well, to those who may have read my 'newbie' posting a week ago, heres a great big thank you to the site and to those who have posted replies to me. my first week, having stuck rigidly to all the advice, and definately not starving has yielded a 6 pound weight loss. i have been looking at 2-3 lb but given that i weighed in three weeks ago at 294 lb i'm well happy. have lost total of 9 lb in 20 days so the latest spurt means around the 3lb a week level im seeking. ta to you all. geoff uk

thanks mate. am well pleased. the main difference this time, using the site is that i keep a good close eye on the type of day im having with regards to carbs, fats , prots etc, seems to make the difference. all the best from sunny sussex uk
Good job! It can be hard work, but as you are finding out, it is worth it. Keep up the good work!
pleased there are a fair few british based foods on the database too which is cool, can be hard at times to interpret what is what. spent hours trying to find porridge, of course its oatmeal!! lol
great job! *pats on the back to you*
there are just too many foods in this world - I have trouble finding what I'm looking for too. Today for lunch, had a baked portabello mushroom cap, among other things, and if you look in the database, they have portabella mushroom - raw standardized to a 100 gram serving. I have no idea how many grams mine was, but I doubt it was 100. And it's one of those where you have to agree to 1 serving or 2 servings - you can't change the quantity or anything. Bummer. I think I put half cup of other mushrooms and hoped it was similar enough.
Is is really sunny? Lucky you!

yep, just about to barbecue, before england hammer the swedes in world cup
I tend to just ignore mushrooms since they're so low cal. I love them, though.
Geoff, your story about porrige remindes me of my sis. She was looking EVERYWHERE for castor sugar and couldn't figure out what it was. Eventually, she talked to someone in England and he looked in his pantry for her. Turns out, it's just superfine sugar. Ah, the joys of dialects.

I'm learning how to be creative... I bought some steelhead - it's a freshwater fish... and of course it wasn't in the database. So I found some data from people who raise steelhead, and found out how much fat was in it. Then I went through the fish on CC to find something similar and settled on halibut.
Btw the way GO ENGLAND!

gawd, my bf took me out for dinner and I got the fresh nc mountain trout - omg it was so good. Served with sweet potato 'fries' and grilled asparagus. mmmmm.... that was fabulous.
And to think, I used to hate all fish and wouldn't even try it.

Re: World Cup
I wouldn't quite call that a "hammering", but they did well in avoiding Germany.
now my faves face Sweden while England gets an easy round....ah well!
*so* well done on the weight loss mate. Best from Manchester. I sometimes get the UK food problem too - I log porridge as Tesco Scottish Oats. Glad that aubergine/eggplant and things like that are double listed though!
Why do they call sweet potatoes yams in the US?

Hey nomoreexcuses, you can enter 1.5 serves or 0.7 or whatever decimal value to get the gram value roughly correct.
As for food dialects, I'm an Aussie and I was very pleased to see Vegemite on here! But what we call cannellini beans doesn't seem to exist...I guess they're white beans and it's all roughly the same.:)
Congrats Geoffrey!

I did a bit of research and steelhead have been reclassified - they're closer to salmon than trout. The taste is in between (yummy!)
Congrat's on the weight loss.
believe it or not, sweet potatoes and yams are two different vegetables. =) just to make life difficult.
but a swede is called a rutabaga in the states. tooke me forever to figure that one out since i never ate them here, but swedes were everywhere in England! mmmm mashed swede... mmmm.... and they hardly have any calories if you make them with soymilk and no butter. ;)

My family just calls rutabagas turnips. Which is confusing, and I hate rutabagas (which my dad likes) but kind of like purple topped turnips, which are milder.
Hang on, swedes are turnips?
I read on Wikipedia that yams and sweet potato are two different things, but in the US they're calling sweet potatos "yams" for some weird reason. Just to be awkward probably!
