I notice that some things on the McDonalds menu gets D grades despite having 1,000 calories or so, but yet vodka with only 67 calories or the like gets an "F" and the only reason is that it contains alcohol....there's no nutritional value whatsoever, but it's not exactly BAD for you, it's just empty calories! Like Wonder bread :) I think having 2 shots of alcohol is healthier than downing a big mac with fries...am I wrong? Does alchohol really deserve an F rating?

The nutrition grades are based on nutrients, not calories. Thus why a can of slim fast that has 200 calories and lots of vitamins gets and A and a shot of vodka that has 80 calories and absolutely nothing is an F.
if you look at how many nutrients and stuff you get per calorie, I'm afraid mcDonald's is actually better for you than the liquor
Personally i don't know why anyone would drink period, especially when you're attempting to lose weight. All it is is empty calories, carbs, sugar, and fat in some cases (Mike's Hard Lemonade I know has fat it in). It also tastes like crap. I would give it an F simply for that reason even before you factored in the nutrient info. Just my opinion though.
thejabronisayz, don't tick off the drunken kids of the forum!

Hard liqour gets an F for nutritional value.  Ther'es nothing nutritious in there and that's the onyl reason.  Don't go just by nutritional grades, though.  Some healthy things get low grades.  If I remember correctly, cabbage gets a C.

Other than that, CHEERS!  Vodka with diet soda is always asesome.
alcohol is poison. that would be my explanation.

(sorry, i'm just a crazy tee-totaller but it's true ...)

I literally have cabbage every day and it actually gets an A, just so nobody gets turned off of cabbage!

but i do agree with you about the healthy things with bad grades... like walnuts... they get i think a C+ or C- or something. i know theyre high cal but they are good for you!

a lot of other stuff too.

I hear if you drink vodka it makes it so you cant have babies... thats why it gets an F.

Drat! I don't drink and I've been taking OCs all these years! All I had to do was drink vodka to make my ovaries dry up and blow away! *sigh*
why would anyone drink? why would anyone eat a big mac? what kind of question is that?

not only does liquor have zero nutritional value, but it actually presents problems to your body in metabolizing it, which if you drink enough over a long enough period will lead to liver disease

and I don't know if it's true (it seems true) but I think it kills brain cells too... I am basing this on the people I know who are regular drinkers, so not scientific...

:)

that's all well and good, i don't advocate a life of alcoholism, but i thought the motto of this site was something akin to "everything in moderation." i don't understand why people are so judgmental when it comes to alcohol. personally i think a number one from mcdonald's is a lot worse for me than two gin and tonics on a saturday night. i certainly don't think one is that much worse than the other. besides, alcohol DOES have some health benefits, in moderation.

um, I was just explaining why it gets an F

Some interesting information about alcohol and weight management

I'm not a tee-totaler, but have been avoiding alcohol lately

It's your life... do what you want.

Long term alchoholism can lead to alchohol related dimentia...so yes, it does kill brain cells...not only the weak ones but also the sane ones...

that said, I allow for some alchohol in my diet in the form of light beer or a low cal cocktail...moderation is the key...

If you're drinking for the health benefit, best to stick with wine, preferably red wine...

From American Journal of Epidemiology:

Independently, frequency of wine drinking was associated with lower mortality risk (p < 0.001) largely because of lower coronary disease risk. Similar risk reductions were associated with red wine, white wine, other types of wine, and combinations of wine types. Much of the lower risk associated with light drinking was related to wine drinking. The authors conclude that drinkers of any type of wine have a lower mortality risk than do beer or liquor drinkers, but it remains unclear whether this reduced risk is due to nonalcoholic wine ingredients, drinking pattern, or associated traits.

I can't drink wine. I'm allergic to it.  It makes me sweat profusely. :(

I seriously cut back on the drinking when I started losing weight. For about 6 months I didn't drink at all, and that was the time when I lost the most weight the fastest. Even now that I'm maintaining, I only drink once every two months or so at most.

I've come to the conclusion that for the most part, alcohol is a waste of money that doesn't even provide any me with any enjoyment.

I get a kick out of alcohol.  It's only under the influence that I run around the streets of Toledo at night searching for corn dogs.

People say there's no need for the drink and people say there's no need for sugar.  If you abstain from both, good for you!  I won't invite you over for cookies and spiked egg nog.

And I drink once a month, if that, and my weight loss hasn't stalled at all.  Every person is different.
