!

Um, a lot of organic produce does use pesticides, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Amish do as well.

dm84 this is the "happy life" thread, take your negativity somewhere else! Tongue out

Lol, I'm not trying to be negative. I'm perfectly happy saving $2/lb on conventional produce.

Happiness is finding a 31 pound locally grown organic watermelon at the farmer's market, and paying only $5.00 for it!  That really happened to me about a month ago.  I'd been really enjoying delicious organic watermelons all summer, but that one was definitely the cheapest!

Meanwhile, a friend of mine had been complaining about how she hadn't been able to get a decent watermelon all summer, and everytime she bought one it was a big disappointment to both her and her husband.  We figured out that she hadn't tried any organic ones, and I told her she should try buying an organic one.  Well, she ended up buying one at Whole Foods, and her husband liked it so much that he ate the whole thing himself while she wasn't home, and didn't leave any for her!

cbullock ever since a local farmer helped me carry my purchases to my car and saw my "Support Local Organic Farmers" bumper sticker he's been hooking it up like crazy! My last purchases from him should have been $15 and he charged me $5! Now that's HAPPY ORGANIC LIFE.

:D

Your poor friend, I hope she got another watermelon and got to have some!

Happiness is not having to stress as much about the foods that I eat, and the harm they may be doing to my body.

Knowing that my organic produce only has pesticides derived from natural sources, applied with machinery and planted on land that has had no contact with synthetic, carcinogenic chemicals or pesticides for 3 years.  Knowing that the food that I nourish my body with is FOOD, not a chem lab experiment, not a fake material that no one has had the time to truly study the long term affects of on me and on the environment.

:D

lol. Heroin is derived from natural sources. I guess that makes it good for me?

Some organic pesticides have been found to be as harmful or more harmful than the synthetic ones.

Btw, I don't stress about the food I eat either. A conventionally grown apple is still an apple.

dm84, I fully encourage you to eat all the chemically synthesized pesticides, chemically altered and hormone laden food that you want, since you are clearly so very fond of it.  I choose otherwise for myself, as do many others whether they are hervibore or not.  I sincerely doubt you will be changing any of our minds any time soon, no matter how often you endeavor to try.  I know every time you post it makes me chuckle.  So please, come back often, because it reminds many of us why we are happy to make the choices that we do, and strengthens our resolve to continue on our chosen paths.  I think you may have even turned a few skeptics into vegetarians over the months.  You help the cause more than you can imagine.  :)

Happy veg life is being reminded of how wonderful simple foods taste on the tounge, like ripe strawberries and creamy avocado.  (Not together, of course! :) )

I'm not really trying to change anyone's mind, but some of the pro-organic propaganda being posted here is borderline ridiculous.

The first natural pesticide used in farming is something called Lead. It was in the earth long before synthetic pesticides were created.

If you actually bothered to read any of the links I posted, instead of outright dismissing my posts as entertainment, you would see that the organic pesticides have the ability to harm the environment more than some conventional ones. Essentially you are paying more money for produce that is nutritionally equivalent, and which utilizes pesticides that may be more harmful for the environment.

Is that a problem? No.

Is it a waste of money? IMO, yes. Not every one has an unlimited supply of money to spend on more expensive, but nutritionally equivalent produce.

This thread is about living a happy life...and things that make us all happy. How about we keep it light and fun and talk about things that make us smile?

Happy vegan life is... not talking about pesticides or anything else with the potential to be negative in this thread, haha  Laughing

It's also about amazing vegan blueberry banana pancakes with pure maple syrup...and also making some delicious and healthy dish and having other people try something new and love it!

Fair enough. What's the recipe for the pancakes?

HAHA, David, you're such a drama magnet. :)

I do partly agree with you on the subject of how 'organic' organic things claim to be. I buy produce based on its ripeness, appearance, and price, not some 'organic' sticker. I don't think organic or non-organic makes a huge difference in the long run, anyhow.

But one of my happy vegetarian moments is having the excuse to eat peanut butter often. ;) It has some good protein and manganese.
I eat like 2 tbsp of peanut butter a day and another 2 oz of peanuts or cashews. I'd try cashew butter but it's too expensive.

dm84, you can grind your own cashew butter at a Whole Foods, when I just wanted to try a little they showed me how and I made a teeny tiny bit, maybe 3 tbsp worth.

Happy veg life is... my history teacher thinking of me and bringing me an article on Dr. Sylvester Graham, inventor of the same name cracker- and vegetarian! The good doctor wanted to cure everything from pimples to alcoholism in the 1840's with a diet of only vegetables, fruits, and whole wheat!

In the same class we were talking about modern day "reform groups" because we were talking about the Age of Reform, and my teacher brought up animal rights. We even watched an online piece from the local Houston news on their animal control officers.  I was so happy this was all being discussed until someone actually said "Michael Vick is so cool" and about 70% of the class laughed.

By the way, original graham crackers were made of coarsely ground whole grain flour only, no sugar! Tongue out
