Why I hate exercise...

Quote  |  Reply
There are two reasons why I hate exercise. The main reason is because of making noise and what my family says or thinks. I can not make lots of noise...I can not make a drastic change (like starting to exercise daily because thats too much of a change, normally I am on the computer/studying or watching tv for most of the day, every day) I wouldn't want them making a big deal out of it, which they would. And I dont want them to say anything negative. Anything, positive or negative, would give me less motivation, that may seem weird, but I like keeping things to myself, especially when it comes to exercise and eating healthier.

The second reason is because of having Asthma...the most I can do is walk or go up and down stairs. Walking in place is okay, and its the quietest kind of exercise I can find. But that's still tricky to do, because I wouldn't want anyone to ask me why or what I was doing if I were just walking in place. Sometimes about twice a month I can deep clean my room which is good exercise and it also disguises the look that it can be exercise!

Anyways, does anyone have any comments, ideas, or anything to help me? Have you ever felt like you were held back from exercising and eating healthier because of friends or family?

I never liked discussing anything about myself with friends or family. If they ever brought up the subject I would quickly brush it off. I did that because I was self conscience about myself and I guess I thought they would make fun of me or something for dieting/workingout. After a while I gave up trying to hide it and after that it was easier trying to go running every day and picking the right foods to eat. Family and friends never said anything negative about me changing my habits, infact they were quite impressed. A few friends did say a couple of things but its like... eh brush it off and continue. Its not as big as it sounds, but I certainly know how you feel. Do you know how your family will react if you told them you wanted to eat healthier and exersize daily?
Do you have a TV and DVD player or VCR in your room?  Have you thought about trying something like yoga?  That might be something you could handle with your asthma, it's a quiet activity, and it does burn calories.  See if you can check out a couple of yoga videos from your local library and give them a try.  Also, you could try lifting light weights.  You can just walk around your room and pump your arms as you hold a weight in each hand.  You can start out really light, like one or two pounds, then work your way up.  You can buy cheap dumbbells at places like KMart, Walmart, Target, etc (I bought a pair of 5-pounders at Kmart for like $4.00 each.)

I do know what you're going through, though.  There's a certain "stigma" associated with being the heavy person who's trying to lose weight.  Until I had seen a significant weight loss, I kept it very private, and never wanted any input, positive or negative.  If that's what you feel that you need in order to succeed, then there's nothing wrong with that.  Good luck - I hope you can find a program that will work for you - quietly!  :)
I don't know exactly what they would say although last week when I told my mom that I wanted a bike, which I can no longer get, she did say "well I think it would be good exercise for you"...and I kind of didn't like that she said that. I've been watching/measuring (or atleast trying to) what I eat for the past 7 months, and I always get these looks, like Im weird or something for doing so. I dont think anyone understands how I would like to lose some weight, they just assume ill turn into some person who just cares about looks...but it really bothers me that someday I could die from being overweight/obese. They think that I shouldn't worry...but I think if they were in my shoes, they would at some point worry too. Plus Im sure my asthma symptoms would decrease a little bit if I lost weight.

I'm on the second floor. I guess I don't like how my family reacts to change, and I wouldn't like them thinking any certain things about me...Sorry its kind of hard to express how I feel about that. I need to get a new inhaler, but I have an emergency inhaler, Proventil.

I am 18 years old, 5'2, around 215 pounds. I really don't have any goals, besides that I'd someday like to be at 150 pounds. (thats still overweight, but 65 pounds lost is a lot)
thank you justlaura :) Yoga is something I have thought about trying someday!
Maybe your mom meant that as a positive thing, and didn't think that you would take it that way?

I live at home with my parents, and my mom is supportive, even gows grocery shopping with me to get fruits and 'health' food. My father is kindof a jerk about it in the way that if he ever sees me eating something not completely helthy, he says 'well there goes the diet'.  I just tell him to leave me alone (though, I don't use such nice terms).  I noticed that my family connects the word 'diet' with never eating anything good ever again, hence why neither of my parents have succeeded very long on one.  Also, once I was getting ice cream, and looking for the scooper so I could measure out 1/2 cup, and my dad said 'if you're going to eat it just eat it' and got all pissy for no reason.

Sure I hate the comments..... but you know what, it motivates me even more that I will be able to show him that I can succeed even with his ignorant comments!  But believe me, it will be easier to not hide it.  Don't let the idea of people commenting on you or your helth plan ruin it for you.  Esoecially when it comes to exercise, you could even just tell them that you are trying to get out and do something for once if you still feel uncomfortable with letting them know you want to loose weight.
Thanks a lot undertherainbow :D Unfortunately there's no room on the first floor thats available, but there is a park nearby.
I've done HIIT workouts in my room. haha. I hid it for a year or so until my parents finally realized what was going on. my mom got all worried and told me I wasn't exercising 'right' and all this crap. still do it though, from time to time.

and about the asthma.. may sound crazy, but running helped out my asthma A LOT. I'm no doctor, but I know my asthma hasn't bothered me AT ALL since I started running regularly. I started out running just 5 minutes a day, and now I'm up to 45!

and I DO feel like refraining from eating healthier from time to time.. I feel like such a nag when I go grocery shopping with my mom and make SURE she gets the fat-free cheese and the LIGHT soy milk, not regular. I feel so fussy, but I haven't let up yet!
Go swimming at the Y.

They'll think you're just doing it recreationally.
rachelynn- I sent you a couple PMs :)

I am not big on letting my family members know that I have started to exercise or am trying to eat in a more healthy way because once I slip up even the slightest they are there to point out my mistakes. I know they do not mean it in a negative way but it does come across that way.

I am also a bit self conscious about having people see me exercise that is one of the reasons that I love to walk. Most just think that I need to work off stream or destress. I do walk in place when at the computer or when watching television. I walk in place in 5 or 10 minute spurts.
