Healthy Grilled Cheese?
Is there any way to make a grilled cheese healthier?
I like mine with tomato.
I am just craving tomato soup and a grilled cheese for dinner, and while Ill have the tomato soup, I like to keep my nutrition grade at an A- at the very least and while all the grilled cheeses they have are commerically prepared theyre still at Cs at the highest and mostly Ds
I was wondering if anyone had ideas/suggestions for a healthier/lower cal grilled cheese sandwich
other than lowcal ww bread and reduced fat cheese
i just make half a sandwich.
I admit that all I do is make sure I'm not using more than a tablespoon of butter to fry the bread. And pretty much have just the sandwich for dinner, unless I've saved some exercise earned calories to have something else small. :) (I also make mine with 100% whole wheat bread.)
Use a toaster oven and use Rye bread with that low fat mexican blend (I only say that cheese because I purcahsed some the other day because it had less fat than the others that I looked at) and do not use any butter. I love it with onions. if you do it right you can get it right around 200 calories. All the cheeses seem to have a low grade so keeping your grade at A- might not work. but you could throw in two cups of Green beans to artificilly raise your grade to keep it at an A-.
Who cares about the grade anyway? I've noticed a lot of CC's grades for food are way off...
Try making it with whole grain wheat if you want the classic taste. Two slices are only 140 calories. Add one slice of the light Kraft cheese(50 calories about) and tomato. Spray your pan with the 0 calorie Pam spray and watch carefully while it cooks. Then, make your own tomato soup, not the canned stuff. Puree 1 large tomato, one celery stick, 1/2 a carrot and 1/4 cup of onion. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add 1 cup of this mixture to 1/2 cup of nearly boiling skim milk. That's it, healthy grilled cheese and tomato soup!
The fat free sharp cheddar slices by kraft or borden are not bad.
I put the sandwich directly on my foreman grill and load it up with lots of veggies. Sometimes I'll put a cooked egg white and turkey bacon in the sandwich when I've got the calories to spare.
2 slices of 100% whole wheat bread + low fat ricotta cheese + slices of tomato = grill in a pan + press down firmly with spatula + flip over and repeat.
