I'm looking over a recipe that requires 1 heaping tsp.  What does that mean exactly?

Use a tsp measuring spoon, but don't fill it to level, fill it so that whatever you're measuring piles on top too.

Particle woman got it right.  It's not an accurate measurement.  I usually take it to mean 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 teaspoons.

Just stick your spoon in the bag and pull it out. Don't knock off whatever is on top. There you go. A heaping teaspoon. (Although teaspoon is such a small amount, it's hard to think of it as heaping to me. I prefer a heaping dish... of ice cream! XD)

Are you trying to figure out the calories in a heaping spoon?  If so, do as the others suggested: put the spoon in the bag, and fill the spoon as much as possible.  Don't level the top off.

Then either weight the amount in the spoon on a scale.

Thank you all! That makes sense now.
