Healthiest Breakfast Cereal?

Quote  |  Reply
I find the low-calorie ones (such as Special K) tend to be pretty high in sugar/starch, and the whole-grain, high-fibre/protein ones tend to be very high calorie....

any suggestions of a cereal with a balance of the two?

Just whatever you do, DO NOT try Fiber One.  That stuff is TERRIBLE!  Its like munching on cardboard.  Kashi is really yummy cereal and isn't processed as much as some.  Plus it has a lot of fiber and little sugar.

Nooo, I loveeee Fiber One!!! Its low calorie, high fibre, whole grain, but not high protein.

But than I love all cereals :P

I like Fiber One more than Kashi Go Lean. But if your looking for higher protein, Kashi is probably your better bet, it does have higher calories though.

Usually I figure, I'm adding a cup of milk already, so it somewhat compensates for the lack of protein in Fiber One
Um, what about plain Cheerios? Only 100 calories per oz, 3 grams of fibre, and 1 small gram of sugar. It's also a really versatile breakfast because you can add fruit, cinnamon, nuts, yogurt, or applesauce to spice it up however you like.

I eat Fiber One almost every morning. The raisin one tastes like cardboard, but i found that the caramel one is delicious!!

...and it has 35% of your daily fiber in one serving  :)

All Bran (kellogs) has the fewest calories per 100g than ANY OTHER CEREAL I HAVE EVER FOUND! im serious, i've looked, but this stuff rocks, and it's bulky. 280cals/100g - awesome :D
Kellogg's All Bran Buds are good in yogurt and have half of your daily recommended fibre. But since I assume you want a bowl of cereal, I would recommend All Bran Guardian, Kashi Go Lean Crunch or Nature's Path pumpkin flax. My faves :)
All Bran Guardian [may be called just Guardian] = <3

One of my favorites is Life cereal.

I have 3/4c of cereal and then add in some berries and or other fruit and milk.

It is yummy and fills my tummy until snack itme.

Fiber One is loaded with fiber, which is good for helping with cholesterol problems.  I love it too!
the best breakfast cereal is porridge.. oatmeal, cracked wheat, rye, barley, etc.....

But if you must eat a cold cereal why dont you try muesli or fresh bircher muesli. tastes like cold oatmeal, and its great with fruit.

But i assume you are looking for a american cold cereal, etc.

I reccomend Ezekiel Cereal, its just about the densest and best cereal you can eat, no flour, sprouted grains and very healthy. Found at health food stores and IGAS.

Not that much of a hippie like me? Try Uncle Sam cereal or plain shredded wheat, i also Recommend Nature's path cereals, such as flaxplus or optimum slim.

But be aware that breakfast cerals are tortured grains, they are then processed and loaded with sugar and made indigestible.

Uncle Sam Cereal is basically toasted Rolled Wheat flakes and whole flaxseeds, with a touch of barley malt, and less than a gram of sugar.

I like several ....

Puffed Kamut ... 2 cups for 100 calories

Kashi Go Lean ... 1 cup for 140 calories

Fiber One ... 1 cup for 120 calories

=^..^= MOLLY

also:  Kashi Mighty Bites...the cinnamon kind is 120 calories per cup, honey crunch is 110 calories per cup
I love 1/2 cup Fiber One with 1/2 cup Dole frozen wild blueberries and 1/2 cup skim milk. It fills me up with very few calories (135) and it tastes very good. And the only grams of sugar are from the blueberries.
I prefer the following which I found to be really good and healthy for you which are also low on calories.

Fiber One

Kashi Go Lean

Special K

Curves cereal [Honey Crunch]

I prefer porridge / oatmeal, it's tasty, filling, and dirt cheap if you buy plain old oats :)

For prepared cereal, I like Kashi GoLean (not the Crunch)  or Alpen which is a kind of granola.  Alpen is very dense, though, so a serving looks tiny.

I'm a physician and I highly recommend any version of Fiber One cereal to my patients.  There is no cereal that even comes close to matching its fiber per serving and with the recommended 25-30gm per day...that's a lot.  There are plenty of other good cereals but most are lower in fiber and higher in calories.

Original Fiber One is a little rough for some but the Honey Clusters is great.

I personally LOVE Kashi Heart to Heart cereal.

High in fiber, low in calories, and in one bowl it has the antioxidants of a pound of grapes. (So the box says)

Plus it's really good!
It's a matter of personal preference - I HATE Kashi (it tasted like eating the darned box to me!) but I love Fiber One, especially the Honey Crunch flavour. The Caramel Crunch one makes a great treat too...
Kashi GoLean or Special K Protein Plus

Nature's  Path, Kashi and Fiber One are great as well as Post's Grape Nuts which has no sugar. I use Grape Nut with yogurt and it tastes great. Because it is condensed you don't have to use as much either.
