Hauntings... Real or Otherwise... (Please Share!)
I've been seeing the trailers for The Haunting In Conneticit. It looks genuinely creepy. I know, I know, it's been totally sensationalized, and "Based On A True Story" should really read, "Based Loosely On True Events Except For The Stuff We Made Up To Make It More Interesting..." But still. It looks delightfully spooky. I'm not sure if it's out, yet, or if anyone's seen it??
(Coincidently, I was reading some posts on IMDB from some people who actually lived in that house/apartment that the story is loosely based on... They all agreed that while they never felt threatened or scared in the place, that (minor) weird shtuff did go on there... Brand new light bulbs blowing our for no reason, doors opening and shutting on their own accord, hearing footsteps above their head when they knew no one else was home... Just lovely "little" things like that.
Just because I am the type of person I am, I would find it REALLY hard to live in a place that was a mortuary or that had murders committed in it... I don't know that I believe in "ghosts" in the traditional sense, but I believe that the weight of history weighs more heavily in certain places. Trapped echo's of things past if you'd like an oversimplification of the thing.
So, anyway, you can't start doing research on house hauntings without running across info on the Ronald DeFeo murders... Which was really fascinating to me. On a couple of levels. I'm not saying the dude's innocent... Any bit of background you can find on the bloke paints him as a disturbed ner-do-well from the get-go, but I still think there's a macabre fascination whenever anything like that happens. Because we'll "never know"... He's the only one left that knows EXACTLY what went on that night. And there's just certain weirdness tied up with the case. The guy being "guilty" doesn't take away from the little oddities. I mean, for starters, why were all SIX of them just lying face down in their beds throughout the ordeal? No sign of struggle, they hadn't been drugged, none of them tried to get away... Why didn't any of the neighbors hear the shots? Small quiet village... Someone must have heard SOMETHING. How did he do it so FAST with a shotgun and having to to move downstairs, upstairs, into multiple bedrooms?
I'm not saying it's one of life's great mysteries, or even deserves much thought, but it is kind of fascinating.
Any of you have any personal "weird" happenings in your life? Any hauntings or other "just-too-weird-to-admit-around-the-water-coo ler-next-day" events?
Share 'em. I'd love to hear.
Ooh. We have ghost in our house. Actually, we think mulitiple. :D
There's a guy who hangs around in our hall, in a dark suit and a hat, you'll see him walk past in the corner of your eye. Thing is, he also likes the bathroom, and you regular get a little 'surprise' as you strip to have a shower. (Classic having a friend of mine over. 'Someone just pinched my arse!?' 'We have a ghost, and of course he did, it's a nice arse!' -- Tickled me anyway)
Uhh, there's a small black cat who will come and ask to be let out i nthe middle of the night, and you assume it's our cat, until you realise that she's already laying on your feet. Completely harmless, oyu just see pawprints and shizzle, which is odd. Annoying to have to mop them up though *grr*
And a girl who's name I think is Lizzie (books kept opening on pages and Lizzie featured on them, or random Channel hops bring up the word) and she's quite a sweetie. Switches on lights or off on occasions, if you say you're bored often enough, books will appear, or the radio switches itself on. She's a bit mischevous though, we were all looking for car keys for a half hour, only to find them very neatly, perfectly squarely on top of my history textbook (which I had lost for a month) which was perfectly squarely in the middle of the living room floor.
It's kinda nice having ghosts, there's always company, and because we're courteous to our ghosts, they're generally pretty courteous in return :D
Too many encounters to remember all at once, some mine, some my grandkids.
We go through lightbulbs around here like free flowing water.
A toy with no batteries that goes off at will.
Doors open and shut.
Grandson use to sleep in my room until he complained that grandma wouldn't let him sleep, it use to be my grandma's room as well.
When I do not go to the cemetery for an occasion, holiday or anniversary of a death, my grandma will smack my head. I was the one who use to bring her all the time to visit the graves.
My granddaughter and I going for a walk and no one else is around. She keeps looking behind me and asking 'grandma, who is your friend' over and over again.
My grandpa comes down the stairs, sits on the sofa and turns on the TV.
The cassette player in my car will insert a cassette and start to play. Played with this one day. I would eject it and the cassette would insert itself and start to play, did this about four times in an hour one day.
I have received hugs when I am alone in the house.
My daughter has a water ghost. Hard to explain, but no matter where she lives the water goes crazy.
I have had to different cats at different times, different houses. Both would either yowl and hiss at 'nothing' or sometimes be petted. My dog would go and hide and hide under the table and bark at 'nothing'.
The one apartment that I lived in, 'he' liked keys. I had a place to hang them up and 'he' would take them. 'He' also use to stand outside of my girls room and watch them sleep.
Ever seen the Sixth Sense? Remember the scene where the cupboard doors open? Happens here all of the time. All the cupboards are closed, leave the room for a couple of minutes and come back, all of the cupboards are open again. These are cupboards that close tightly and I have a hard time opening.
Those are just some of the good experiences, I do not talk about the bad things that have happened.
tehe, they're really impressive, sounds like you attract them.
Have you or your daughter ever thought about trying to refine some PK? Especially the water thing, she/you might have a real gift there it's just not trained enough to be used productively. Does it ever increase when she's/you are feeling an emotion more strongly than usual, like stress or joy or loneliness?
She has moved a lot in the past, has lived in about eight different places in the last nine years. She has been living with me for the last two years. Every place that she has lived in she has moved out of because of water problems.
When she moved in here in two years every pipe has burst in this house. The house has been in the family since 1978 without any plumbing problems. She moves in and the taps start leaking, the pipes burst and I don't even want to talk about what the toilets do. The pipes were all checked out when I bought the house from the estate and the plumber said that everything was in great shape and should last for years.
Not sure about the mood thing. Never thought of it. Although I have a god daughter that sees auras and tells me that my daughter's is very dark. Not black, but full of deep dark colours.
Her mom, my bff is Psychic. You want to hear about strange things talk to her.
I have a friend who sees spirits.
I am an empath. I have to be very careful of who I am around because I pick up their emotions and they become my emotions. It is sort of good in a way because I relate to those that are around me. It becomes a problem when I encounter negative people. I become someone that I don't recongize. It is very disconcerning at times. I spend a lot of time alone because of this.
Hmm ^,^ That's hella fascinating!
An empath? I'll have to look into that :)
Yeah, suggest the mood thing, i might explain it. Some poltergeist activity is attributed to strong mindsets under stress in the house in which it's occuring.
Random knowledge is fun :D
I once shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I'll never know.
My encounter happened the night of my senior prom. A couple of weeks before, my grandmom wasn't feeling too well, but agreed to go shopping with me anyway. We picked out jewelry to go with my dress and my grandmom got her mind set on this cheap little $3 rhinestone bracelet. She would not leave until I bought it. I've never been much of a bracelet person, so I just bought it to make her happy.
Night of the prom, my boyfriend (now my hubby, btw) and I were dancing and I looked down and the bracelet was gone. It must have broken somewhere on the dance floor and my friends and I spent a good hour going over my steps. All for a $3 bracelet. We considered it a lost cause at the end of the night and left.
The next morning, I woke to the news that my grandmom had suffered a heart attack early that morning and passed away in her sleep. I was absolutely distraught. This woman helped raise me. In tears, I called my husband and broke the news, and he told me a strange story that neither of us understand to this day.
He was about to return his tux, checking pockets and such, when he found a small hidden pocket on the inside of the jacket. It was sewn up, but he could tell something was inside. He cut it open and there were both pieces of the broken $3 bracelet. We truly believe that she put it there, letting us know that she's still watching. It really comforted me during that rough time.
The Haunting in Connecticut is based off Discovery channel's "The Haunting". If you havn't seen the episode then you can youtube it. It is indeed very creepy. I found the true story to be quite scary, but when you watch the real story and then watch the trailor for the movie...you will see the movie is definitely fabricated. Thats hollywood! If you enjoy scary movies though it's probably one to go see. I love scary movies, but for some reason I feel this one is going to give me nightmares...and I'll never want to sleep on my house alone again. HAHA.
I have had quite a few experiences in my home, mainly in my bedroom. My mother has also experienced a few things. I don't really like talking about it though.

Spoiled....I think that's fascinating! I've gone through my whole life never experiencing anything like this. None of my friends or family have or do any of these things. I've never to my knowledge, experienced a ghost or a haunting of any sort. And for you to be surrounded by people who can is very interesting to me. It makes me wonder how all of that works. Maybe people with these (for lack of a better word) gifts are drawn to others who do as well?
I've had way too many to mention, I see dead people!
Honest I do and some of them I don't know but I know relations of theirs and have been able verify the facts with them.
I once had a message to give to my then boss from her dead mother (whom I never knew she died way before I knew her daughter) and after I gave all the details to her (she said nothing at all whilst I was saying it) she invited me to her house showed me a photo with about 10 people in it and right away I picked out her mum as the woman i saw she then told me a story as to why she had given me the message for her...
^ Cool! Hope it's a nice thing for you as opposed to some scary 6th Sense thing where the poor boy gets freaked out all the time.
yeah it doesn't bother me at all, it only seems to happen when i am in a certain stage of sleepiness when i guess i am at my most receptive....I like meeting new people ![]()
Sorry, but I am always just amazed when I hear anecdotes like this. I have never experienced anything remotely supernatural (or extraterrestrial). No one I have ever known personally has ever experienced anything like this, except an ex-girlfriend's mom who was a Wiccan (and more than a little "out there"). So I am more than a little skeptical - no, I just can't believe - that "supernatural" events are solid reality. Until the day that someone can verifiably document this stuff, I just have to assume that there are other, more earthly, explanations for such events. But, I do love the movies based on this kind of thing! Just my thoughts.

andie, my bf also "sees" dead people. Or things on other planes. It is pretty creepy. One time he asked one of them to move something so that I could know they were there. They moved a candle holder across the table. I was a believer after that.
It is kind of like he has a blue light above his head or something that lets spirits know that he can sense them and sometimes communicate with them.
He can also control flows of energy which is really weird. I didn't believe him for awhile until he did some really bizaare things.
^^ that's cool shaded I'm not as advanced as your bf but i can alter things with just thoughts.
As soon as I read your post I received an email from a coworker about this movie::::
Demons from the Dark By Chip Coffey We've all seen them: movies like The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist, in which restless, often malevolent spirits terrorize families who have unwittingly chosen to share their living space with the dead. Most of us can't begin to imagine just how traumatic that experience would be. For Carmen Snedeker, the unimaginable became frighteningly real when she and her family moved into what appeared to be, at first glance, a lovely house in Southington , Connecticut .
Carmen's family had been going through some tough times when she happened upon the "for rent" sign outside the house. Her oldest son was undergoing treatment for cancer, the family was in dire straits financially, and they needed an affordable place to live. Carmen felt her prayers had been answered when she discovered that the monthly rent was well within the price range that her family could manage to pay for a decent and comfortable place to call home.
Shortly after moving into the house, Carmen made a shocking discovery. In the basement, partially hidden under building and construction materials, she found tools and equipment that are typically used by morticians. Carmen quickly came to the horrifying realization that she and her family were now residing in a former funeral home!
It didn't take long for darkness to descend upon the family. One day, as Carmen was mopping the kitchen floor, the water suddenly turned blood red and had a putrid odor. Crucifixes that hung in various places throughout the house began to simply disappear.
Carmen's niece was living with the family at the time. One night, while sleeping, she was physically assaulted by unseen hands that groped and grabbed at her body. A rosary that she had placed around her neck was violently yanked by the abusive entity and the beads scattered all across the floor.
Several demonic entities made their evil presence known during the ensuing weeks.
"They were incredibly powerful," Carmen remembers. "One of the demons was very thin, with high cheekbones, long black hair and pitch black eyes. Another had white hair and eyes, wore a pinstriped tuxedo, and his feet were constantly in motion."
Carmen's formerly "preppy" oldest son soon began wearing only dark clothing and suffered dramatic personality changes. He became increasingly angry and violent and he started writing dark, disturbing poetry. One of the poems that he wrote contained graphic descriptions of sexual activity with dead bodies.
The family frequently smelled foul odors in the house, including the scents of rotting flesh and excrement. At one point, a dark mist enveloped Carmen and her niece while they were together in the kitchen, disorienting and paralyzing both of them. Terrified, Carmen began to recite The Lord's Prayer and the demon released the women from its hellish clutches.
Carmen was at her wit's end. Her family was clearly in danger, as the demonic infestation grew worse with each passing day. Desperate for relief, she telephoned renowned paranormal experts, Ed and Lorraine Warren, and begged them for help.
The Warrens , perhaps best known for their involvement in the much-publicized Amityville Horror case, agreed to investigate. Ed , Lorraine and their team of investigators literally moved into the Snedeker's home for an astounding nine weeks in order to witness for themselves all the supernatural events that were allegedly occurring.
John Zaffis, nephew of Ed Warren, was part of the investigative team. John recalls that, shortly after arriving, members of the team began to be "touched" by the entities. He also remembers the vile odors that frequently permeated the house.
"The situation was pretty chaotic by the time we arrived," John recounts. "One night, I was sitting at the dining room table, reviewing some notes that I'd made. Suddenly, the room grew bitterly cold and I could sense a presence around me. I called out to the others, who were sleeping in the living room, but I couldn't get anyone to wake up. I looked up the stairs and saw an apparition starting to form. The air was filled with a disgusting odor, so foul that I could hardly breathe. As the apparition took shape, I could hear a noise that sounded like thousands of flapping wings coming from behind it. I'd never been more terrified in my life!"
A Catholic priest was enlisted to bless the house and even perform the sacred rites of mass therein, but the negative activity continued. Finally, the decision was made to conduct an exorcism on the house. The demonic forces railed against the exorcism, but following the ritual, "the house definitely felt lighter and we all felt a sense of calm and relief," John Zaffis remembers.
The Snedeker family resided in the haunted house for two-and-a-half years before finally moving. To the best of her knowledge, Carmen states, "no one who has lived there since [her family left the premises] has experienced any paranormal activity."
It has been almost two decades since these events took place. Since that time, Carmen has been "approached" by negative forces, but her unwavering faith and unflinching courage have kept the evil energies at bay.
"No one will ever really know why the house was haunted while we were there," Carmen said. "We did discover, however, that one of the men who worked in the funeral home was guilty of necrophilia, so perhaps his heinous actions stirred up the demonic forces."
"This was one of the most significant cases I've ever worked on," John Zaffis says, without hesitation. "It proved to me, beyond any doubt, that demonic forces are very real."
A television documentary, called A Haunting in Connecticut, and a book, entitled In a Dark Place, have both chronicled the events that took place in the old funeral home. In 2006, Gold Circle Films, in collaboration with Integrated Films and Management, will produce a feature film about the demonic haunting. Universal Studios will distribute the film.
In conjunction with the release of the movie, a new book about these incidents, written by Snedeker, Zaffis and paranormal investigator/writer, Chip Coffey, will be published.

I thought like this for a long time. Then I realized that just because we don't have the instruments or the science to explain it at this time doesn't mean that they don't exist.
Things like earth being round used to be hersey (sp?), until it was proved otherwise. Gravtiy always existed and the effects were obviously felt by everyone, but it didn't "exist" until Newton developed the formulas to explain it.
There are so many people who have seen/experienced things first hand that it has to be true. And there is more and more scientific measurements being developed everyday.
There is no other explanation for why that candle holder slid across the table or why later in the same apartment when I was home alone that my keys slid across the floor.
My bf can tell where and when (almost down to the second) where lighting will strike. What is the earthy explanation for that? I have personally witnessed him do it over 100 times, so I know he isn't just lucky.
Great stories, all! Keep 'em coming! Even the creepy stuff appeals to me.
Flonklar, I actually have to agree with Shaded on this one. And I'm pretty skeptical about most things. What's sad to me about the "supernatural"/"paranormal" whatever you want to call it is there is SO many hoaxy/deceitful people out there that have given the whole thing such a bad reputation. But there have been unexplained things going on since the dawn of time and it would be silly (to me) to think that there's NOTHING to ANY of the stories, etc. you hear.
Not only that, but things of this nature happen frequently enough... Maybe not a frequently as *some* people claim, but frequently enough that in my mind not all 100% of everybody who's ever had "unexplainable" phenomena happen to or around them can be schizophrenic, delusional, drug-users, or liars.
I also can't help thinking that *some* of us as we get older lose so many of the gifts that we have as children. I think maybe that's why kids (in general) are a little creepy to most of us. I think that children (and certain adults) are more in tune to certain planes and ways of being... Even that certain people have certain "magics" or gifts (If you'll forgive the non-scientific term) that not everyone is privy to. Heck, I'm not of a specific religion, but just the reoccurring themes and stories through all cultures of the world that are echoed through religions and mythologies add a bit of validity (to me) that there MUST be SOMETHING to these types of happenings.
My 2 cents. I'm not trying to make a believer out of anyone, but it's such a broad spectrum that it's hard for me to stand by and say it's all fabricated or impossible or whatever. The older I get, the more I start to think that there's no such thing as "Impossible."
You could use the same argument to argue the existence of God.
Great stories, everyone! I am looking forward to doing a little research on the true story behind the movie.
Ever since we had to put our beloved Jack Russell Terrier down due to cancer (yes, we first did all we could for her: chemo, surgeries, etc and she fought it valiantly but the cancer was very aggressive and I think she simply grew tired of the fight) she has been 'haunting' our house. Haunting has an implication of fear/scariness, so maybe that isn't the right word. Let's just say her spirit came home with us and chose to stay.
I would hear the sounds of her shaking her head, flapping her ears as dogs do, and various times feel like there was a dog sitting by my feet when of course there was none present in an earthly state. But the most unforgettable was one evening my husband and I were watching TV in the living room. The dog often chose to lay at the one end of the couch on a pillow. We heard the very distinct sound of a dog jumping off the couch and trotting out to the kitchen. Not only was is auditory, but we also heard/saw/felt the floor move as it would when she would trot across. We looked at each other as if to say, 'Did you just hear/feel that?' with the same look, so we knew we both experienced it. It is comforting to still have her around, just as long as she is here because she wants to be and isn't 'trapped'.
