healthy binger??

Quote  |  Reply

ok this is gonna sound weird

but i have a tendency to binge on healthy stuff

i mean if i had ice cream and cookies in the house i would probably have that but since i dont what sometimes happens is i binge on things like fruit... i love fruit

mangos, berries, apples watermelon and grapefruit are among my favorites

but when i am hungry and decide to have a piece  of fruit for a snack i end up eating like 5

i know that that that isnt really a binge and its better to have like 500 cals of apple rather then cake, but it still bothers me that i dont have enough self control

i have tried drinking a bunch of water but i really dont know what else to do

does anyone else have the same kind of problem or know how to fix it?

I used to do that. :)

Try eating vegetables with the fruit.  Fruit causes spikes in blood sugar that can quickly result in cravings for more, but vegetables stabalize blood sugars to hold off these cravings.  Or, eat some lean protein with the fruit, at least something with the fruit, because fruit alone does not satisfy.

thanks, ill try it with veggies
just so you know you aren't the only one, i have the EXACT same problem as you...i figure at least it's better than eating the same amount of junk. i don't know what to do to fix the problem either...so i would appreciate some advice too! anyone??
I do this all the time as well, but with pickles and tomatoes - still, I'd love to stop.
I binge on the healthy stuff too!  Fruits, veggies, nonfat yogurt...I figure it's better than a bag of M&M's.  If anyone figures out WHY we have this problem, please share with the rest of us!!
Yeah I have a binge problem too, but I'ver lost the control you have now.  It started with only healthy stuff but now I occasionally consume disgusting overprocessed junk.  I'm disterbed too...Why don't I have control? However I have found that it helps if I can make a concious decision to only eat a certain amount of something before I take the fist bite of it.  Its hard but I'm trying to overcome this...I hate it

Me too. Today I had a whole 500g tub of fat-free yogurt...which still came to 300 cals because I ate so much of it. I hope its not bad for me, I do it quite often...

I definitely understand where you all are coming from. I'm a very healthy eater and I do not have any junk food in my home. However, that definitely does not prevent me from getting those cravings. I have binged on healthy food before, but honestly, it's not that great to do. If you're binging that most likely means that you're going over your calorie limit for the day, even if it's on healthy food. The point is, you're probably consuming more than you're expending, which certainly leads to weight gain.

This also isn't a healthy habit, so I would try to break it. The only advice I can give is allow yourself once a week or once every two weeks to eat what you want. This will keep you sane and most likely will curb those binging sessions. I've done it and I can easily stick to my healthy eating without binging because I don't deprive myself.

Think about it, if you do have one of your binge moments and don't have any healthy food around, you will go grab that donut or burger. Start getting into the good habits now :)

i used to do that too.  the biggest health binger.  i binged on grapes, broccoli, any vegetables, i had to finish it until it's gone.  and then i would beat myself over that.

recently, though, my binge worsen to junk foods and i'm gain some nasty pounds.  taking it a meal at a time and make sure i do not binge.   but i totally understand all of you guys.
If you pig out (meaning having 3 apples instead of the one you intended) on fruit once in a blue moon or if you can spare the calories, it's alright.

But if you are truly 'binging' (stuffing your face robotically, physically not able to stop) then you have a problem. Whether you are binging on Ben and Jerry's or celery, the calories are different, but the behavior is still the same and it is unhealthy. Try to find new ways to expel or express your emotions, like exercise, playing a musical instrument, painting, taking a bath, calling friends or family, etc.

one thing that i find helps binging is take cucumbers or carrots and get he most sour mustard you can FIND and eat a smallc up of it with extra mustard

that makes my tastebuds want to stop eating if oyu overdo the mustard ;)

I am the QUEEN of healthy binging let me tell you! I binge on bell peppers, tomato paste, ground bison, elk, ostrich, GF beef, salmon, sardines, olives, green beans, spinach, cherry tomatoes, roasted veggies of all types & sashimi!!! HA HA!!!

I do not really see the harm in eating a lot of fruits & veggies - they are really healthy for you, with tons of vitamins, minerals & anti-oxidants & they keep you REGULAR!! :)

i'm not hte queen but i LOVE healthy binging ;)

as in, im not hungry, but some one's cutting up a watermelon

or my moms making a smoothie and there's a big bowl of mixed berries out..

or my grandparents bring over home grown bananas and mangoes...

yeah you get it

I have the exact same problem, and I think the first response got it right. Fruit itself is not too satisfying. It takes up a lot of volume, but it spikes your blood sugar and doesn't fill you up long. I try to eat some protein with it, usually some PB2 (lower calorie peanut butter). Or vegetables with lots of protein, like broccoli, could help.

Another possibility might be that you're like me, and you label foods unhealthy or healthy. I've binged a lot before on hummus, peanut butter, and dark chocolate even thought they are very high in calories, because they fall under "healthy" to me. It's hard to stop myself. Same with fruits and veggies. I feel like I can binge with much less guilt, so I can go ahead and binge as much as I want, which is silly, because it really messes up my portion control, and I'm still taking in more calories than I need, even if it is from "healthy" food.

This is the same problem I have.  I have been doing it for a while but brushed it off because I didn't think it was that big of a deal -- I mean COME ON!  It's HEALTHY food!!! It can't be bad =P

I thought that until I started binging on more and more food.. and I realized just how bad it is when I also began gaining weight from it.

I have started posting on the bingers support groups because, while I'm not binging on unhealthful foods, it is a binge.  The emotions and carelessness are definitely there and I seriously can't stop myself (at least it feels like it).  By typing out my past food issues, I was able to see what was causing my binges and that kind of helped.  Also, the support on the other threads are amazing =)  You gotta love your fellow CCers!

But yes, aside from the obvious triggers (certain foods, etc.) I have found that if I eat until I'm full AT ALL during the day, then a binge follows.  I honestly hate the extremely full feeling but it seems like once I have it, I'm afraid to get the hungry feeling.  I know it sounds odd but it's true!

There are a few things I have found that help me:
1.  One night before bed, and after a terrible binge, I wrote on my hand 'START TODAY!' so that I would see it the next day and remember how I felt when I wrote it, so I start stopping the binges (haha)
2.  Eating a good balanced breakfast actually helped too, believe it or not.  I read a study that said people who ate eggs for breakfast were generally less hungry than those who didn't..and for me it is true.  My anti-binge breakfast is: 1/3 c oatmeal with 1 egg, 2 egg whites, and garlic stirred in (made with LOTS of water so it's very much like an egg drop soup), 1/2 c nonfat plain yogurt with 1/4 c blueberries, 1/2 cucumber.  I looked back through my food logs and found the days I ate that I never binged...ODD! haha
3.  I keep something in my path to the kitchen that I can stop for on my way.  I bought a 1000 piece puzzle and have it set on a table I have to pass to get to the kitchen.  If I'm heading to get food that I shouldn't, I tell myself I have to fit 20 pieces together before I can get it.  If I'm hungry or it's meal time obviously I don't do this, but it's a good binge-preventer!  Find something that occupies your mind!!  Often times I find that just keep working on the puzzle (they're something I enjoy!)  It's even better if I have water with me to drink while I work.
4.  The final thing that has really helped me is keeping a bottle of water front and center in the fridge.  I always have one with me, but keeping one there really helps.  When I open the fridge to grab more food I make myself grab the water instead.  Mineral water (the bubbly stuff) works well for me too, just because the carbonation makes it filling AND I'm not too fond of the taste when I have a bunch.  I can have little sips at a time but other than that it just tastes NASTY and it kills my appetite!

Sorry this is super long but...I figured if these work for me they MAY help you too!!!

Also make sure you eat enough regularly!
Good luck and let us know how you're doing!

EDIT: One more thing...I find hot drinks very satisfying so I got a cup heater and make sure to have a full cup of tea on it at all times!  If I'm about to binge I grab my green tea off the heater and sip it.  I found when I didn't have it heated already, I would eat and eat and eat while it heated up in the microwave so it really didn't help...thankfully I found a little gadget that you plug in and set your mug on and it keeps it warm =)
