Just wondering if anyone else suffers from headaches after a long run?  I've done two 10KM races this past month and both times I came home with a headache.  I drink a lot of water so I don't think I'm dehydrated.  I have to really work at consciously keeping my shoulders down so my neck doesn't tense up, but maybe I'm letting them hunch up unknowingly.  Any thoughts anyone?

I have the same problem with headaches after a long run, mainly in the summer though. I think you are right it has to do with the tightening of the shoulder/neck muscles. I try to loosen up during the run...relax, relax, relax...

Unfortunately I have no remedy for it, other than I take a few pain killers after the run if the headache gets to be too unmanageable. Maybe a massage would help to decrease the tension.

Hey there... I've had the same problem... what I discovered was that I was overhydrated... I had drank too much water leading up to the run and then drowned myself in water afterwards thinking I was dehydrated... now, when I finish my run I drink a juice or a Gatorade G2 (half the calories) drink in addition to my water... I need the carbs and/or soduim to get everything balanced back out... maybe that's what's going on???

Reba, it's funny that you should mention that because last night after my race, my head was killing me and my upper back was really sore.  I took some motrin which seemed to help but lately I've been trying to exercise my core and back more at the gym to see if that will help improve my running form so that I don't finish longer runs in pain.

Thanks girls!  I now at least know I'm not the only one suffering from headaches!  I will try the gatorade thing,  and the "relax, relax" pep talk during my run,  and I always keep working on my core,  since it's so important!  Thanks for all the tips!  Talk to you all soon!
