Healthy energy/protein bars?
Hi all,
So i was wondering if anyone had some good suggestions on healthy energy bars. I have volleyball practice everyday and after i always have a luna bar to re-energize and lay me over until dinner. What's your energy/protein bar of choice? Basically i'm looking for one that's low in sugar and fat, high in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals and all for the least amount of calories.
I enjoy both Larabars and Clif bars (more so Larabar). You may want to look into them, but be aware that both are rather high in calories (especially the fat content in the Larabar, but it comes from healthy fat sources like the nuts used in it).
I am not a bar person but when I used to live near a Trader Joes they had the mentioned ones plus some real unique ones as well. Could you also try things like pb on crackers,yogurt/fruit,etc? These are quick to eat and you can make sure to have a balance of carbs/protein/fat to keep energy up
Other posters here clued me in to Larabars, and I LOVE them. Not as sweet as Luna bars. I eat half as a pre-workout snack and the other half after. They're ~200 calories per bar, and kind of high in suger (the one I have packed today is 19g) but it's all natural from the fruits it's made of. And I find them very filling and satisfying.
The peanut butter cookie flavor is like tasting heaven!
Energy is calories.
An energy bar by definition is a lot of calories packed into a small space. Some have more nutrients packed in than others like Larabars but you might be better off eating a handful of nuts as a snack.
i am also a big larabar fan! they are so delcious and made of wholesome ingredients, all raw and all vegan!
yum!
How about couple of bananas and/or apple?
UD
I like the Luna bars as they don't have any poisonous artificial sweeteners in them and they're pretty nutritious and wholesome.
Healthiest Protein Bars in my mind: Grilled Turkey & Chicken Breast - Canned Salmon, Mackerel, Tuna, Sardines, Chicken Breast, Shrimp, Oysters, Clams & Crab - Hard Boiled Eggs & Egg Whites & Free-ranged red meat burgers... They may not seem "package" & "easy" but I always bring these types of food with me when I am on the go with out any problems - I simply bring a plastic fork & napkin with me... and I'm good to go!

I JUST tried the Peanut Butter Cookie flavour 2 days ago and those were my exact thoughts! It really is like tasting heaven, LOL. The first bite reminded me a little bit of a Reese's cup or something. The bar just crumbled and definately had that peanut flavour. Definately my favourite Larabar, right behind Banana Cookie.
you guys should try the new larabar peanut butter and jelly yumm.. also like think thin bars if i really cant get a meal and am on the go although sometimes the sugar alcohols bother me.. kind bars are good too..

Yesterday I tried the new (to my grocery store) chocolate mint flavor Larabar. Unreal. Like eating a big, rich, fatty, delish brownie. New fav. I have a chocolate/orange flavor to try next week!
I just want to give a nobel prize to whomever is responsible for such cooking magic. Who knew that dates are the secret to everything??
I'm not a Larabar or Odwalla bar fan, personally, but I love the Pure Protein bars, especially in s'more. Delicious, filling, and nutritious.
Wal-mart and a few pharmacy stores sell a brand called 'Slim Down' that makes a higher protein bar... The taste isn't too bad and it is filling for the 150 calories... just don't go expecting a big treat like a Larabar. :'D
I just found Muscle Milk Light bars @ my local grocery store. It had 15 grams of protein and less then 10 grams of sugar and 170 calories. I had the Chocolate Peanut Caramel one and it pretty much tasted like a candy bar.
Kashi Crunch (caramel) bars are my favorite. They're around 140 cals, but they're filling for a really long time & definitely taste like a candy bar. My savior for when my sugarbutton is out of hand ;)
