What is a healthy weight?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi,

I've just joined and was looking for some advice on what a healthy weight is. I've been unhappy with my body for quite a while now and as I'm about to undergo a change in lifestyle I thought it was a good time to do something about it. I'm about 5'9 and currently a meaty 168lbs, so I figure I could stand to lose a good stone and a half at the least. But I've been getting very contradictory advice about how low I should be going. I want to do this properly, so I don't want to set ridiculous or unhealthy goals, but being new to this I don't really know whether to trust my own judgement. I was wandering what other members advice would be and how they gauge their target weights?

Thanks

J

My mom always told me a good indicator is 100 pounds for your first 5 feet and 5 pounds for each additional inch, putting you at 145 - but that's not perfect by any stretch. You're technically still in the healthy range I think.

It depends on what type of frame you have (small, medium, large). You can determine that where you entered your height, weight, lifestyle, etc. If you have a small frame 129-142 lbs is the range, for a medium frame- 139-153 lbs, and a large frame- 149-170 lbs. Hope this helps!

100 lbs at 5'5" is underweight, even for a small frame.....its underweight for 5'4" even....I don't think that is a very good indicator of how much a person should weigh.

You're misunderstanding the post. If you're five feet tall, 100lbs is a good weight to be at. If you're 5'1'', 105lbs is a good weight, 5'2'', 110lbs. It works for some, and not so well for other weights. For me, at 5'2'', 110lbs probably would not look good on me, because I have a very large frame for my height.

Basically, all she was saying is that if you are over 5 feet tall, your weight should be 100 + 5x however many inches above 5 feet you are, for women. So at 5'10'', aiming for a weight of 150lbs is (100 + 5 x 10 = 150) not a bad idea.
