For the millionth time, I used to have anorexia nervosa. I am now 17, 5'3" and weigh 110 lbs. I have not restricted in nearly a year, and yet I still have heart palpitations. While their severity has decreased markedly, it remains uncomfortable for me to lie down on my left side, and occasionally (such as now), I have minor palpitations with no apparent trigger. The bizarre thing is that I never even experienced them until after my second, much-less-severe bout of anorexia. Is this a normal residual symptom that will eventually subside on its own? Or, is it something unusual and potentially harmful that merits a visit to the doctor? I really don't want to visit the doctor if I don't have to.

Nobody here can answer that question because we are not doctors, and even if we were, we couldn't examine you.

You need to see a cardiologist and have a series of tests - bloodwork, an echocardiogram and maybe a stress test.  Only after seeing the results of these tests can the cardiolgist diagnose your problem and give you a prognosis.

Sorry we are unable to help.

A doctor is really necessary in this situation.

Not being able to lie on your left side seems alarming to me. When it comes to such a precious organ (they're all precious but y'know what I mean), I wouldn't risk anything and just see a doctor.

You may not want to see a doctor (why, I have no idea)... but that's what you need to do.   Chest-pains and heart irregularities always need to be checked out.  You could even find that what you're experiencing is something completely innocent.... severe indigestion often gets mistaken for a heart-attach, for example.

Make the appointment.

I started getting palpitations around the age of 19...turned out I had a small heart defect.  Nothing serious, but definitely good to know.  I'm not try to scare you, but you really should see a doctor.  You seem worried about it, and a doctor is the only person who can rule out anything serious.

I agree with all the other posters, you should visit your doctor.  I had heart palpitations as well, had my heart checked and all was OK, until it was found out that I have a potassium defficiency which was causing the heart to function abnormally.  So, it doesn't have to be something serious, but the cause of it can ONLY be figured out by a doctor.
