Healthy Halloween Snacks and Party Foods!

Quote  |  Reply

I like Halloween. I enjoy the aspect of dressing up, as well as the original ideas behind it (Samhain). I also enjoy that we usually go and spend the day or a day near it at a theme park into the late hours. >__>

But mostly, I enjoy making foods to give out at the door that aren't your usual Mars Bars mini and Magic Stars. Chocolate is okay in small amounts but most people hand that out, and I like to offer something good while not... uh, dropping an apple in someone's bag. Something tasty and fun. So I was thinking, hey. What treats, snacks and foods do you like to make on Halloween?

For me:

Witches Fingers

You can probably switch the flour for wholewheat, the cheese for half-fat, the butter for... whatever you sub for butter... up to you. I sometimes make nails with different colours of bell pepper.

Orange Jack-o-Lanterns
Get an orange, scoop it out and mix the orange pulp (remove the seeds and some of the pith first!) with some yoghurt. Vanilla works well with orange. Add some gummy worms to each (or raisins if you prefer). While still hollow, carve faces in your oranges as you would a pumpkin or draw them on with a thick black pen. You can freeze these too, and they're better as party food than something to give out on the door.

Bloody (Hot) Popcorn
Air pop popcorn kernels and dust with cayenne pepper and other spices. Optional: take a red food colouring (unless someone can name me something that works well as a substitute!) and splatter it on the popcorn. As a serving suggestion, if you want to give this out to kids on the door portion it into plain paper bags splattered similarly with red paint on the outside. Saves mess and looks cool!

Pumpkin Seeds
Speak for themselves!

Webmd also has some good suggestions: http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/guide/ghoul ishly-healthy-halloween-snacks

Share your recipes! Snacks, on-the-door alternatives, punches and so on. Whee!
