Harder workout video
Hey guys,
I've been on calorie count for a while, lost about 75 pounds and have been maintaining at my goal weight for a couple months now. I've been incorporating workout videos into my daily routine for a couple months as well. I work a physical job, and ride horses competitively (galloping and jumping), so get quite a bit of "outside" exersize during the day, but enjoy doing a video in the evening.
I've been doing the Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred for about 60 days now, 2-3 20 min sessions (usually I do Level 2 and 3, sometimes add in level 1 on my day off) pretty much 7 days a week. It's gotten too easy now, I can do all three without breathing hard or really breaking a sweat. I love what it's done for me, but feel like I need to push a little more.
What videos do you guys recommend for cardio/toning that would be more challenging? I ordered a Power 90 set off eBay, but reading here, it sounds like it might not be enough. I spent time on the P90X site, but it seemed like mostly men doing it, so I didn't do that, pretty expensive anyway. I passed their "test" thing on the website (except for the pullup part, don't have a bar for that). I'm not so terribly coordinated, so I don't think I'd do so hot in a "dance" type video like Turbojam, I'd just trip over my own feet and kill myself. ![]()
Thanks for any help you guys can offer!
have you tried Jump rope or Billy blanks amped dvds?
I can't help you out, but I'm also interested in the responses you get. I loved the 30 Day Shred, but it's gotten too easy for me too... don't break a sweat on level 3 anymore. I like Turbo Jam too (gotta mix it up) but I love how the 30 Day Shred is only 20 minutes because sometimes, that's all the time I have. Is there anything else out there like the 30 Day Shred, but harder? I hope so.
Jumping like an actual rope? I think I'd wind up strangling myself with it ;). I always end up smacking myself in the back of the head with resistance bands.
I think I'm going to rejoin Netflix so I can try a couple different ones. I'll shoot for the Billy Blanks Amped: Full Throttle one maybe? Sounds harder... Have you tried that one?
Thanks for the suggestion! That's the first one I'll try.
liskies11: I'll update here once I've gone through it and let you know if it's any harder. :)
I personally thought Billy Banks was wayyy too easy. D: It barely got me sweating when I did it. May be different for you, though. -shrug-
I highly reccomend Chalean Extreme. I've been doing it for a couple of weeks now, and I feel so much stronger. It's intense, but unlike P90x, it doesn't last for a whole freakin' hour, so I'm personally more motivated to do it. I love it though. Chalene Johnson is incredibly motivating and not really annoying. I thought Tony Horton wasn't really motivating enough at times. I wanted to kick him in the groins when we did yoga and he was like "Well, you're not going to like this, and you can come out if you'd like.." guh, not what I wanted to hear. Chalene would be more like "YES! Feel the burn! You can stay there! Only x more seconds!" which is what keeps me going. XD
But yes. I think I put forth a lot more effort in a short amount of time in the Chalean Extreme videos then I do in P90x. Buut, P90x is a pretty sweet investment too. (I'm just biased and think C.E. is better. Hehe.)
Generally speaking, Power 90 can be intense if you put forth the effort. I think they have an "advanced" dude in the bunch when you do the workout to show you how to make it more intense. I didn't do much of Power 90, though. Only a little before I started P90x.
Turbo Jam.. I thought I was uncoordinated, and at first I was really bad at it, but once you do it a couple of times and get used to Chalene's cueing (which isn't the zomg best cueing evarrr) it's actually pretty easy to get through the video following along, not hitting yourself, or bumping into things. :o
Kaybug: Not sure which workout you have but Billy Blanks lastest Taebo Amped 5 dvd is pretty challenging but if it doesnt do anything for you ..woooohoooo good for you.

Yes, jump rope
:
A Great 15 Minute Jump Rope Workout that You Can Customize to Your
Liking
- Stand in front of a clock or timer of some sort
- Jump Rope for 3 minutes to warm up
- Rest for 30 seconds
- Jump rope as quickly as possible for 60 seconds
- Rest for 30 seconds
- Jump Rope as quickly as possible for 60 seconds
- Rest for 30 seconds
- Repeat this alternating pattern for 15-20 minutes
What i do is right after i finish taebo core express, fatburner,or jumpstart carbio I pause the dvd (at the kool down streching) and grap my jump ropes run outside and jump for 1min wait 30 sec...then jump again as long as i can..which is only about 30 secs but i am determine to get to another min. Then i return to the dvd and go into the kool down streching.
Jump rope helps build coordination. Oh and no i havent done the Full Throttle Yet...try it let me know what you think.
P90X is a KILLER! Don't worry, even after 90 days it won't be easy!

Go to Collagevideo.com to look up just about any kind of workout DVD you can imagine! I love that site!
You could add some hand weights to any video you do. They sell them at most supercenters. They kind of velcro around your wrist. I have some from beachbody.com. Even just the little weight it adds (and you can still hold other weights if you want/need for the routine and you can do push-ups and stuff too). Honestly, I have never found a routine I loved like Turbo Jam. I have a friend who is incredibly uncoordinated and after a few trys at each video she loved it. They send you a learn and burn that teaches you how to do the moves and once you feel comfortable with that you can move on, but if you decide that is not an option, I would recommend just the small glove weights at beachbody.com. They make a huge change in the amount of resistance and increase your output by quite a bit.

Wow, thanks guys! That's a ton of suggestions. I'm wishing now I had ordered the p90x system instead of power 90, but too late now ;). I read about p90x and was a little concerned about bulking up too much. Just doing the 30 day shred (and most likely all the lifting I do during the day) has my arms/shoulders and legs really big, to the point where people are asking if I'm training to be a body builder. I don't want to be bulky, just toned, you know? Maybe I'll do the 90 days of power 90 since I've already ordered it, and save up towards p90x. Sounds like a lot of votes in that direction.
I've added several of the suggestions to my Netflix queue, unfortunantly they don't have any Turbo Jam/Chalene videos on there that I can find. I'm not sure I want to sink the money in, because I really am like ridiculously uncoordinated. You'd think, what with the ability to use 12 different cues at the same time on my horses, I'd be coordinated, but alas, I suck. I was constantly hurting myself doing step aerobics, stepping on the edge and flipping the thing into my shins, falling off, or just missing entirely! :)
Droppinlbs: I'm gonna TRY the jumprope thing. At least if I suck I'm only out a few bucks for a rope ;) Thanks so much!
Well, the Tae Bo Full Throttle is only full throttle as in REALLY REALLY FAST, as in little old uncoordinated me spent most of the time flailing around. I got some of the moves in the slow portions by about the end of the demonstrations, then he goes to quadruple time and I'm running and flailing. Guess I'm moving though :)
I'm going to keep at this one, maybe if I can do it right it will do some good, but the way I did it it was 55 minutes non stop moving, jumping, punching, etc and I didn't break a sweat. They seemed really sweaty on the video though, so I think maybe my flailing is just not as intense! 30 Day Shred feels much harder, but that's much slower and I can do the moves correctly.
Even bought a jump rope. Spent 20 minutes about strangling myself with it, but it definately does feel like more of a workout, so I'm going to stick with that! I can do the jump from one foot to the other, but absolutely CANNOT do the both feet and the same time, end up just wrapping myself in the thing. Seems like most people hop a little off the ground and do fine, I jump about 2 feet in the air to clear it and am not back on the ground by the time it comes back around. Will keep at it though ;)
Yes his work out it has alot to do with form and doing it correctly. I will try the Full Throttle in the morning but I am not sure if i will be able to complete.
Jump rope.. its good jump from one foot to the other but in time you will able to jump with both feet at the same time. Try not to jump so high just a little off the ground.
You have to do what works best for you right....cause that is what is what i am doing...
