I have a serious pizza addiction. I looove the pizza, but eating it several times a week makes me gain weight and lose money! Does anyone have any homemade healthy pizza ideas? I've had Kashi's pizzas and they're pretty good, but very expensive and not quite good enough. I'm thinking whole-wheat crust, veggies, low-fat mozz?
Any good whole-wheat crust recipes?
Josephs Lavash Breads...they are low carb and yummy and dont smell funny like those other low carb breads. You can get them in 14 inch long pieces too. They come 4 in a pack and each one is 100calories total! It's high in fiber and protein too. My BF loves when we have make your own pizza days. We shred some low fat cheese and amke our own sauce, and add some turkey pepperoni or leftover grilled chicken and pop it in the broiler for a few minutes, then top it off with some italian seasoning while still hot. It's yummy...especially if you like then crust style. I also like to make sicilian pizza by making my own dough once every blue moon....the Lavash style pizza comes out to under 300calories, depending on your toppings of course, but it's a great alternative!
Ps. look in Walmart by the Deli section for the Josephs Lavash Flatbreads..the pitas are also yummy and fluffy...i make tuna sandwiches with them!
If it is just for try different breads for the crust. Pita, wraps, tortillas and make a personal size pizza. This should help with portion control.
This was posted in another thread. In it has a recipe for the dough you want with the nutrition info!
I love, love, love pizza too! I've had to give it up on it for the most part but every so often i'll still indulge a bit. I would suggest to stay away from frozen pizzas, diet or not. I like the whole wheat crust from Trader Joe's, it's pre-made and all natural, no funky preservatives or added fats or flavors. I don't have a recipe for you but try epicurious.com or cookinglight.com, I get most of my recipes from those two sites and if anything ever seems to heavy, I just substitute ingredients to make it healthier. I would definitely stick to veggie pizzas and use low or non-fat cheese or no cheese at all.
Try using pitas or whole wheat english muffins instead of pizza dough, it'll be a lot healthier and easier to control portions. One individual pita pizza with a side salad should be enough food to cover one meal rather than the usual 2-3 slices that one usually consumes.
As far as toppings, just consider all things healthy, lean proteins, veggies and light sauces.
I had a recipe in a grilling cookbook for grilled chicken pizza. You marinate the chicken in a little olive oil and garlic. (I think I just used garlic powder) and then grill it up. Once it is done, slice it up into chunks. Take whole wheat tortillas, brush them with the olive oil, maybe some garlic powder or whatever spices you like. Then top with some low fat mozzerella, the chicken, tomatos, and whatever veggies you like. Stick it right on the grill till the cheese is melted and the tortilla is crispy. This is yummy! I don't have the recipe in front of me, so I am going by memory. But you get the jist of it! I think I will make that for dinner. This is a great summer recipe if you have a garden.
try using a tortilla or pita as the crust and use things like turkey pepperoni and FF cheese or lots of veggies
WOW, thanks for all the super-delicious ideas!
I have a couple of places to look now for good recipes, plus great ideas to use when I don't have time to make pizza dough. I'll definitely have to try the turkey pepperoni, too--pepperoni is my absolute favorite, with jalapenos and tomato slices especially! I just assumed I'd have to give it up entirely.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This will keep me busy with pizza for a while.
Speaking of addictions...when my DH asked what the Pita Pit was and I replied that it was the place I went to feed my falafel addiction, my son asked, "Is that a kind of animal?" LOL!
I am a pizza junkie, as well. I can't live w/o it. I was having a craving for it, but obviously can't eat it, as I'm on this site, watching my food intake. So my husband improvised. All these ideas above, all sounded good. Mine is sorda similiar. He took a whole wheat tortilla shell. Put pasta sauce on it. We had bought a prepackaged bag of grilled chicken pieces. Added that. And then added fat free shredded mozarella cheese. Popped it in the oven, directly on the rack, and although it was a bit tough keeping it from sliding thru the cracks, we wound up getting it very crispy, and it totally satisfied my pizza craving!! I think the fat free cheese helped tremendously!
And you can't even tell it's fat free.
I recommend flatbread-style California Pizza Kitchen Crisp Thin Crust White Pizza with spinach. You can find it in any Wal-Mart store in frozen section. The nutrition facts are even listed in Calorie Count Plus. The amount of calories in the whole pizza is 870 and 36g of fat. You can even check this site for recommendations: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07021/754946-3 4.stm
have you tried a portabella pizza? Its the lowest cal way to satisfy a pizza craving. search it in the recipe section, its amazing!
Do you have the Safeway food store chain near you? They have a great new store brand out called Eating Right and a couple different pizzas. They have this amazing bbq chicken pizza that's pretty generous and under 300 calories for the whole thing, I think. Definitely enough for lunch. Otherwise, lean cuisine type pizzas are getting way better than the nastiness they used to be...
