I hate to say this but it is a pet peeve of mine...

For anyone who is wondering...

Loose:not tight; not closely constrained or constricted or constricting. I.E.- I have lost weight and now my jeans are very loose.

Lose: fail to keep or maintain. I.E.- I need to lose a lot of weight before I can wear my size 8 jeans from H.S.

Sorry if this seems excessively bitchy...I know we all make mistakes but it drives me nuts! LOL

No, raerae, I don't think it's excessively bitchy.  I agree with you.  One of my pet peeves is when someone starts a sentence with "So." Such bad grammar.  It also annoys me when someone types "i" instead of "I."    I often wonder what people are being taught in school.  It's not just teenagers, either.  Adults  in their 30s and 40s are just as guilty.  I'm sorry, but bad grammar, misspellings and lack of proper capitalization annoy the heck out of me.  Undecided

I am glad not to be alone!

I have done it now and again, but I have a coworker who does it every single time.  Whenever she has to use the words your, you're, there, they're, their, no, know, two, too, etc.  She will use the wrong one every single time.  And then get defensive and angry when our supervisor corrects her.  I tried to explain that it looks extremely unprofessional and that it makes our department look bad when she sends out memos with so many misspellings.  It's a waste of breath.  (or as she would say, as waist of breadth.)

I'm still chuckling over your last sentence, Kay.  You're absolutely right that it looks unprofessional!!  You don't have to be a college graduate to use good grammar or to spell correctly.  Just no excuse for it.  Another one is people who say don't instead of doesn't.  Where do they learn these things????

Stop your moaning this is the Internet. If you don't like it, GET OFF IT!

Ditto!!

No matter how careful we are, most of us make those types of errors.  Yes, almost all of us do make them assuming that we post very much.  Also, a lot of us before we post either are too lazy to use the "Spell Check," or forget to.

Some people might suggest that when posting in forums like this one, it is not significant that they make a few errors in usage, spelling, mechanics, etc.

And many studies have shown that despite what students are taught in school about proper use of formal language writing conventions, the most dominant influences on students are  their home environment and peers.  It makes little difference how many times a student is taught proper language mechanics if when he/she goes home, siblings and parents follow very few of those conventions, or if their friends butcher the language.

These are some common words I have often noticed misused from time to time (and I misuse some of these occasionally, too):

  • their--they're--there
  • to--too
  • than--then
  • affect--effect
  • lead--led
  • you're--your
  • it's--its

Oh! Oh!  Double negatives!!!   I absolutely abhor double negatives!  Don't have none.....doesn't mean nothing....AAARRRGGG!  My darling husband does this.  And yes, Pilgrimdude, it is a habit he picked up from his parents.  Twenty years of marriage and I cannot break him of it.

I totally agree with you, Pilgrimdude, that everyone (INCLUDING me Laughing) makes the occasional error.  No one is perfect.  I guess I'm talking about the posts and responses that have numerous or repetitive errors.  Don't ask me why it bugs me so much, because I'd be hard pressed to explain it.  Thank you for your polite response.  I'll  take it to heart and TRY to overlook these things.

LOL Sparta, you make a great point. This is the internet, and everyone has the right to say what they want. I was simply expressing an opinion. If you don't like it, don't read it! Laughing

Its just as annoying being corrected all the time to.

These are forums not english class.

Pilgrimdude, I completely agree. I make mistakes all the time. I can't spell words like vacuum (spell check did that for me lol) and I often times say things like "Me and Jen" instead of "Jen and I". I was just whining about a pet peeve is all. I am not trying to insult anyone. I too will try to be more patient :)

I think you meant to say, "It's just as annoying being corrected all the time, too.  These are forums, not English class.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.  Further, you're absolutely right, resOkkw.  If you don't care how you come across, then why should I??  Absolutely none of my business.  However, I have never before corrected anyone's grammar or spelling.  I was merely responding to a post with which I happened to agree.  I'm entitled to my opinion, just as you're entitled to yours, right?  Now you have a terrific week!  Hope it's not as hot where you are as it is in Southern California.

I see nothing wrong at all with your mentioning your pet peeve.  I found it interesting.

LOL Robin. I was going to do that but I didn't have the guts. I have never blatantly corrected someone else's grammar either, except for this "blanket" post. Thanks pilgrim :)

I never have, either, Raerae.  LOL I guess his response just struck me wrong.  HOWEVER, I kind of regret doing it.  I don't usually answer sarcasm with sarcasm.  Just creates animosity, and I HATE confrontations.

Please accept my apology for my response, ResOkkw.  I should have just let it drop.

AHAHAHAHA.  You're my hero!

i hear ya! my english is not perfectr, still learning a lot, but that makes me hate "loosing" for "losing" even more:)

I completely agree with all of you, and I am one of those people that will correct people on their spelling and grammar.

I have to look at what some people write and wonder if it even makes sense to them!

Someone I used to be friends with was a doctor - a doctor, yet whenever he'd text or email me I'd have to read through his messages several times and clarify half of it!  It was ridiculous!

I understand that spelling and grammar aren't a strong point for everyone, but your intelligence could be seriously underrated by those kinds of errors!

Samantha, your entire response says it all for me, especially the last sentence!  Very well put.
