Healthy Snacks
This was posted in the Weigh In thread. I created a topic in the "Chewing the Fat..." forum for this discussion.

I'm not posting my weight just yet. I will do that Saturday. I do need some help though and I didn't know where to post it. I need help with what to stock the fridge with when I want something that's ready to eat. Sometimes I just don't want fruit or leftovers! Does anyone have suggestions on healthy snacks?? Seems like a simple question, but I can't find anything that's not in a box!!
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Are you looking for something that you can fix ahead of time? Does it have to be a chilled snack, or are you looking for a snack in general?
There is always the trail mix route. I would almost suggest the "Chex Mix" route if it wasn't for the sodium factor.
Right now, I'm loving Source Vanilla yogurt and mixing it with some frozen berries. Easy to keep, I don't even thaw the berries, just pull them straight out of the freezer! And pick up a few different kinds of berries so you have some variety. I also keep veggies chopped up and I enjoy keeping some hard boiled eggs in the fridge (they last a week if you don't shell them). Oh, with the yogurt mentioned above, try slicing fresh fruit into it too, I am loving it with cantaloupe, apples and bananas.
Amy, not sure how you feel about yogurt (I personally don't like it but I know a lot of people do). What if you had some individual yogurts and some homemade granola mix to sprinkle on top as well as fresh fruit to mix in?
I think omelets can be whipped up pretty quickly as well, especially if you have a carton of the liquid eggs (Egg Beaters I think they're called?) If using real eggs, leave the yolk out for a very low cal/high protein snack.
Instead of using bread or wraps, try using large lettuce leaves for a wrap- you can make it veggie only or add some lean meat.
That's all I can think of for the moment, I'll chime back in if any other ideas come to mind!
Thanks everyone. I've tried the yogurt thing and I really do want to like it, but I just don't. Trail mix is ok sometimes. I don' really know what I'm looking for. Things that I can make ahead would be good too. The only thing I ever do that with is pasta though. Any other suggestions??
My snack addiction lately has been low-fat cottage cheese (like 2% small curd or lower). It has less than 100 calories and is high in protein. You can mix all kinds of things into cottage cheese; I prefer sugar-free applesauce.
Maddiegirl - thanks for the thought of keeping hard boiled eggs in the fridge! That thought had never occurred to me!
Hard boiled eggs and cottage cheese! I like both of them. I will try that and see how I do. I used to get cottage cheese all the time. I find that when I have it, I crave it all the time. Just like when I make soup. Weird!!
