What was your hardest college class?

Quote  |  Reply

I did not pass chemistry last semester and I am retaking it this summer. I'm really bummed about this.

So what was your toughest college course? How did you pass?

Linear Algebra!  Ugh!  And I'm good at Math!  Luckily I was working with a bunch of mathemeticians who helped me when I needed it!

Thermodynamics - and it sucked.  Failed the first time, barely passed with a D the second.

While at the time I thought I was cursed for getting the same instructor twice, it turns out that knowing what kind of crap he was going to throw out on a test is why I passed the second time.  (Apparently he was known for saying "the test is just like the homework", and then giving tests that look nothing like the homework.)

I very foolishly signed up for an upper division California history class to fill a spot on my schedule.  I was a business major, and HATE history.  However, I had a hole in my schedule and I thought it would be an interesting class to take, being a native Californian and all.

Once I got in the class, I found out that it was the capstone course for history majors, and they ALL avoid it because that particular professor is so hard.

I wasn't at risk of failing, but I WAS at risk for getting a C (I did not get anything below a B my entire college career).  I tried to get the teacher to change my grade option to cr/nc, but he denied my request (he really was a grumpy old bastard).  I ended up getting help from my mom who has her masters in history.  It was the most miserable class I have ever taken, and I'll never forget that mistake.

I agree with the Linear Algebra, and I majored in Math! I'd have to say that and the History of Russia/the Soviet Union. It was all names and dates. It sucked.

Forensic Sciences. I am not sure what I was expecting, but I went in thinking I would do very well as forensics was the topic I was most interested in and did end up in that field...however there's a BIG difference between forensic psychology and forensic science. It's actual science, like with chemistry and DNA and all that crap. As a psych major, I was a little horrified, but did manage to pass with a lot of studying and focus and pretending (to myself) that I was really interested in it. I was SO glad to be done.

Also Behavioural Endocrinology, for basically the same reason. It was very humbling to realize that some topics just don't come naturally to me. It was interesting....but I had to work a lot harder than usual to retain any of the material. Some things just take a lot more effort.

Behavioral Statistics.  Nuff said!!!

Astronomy was really tough.  I signed up thinking that I would like it because I'm interested in space and the planets and stuff BUT I didn't take into account how much MATH there would be.  I am NOT a math person by any stretch of the imagination.  I just had to study a lot.  I ended up with a B I think but the amount of studying I had to do didn't really make it worth it.

I also took a stats course that was more business based and it really kicked my butt.  It relied a lot on Excel and I've just never been that proficient at using the formulas to format stuff in there.  Probably because it's math, haha.  I basically coasted through and accepted a C for my efforts.  I was just glad not to fail!

They had classes???

Financial accounting for me i guess.... not because the subject is hard, just the way the teacher decides to teach it is annoying.

She doesnt teach from the book (and i dont have the book, only some online text thing that has very little info in it). Instead, she makes you take notes on everything and takes stuff from the test from those notes (i dont take notes, i hate notes).

I end up getting someones elses notes before the test though...most the time....

The tests arent "hard"...she just makes it extra long to make sure people are rushed (most everyone is still working when she says time is up....this isnt hard...its just some artificial constraint to make it annoying).

Its the only class that i dont automatically know the answers before looking at the material (which means i actually have to review a day before the test ....) ...

She also gives lots of busy work with wallstreet journal write-ups and homework / little inclass assignments....along with manditory attendance....so i cant even just skip it and go to the tests.

Overall, i get a C from a ton of "nitpick" points from homework and quizes and random other things. I could pull a higher grade if I tried...but really dont care (it wont affect me getting a job or graduating...but i need a passing grade so i get credit for it).

So, yea, guess thats my "hardest" class..... school is such a joke ....o.O

Organic chemistry was horrible! I technically passed with a D, but I have to retake it anyway. The second time isn't so bad now that I know how to stufy and what my weak points are.

Mammalian physiology will probably kill me when I take it next year. Yell It has a lab that lasts 4 hours!!

Electromagnetic Fields and Waves.  My brain still hurts thinking about that class.

How did I pass?  Switched majors to something with less calculus...

Modern German History. I signed up because I thought it'd just be some World War II stuff and I just needed to fill a spot in my schedule. I didn't know that this prof, like Kaffwyn's, was known as being the hardest professor and he'd assign us to read a 400 page book every week and expect us to give a presentation on it and the material wasn't interesting. All of the books were written by some random historians and it was all about the time up to Germany's reunification. I decided not to do the final project and failed the class. When the prof asked me why I didn't do it and gave me a week extension I told him I couldn't be arsed and walked out, taking the F. haha

This is actually a really fun thread to read.

For me, Calculus. II and III... and probably IV when I get to it. I'm actually really into Electromagnetism and I loved my intro to Thermodynamics. It's the Calculus proofs I hate, not the applied Calculus. Ugh. Then again, Differential Equations is kind of meh, too.

Also, don't feel so bad about not passing. It means when you do pass you'll be a total pro :).

Bacterial physiology. It was this unholy amalgam of calculus and organic chemistry. I think I got a D. I have NEVER in my entire LIFE gotten a D, and before that I have gotten one C.

SCHOOL NERD ALERT yes I was in band. I played oboe ok

also I hate this thread for making me remember it.

Financial accounting. I can't stand that subject. I just managed to get a D

Organic Chemistry. I have never tried so hard to understand something and still not get it in my entire life.

Invertebrate Zoology shouldn't have been tough, but the teacher made it absolute HE**. You could have the absolute right answer, but if you didn't include absolutely everything, you failed. No such thing as "part marks" in that class.

Mammalian physiology is FANTASTIC! Especially when you get into body systems like excretion, digestion, muscles, blah blah blah. It's SO cool seeing how these systems are specialized depending on the niche of the organism.

Trigonometry

Tennis (hey either you can get that ball over the net or you cant)

Micro-Economics the professor was doing his doctrine in it and had been working on it for years...he had one steady voice no changes....no excitement....just dull and boring.....
