Healthier Pancakes?

Quote  |  Reply

I usually use the Aunt Jemima pancake mixes to make pancakes. But I was

wondering, are there ways to make the pancakes healthier with the pancake

mixes? Because I dont' have the ingredients to make it from scratch. Like

perhaps adding all-bran flakes/oatmeal to the mix?

When I make pancakes I substitute some things to lower the calories, it doesn't necessarily make it "healthier" though. I use egg beaters instead of eggs, and unsweetened almond breeze instead of milk. If it calls for oil I use pumpkin.

you can add blueberries or any other fruit, that would be good.

i make pancakes from mix a lot too. we have two kids of pancake mix in our house - krusteez and a buckwheat pancake mix. i really can't eat the buckwheat stuff alone (it tastes very blah to me) but i take whatver amount the mix calls for and put in half buckwheat mix and half krusteez. it makes it more edible. and a little better for me.
how about using whole wheat flour mixes instead? It creates a hearter pancake. Here's a good recipe-- http://www.fitsugar.com/231544

Also top it with more nutritious toppings? I love sliced apples or banana with cinnamon and a few walnut pieces! Also blueberries are great topper with almond slivers.

Being a college student I cannot make pancakes, but I recently found nutrigrain's microwavable wheat pancakes. They are so good and dense... I love them!

I've been using Bob's Red Mill buckwheat pancake mix with soy milk and Egglands Best eggs, toss in some fresh blueberries, bananas or fruit of choice play around with some flavored extracts and you got something wicked good for chow.

I TOSS IN FLAX SEED TO ADD SOME FIBER TO FILL ME UP AND KEEP ME FULL AND USE LITE SYRUP - I LOVE BISQUICK AND ITS THE ONLY PANCAKE MIX I USE- LOL

Add ground flax or ground hemp seed into your pancake mix & add a dash or 2 of cinnamon - also - if you can, make your OWN batter so you can be sure there is not as much sugar as Aunt J's and any other store bought brand & you can make them WHOLE GRAIN

This morning I ate some pretty unhealthy pancakes, with real maple syrup, at a maple festival in Michigan. It was for a good cause. I counted the calories. There were a lot.

That aside, you can mix wheat bran with pancake mix and the cakes come out OK. I use 1/3 cup Bobs Red Mill wheat bran to 2/3 cup Bisquik powder. It cuts the calories a lot. I'd guess adding all bran or oatmeal would do about the same thing. Try it and see!

If you really want to improve your pancakes, try adding buttermilk liquid or powder, or some pumpkin.

I found a mix called Kodiak Cakes from a company called Baker Mills. www.kodiakcakes.com

It's lower in calories, sugar and fat than Krusteez, 100% whole grain and has more fiber. I don't eat pancakes often, but these were good.

compared to all the other suggestions, this might sound boring and obvious, but I get the whole wheat aunt jemima mix, mash up a single black banana, crush up some walnuts and combine it with the mix. add some mrs. buttersworth sugar-free syrup, and i'm flush with ecstasy.

healthier? a little more. delicious? oh yeah.

Do you omit the other ingredients?  I love AJ's whole wheat mix and usually try to lower calories some by using lowfat or skim milk.  Still taste great.  But not using the egg and oil at all would be great, too.  I was going to try substituting the oil with apple sauce, but the banana sounds better.

I make my own pancakes completely from scratch and they are very healthy! and really good. I call them Protein pancakes

1/2 cup 1% fat cottage cheese (small curd)

1/4 cup oatmeal (not instant)

3 egg whites

cinnamon

Mix it all up in a blender and pour into a frying pan

this makes about 4 saucer sized pancakes for a total of 230 calories,  3g fat, 25g carbs (from the oatmeal, which are good carbs) and 27 g protein!  Add 1/4c of sugar free syrup for an extra 30 cals, or eat them plain as a handy snack!

You can also add a scoop of protein powder if you want more protein
