Hi All, I'm finding it difficult to reach 1200 cals a day. I get close most days, but some days (like today) it's really difficult. I'm just not hungry by evening time, and I heard that I shouldn't eat after 8 pm anyway. So do you have some ideas of healthy, preferably low carb, choices to boost up calories? I don't want to just eat a scoop of peanut butter or drink some pop (I read a post with those 2 suggestions here). I'm on a low carb diet and cutting out sugars. I jog for about 40 minutes a day. Any help would be great. Thanks,
One of the features of low-carb diets is that too much protein and fat acts as an appetite suppressant. 1200 cals is probably far too little for someone overweight (guessing) and who is jogging 40 minutes a day (you're 'lightly - moderately' active) If you undereat (crash diet) for long enough your weight-loss will come to a crunching halt. And if you have a very imbalanced diet you're at risk of malnutrition problems. Also, you're going to blow up like a life-jacket with the toggle pulled the minute you eat anything like a normal amount of food again.
You can increase your calories healthily by consuming more fats.... oily fish, meat, eggs, full-fat dairy products, olive oil, avocado, nuts. However, you should really consider reintroducing the better carbohydrates back into your diet... vegetables, fresh fruit, dried fruit, wholegrain foods, pulses (legumes). They're essential for good health because they not only contain the fibre your digestion needs to function properly but also important vitamins and minerals.
Eating after 8pm or not is entirely up to you. It won't make a scrap of difference to the outcome. But do calculate a more appropriate calorie intake and then plan your day out better so that you get the full amount.
Nuts and cheese. Yum!
A glass of full-fat warm milk before bedtime would be a good way to start. :) But I`m guessing with that level of activity you`d need even more than 1200/day - that is, if you plan on keeping the weight off and not ballooning back up after you reach your goal.
Great ways to top up your calorie-intake;
* Cottage cheese
* Nuts and seeds
* Brown bread
* Fruit (banana & grapes have more calories than other fruit)
* Yoghurt
* Raw veggies
* Dried fruit (figs are really good for digestion and they are delicious!)
All healthy choices which are light to digest and taste really good!
Good luck!
