Healthy vegan dessert?

Quote  |  Reply

I've looked all over my local health food stores but I can't really find any lower cal vegan desert. All of the things I find are cookies and stuff like that, which aren't really healthy once you get down to it. The only thing I've found are rice cakes and lets face it, those don't feel like dessert no matter how you much you try to convince yourself. I've tried soy yogurt but I'm not too fond of it. Any suggestions?

It has to be:
Vegan
Healthy
Preferably low cal
Chocolate-y would be ideal

Thanks in advance. Laughing

How motivated are you?  I usually find that I can make just about anything to suit my tastes...of course it isn't pre-packaged or grab-n-go without some planning.

Suggestion - make air-popped popcorn balls with molasses and vegan chocolate chips.  :)  A little will go a long way (popcorn filler) and it will taste chocolaty and sinful without being too high-calorie (as long as you don't overdo the molasses...use as "glue" not "coating").

These are the things that I eat for dessert as a vegan:

  • Homemade kettle corn (air-popped popcorn, agave nectar, salt, cinnamon)
  • Frozen banana (1 medium banana, 1 square of melted dark chocolate, drizzled over banana and then frozen. Feel free to sprinkle with nuts or flaxseeds.)
  • Squares of dark chocolate (Whole Foods sells pre-packaged single squares of Endangered Species dark chocolate in various flavors
  • Many non-dairy companies make frozen pops, including fudge bars and things, pretty low cal too. Rice Dream is one I can think of off the top of my head.
  • If you are good with portion control, Coconut Bliss is the most amazing non-dairy frozen dessert in existence. "Ice cream" made from coconut milk, and available in many flavors including chooocolaattteee! I almost fainted from the deliciousness. It is 200 cals for 1/2 cup, but it is so worth it.
  • Zen Bakery makes low cal muffins and cookies that are quite tasty.
  • Fresh fruit is always a delicious option. You can do fun things with it like freeze it or put nut butters on it or dip it in dark chocolate!
Just stroll through your local health food store, I guarantee you'll find some things you like.

Okay so I was having much the same issue.

Then I found this: Raw Vegan Brownies Recipe

Happy eating!

Make black bean brownies.

Thanks so much everyone.

I've had a lot of the different kinds of soy ice cream but, it's way too tempting to just have one serving. I might try the bars though.

Both of the popcorn ideas sound really great, so do the raw brownies! :)

Its not chocolate but jello made with carageenan is very nice.

You can look here: http://www.fatfree.com/recipes/cakes/. The following recipe is from there:

"CHOCOLATE PUDDING CAKE

1 c flour      &nbs p;       & nbsp;      &nbs p;    2 T apple sauce
2/3 c sugar      &nbs p;       & nbsp;      &nbs p;  1 t vanilla
2 T cocoa      &nbs p;       & nbsp;      &nbs p;    2/3 c brown sugar
2 t baking powder      &nb sp;            1/4 c cocoa
1/8 t salt        ;       &n bsp;        ;   1 3/4 c hot water
1/2 c water

Mix the first eight ingredients together.  Pour into a sprayed 8" square
baking pan.  Mix the brown sugar and 1/4 c cocoa.  Sprinkle over the
batter.  Pour the hot water over the entire top surface.  Bake at 350 for
about 45 minutes.

The topping sinks through the cake to form a pudding layer at the bottom.
This cake tastes so rich it's hard to believe there's no fat or eggs in it.
We prefer it chilled, but it can be served ar room temperature, or even
warm, if you can't wait.  It will keep for several days (but not in my
house!), but DO NOT FREEZE. If you do, the pudding will turn very watery.

(I don't know what the '& nbsp's are all about but I can't edit them out)

And this blogspot: http://vegan-fare.blogspot.com/2007/11/vegan- date-cake.html

Anything off of fatfreevegan.com is good. Also check her blog(there's a link on the site), and she always posts such awesome deserts!

Fruit!  That's my dessert.
