i hate smokers
i went out with some friends last night who are all chain smokers and was forced to breathe in cigarette smoke all night (gross). the thing is, this morning i feel exhausted and keep coughing - i'm really not in shape for my morning workout. could passive smoking have done this to me? 'cause i know it wasn't alcohol since i barely drank anything. how on earth do smokers stay healthy? i guess they don't in the long-term. ugh i hate smokers. they don't care that they're hurting their friends as well as killing themselves. :s

longliv -- I think it probably was the smoke! I live in a no smoking in public places state and my family and I are so enjoying the change! I don't go out to bars very often but some girlfriends and I had a night out recently and we all commented on how much better we felt at the end of the night and the next morning after an evening spent in smoke free bars!
P.S. My mom is a breast cancer survivor who STILL smokes! I know it is an addiction, but I agree, I hate it. :(

Tomorrow marks my 2 year anniversary of quitting - YEA ME!!
I feel for you. I hate myself for what I put my family thru for all those years I'd make them sit in smoking sections and smoke in the house and car and list goes on and on...
I too live in a state (AZ) that recently banned smoking in public places and within 15 ft of an entrance. Most hospitals and health care facilities have banned smoking entirely on their property so all the smokers cross the street.

I only hate smokers when they smoke around me
You should choose different friends!
They have the right to smoke!
And you have the right to not breath it in.
But you do not have the right to make them quit, so you need new friends!
It's like that saturday night episode: "you can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friends noses!"

This smoking / non-smoking thing is kinda annoying, I remeber a comedian on comedy central saying that soon you'll have to leave earth to have a smoke... I've been smoking since I was 16 that's 11 years now but I don't remeber people bitchin' so much about the smoke 5 years ago or earlier. Now it's just trendy to complain about everything, it's like a war among different factions and each faction tries to change the world according to it's own beliefs.
People who don't smoke shouldn't hang out with large groups of heavy smokers in closed, poorly ventilated places.
And speaking of bitchin', I love to walk home from work, on the sidewalk, 2 meters away from the heavy afternoon traffic and the smell of exhaust is making me dizzy especially when the weather is hot and let's not even talk about the noise. Why can't other people move their arses like I do and ditch the damn cars that are killing the people and the planet as a whole?
At work why do they set the air conditioning at 18-20 centigrade? I can't even wear sandals in the summer because I get cold feet and a sore throat soon after. And also people who have the flu and come to work with a running nose cuz they have to make some deadline at all cost to get the bonus, don't they realise they're contagious and making everyone sick? I wonder why there is a flu epidemic every winter...
Point is that it's easier to avoid cigarette smoke than most other health threatening factors and there's no changing people just because you don't like what they like.

If i have to passive smoke all night i end up throwing up cigarette ash when i get home (even when i've not been drinking!) But i'm SO happy it's now illegal to smoke in enclosed public and work spaces here woop woop!!
While I find smoking disgusting and I try to stay away from it whenever I can, I don't use it as a sole basis for judging someone, whether I know them or not. I can't just see a random smoker on the street and claim I hate them.
If you really hate your friends, and they're that inconsiderate, why are they your friends?
And I'm curious as to your use of the term "forced." Did your friends, whom you know to be chain smokers, force you to go out with them? What would their reaction have been if you had politely asked that they reduce their smoking for the night, or go to an outdoor spot where you might have been able to sit upwind?

I have the right to think smokers are disgusting human beings, however. I also have the right to laugh at them as they cry about the smoking bans that are becoming more popular. Other than that, yeah, they can feel free to smoke wherever it's still legal to do so.

Yes spiro,
You do have that right.
Post #8 shows that smokers are much warmer, friendlier, happier, more productive people than non-smokers!

What? People still smoke? How 70'ish.
Just kidding, my wife and I quit 3 months ago.
We are so glad we are no longer addicts.
Got to run, we are off today to see a travel agent to plan a trip to Aruba with the money we save from not smoking!

Smokers are disgusting human beings and we hate them? Wow, aren't we taking this a bit far guys?
I don't smoke, never have but I have friends that do. I ask them not to do it in my immediate vacinity and they comply. They know they are not allowed to do it if they are at my house, if we are at theirs they are nice enough to go on to the porch so I don't have to breathe it in. It's banned in bars/restaurants here so they have to take it outside if they want to do it there...
I just never thought of a nicotine dependency as a reason to hate or judge somebody...
Congrats to those of you who have quit!

Now that it is illegal to smoke in public places in England, going out at night doesn't leave me feeling ill, and smelling like an ashtray.
I don't hate smokers, my mum smokes-and it's her body so she can do what she wants to it, even though it breaks my heart- but when smokers are damaging other peoples health, they should show respect and go outside instead of just bitching about it. "oh we have to go outside in the cold to do something we chose to do, instead of doing it in the warm where we can give innocent people cancer".

i think smoking should be banned everywhere. that said, longliv, nobody "forced" you to do anything. you didn't have to go out with you chainsmoking friends, you didn't have to stay in the bar with them, and to turn around this morning and say you hate them...how about expressing your concern for their health and deciding you're not going to do that anymore?
I think that the tax on cigarettes should just keep being raised more
and more until no one can really afford the damn things. Seriously, who
can really justify paying $12 for a pack? $20? Slowly they will all be
unable to afford the habit!! Muahahaha.
Cig just went up 60 cent a pack here in the last month. My mom smokes. That's another 4.20 acarton . It was a tax for state of TN. It's been ban for acouple years here to smoke on the hospital property and school property and not most of the resturants and was told recently that in another month another restaurant will be all NO smoking. I have going somewhere to eat and have to smell cigs it makes me sick. So glad when it comes to everyone not being able to do it anymore. My mom has COPD from smoking.
if im around friends who dont smoke..i ask them first if its ok and they always say they dont mind. if they did..i wouldnt light up.
in other news, i love buy one get one frees.
also, id like to quit this year heh.

lol dkn, I liked your post. :) I agree, its trendy to complain about smokers right now.
I'm kinda curious though about why they are still your friends longliv......I bet they'll never "force" you to hang out with them again if you let them know you hate them and think they are disgusting humans.
y'know, I have a friend who drives recklessly, all the time. If I ride with him, I feel like that could hurt me. So you know what? If he's driving, I take my own car. I don't climb in, buckle up, then spend the next day whineing about how I was forced to spend time with him and put my safety at risk. If I choose to ride with him, thats my problem, not his.
Jeesh.....whatever happened to personal responsibility?

I know what you mean jeepgirl, I never ride with my sister. She reck her car twice this year. She has some health issue and pain med and I think she shouldn't be driving at all.
I smoked for years, 1start time smoked 20yrs , stopped for 10yrs. started for 1yrs again. than stopped and haven't wanted on since. I just wish know one got hooked in the 1st place.

if you up the taxes on cigarettes, crack and meth will be cheaper. people will start smoking crack or meth. crime rates will increase. the world will be thrown into chaos. sound like a good idea now?
on a serious note. i don't smoke yet i don't care if people smoke in bars. i already drink, eat ramen, and do many other unhealthy things, so what could one night of cigarette smoke every now and then do to me? probably not as much as i already do to myself. restaurants, however, i think they should not allow smoking.
a bar should have the right to make itself a "smokers bar" or "non-smokers bar." the government should not be this far into our personal freedoms.
but anyway, after i've had a few beers, you could smell like my gym clothes and i wouldn't care. for some people, a beer and a cigarette while out with friends is the closest thing they get to a vacation from everyday life. the irony in it all is that the complaint is against the cigarette smoke in bars being unhealthy. nevermind the fact that the 10 shots of jagermeister they took will make them regret going home with someone they normally wouldn't have if they hadn't been drunk, leave them hung over, and probably smelling more like a jager and vomit cocktail. chastize me if you want, but those are my feelings on it.
