Heavy foods causing weight gain?
I've reached my weight loss goal a few months ago, so I'm just maintaining my weight, but I have always had this problem. When I eat heavy foods I understandbly gain weight, but the weight stays with me for about a week, shouldn't it go away when the food is digested? I am definitely not over eating in calories. Today was Thanksgiving in Canada, this morning I weighed 136lbs, after eating aprox 2000 calories today, at 1am I'm 141. (I didn't eat 5lbs of food! just 1 plate) This happens to me all the time when I eat heavy foods, and it takes about a week to get back to my normal weight. Is it just me or does everyone have this problem, I have searched online for this and cannot find anyone talking about this.
Well you shouldn't compare your morning weight to your night weight. Water retention is a huge factor when you do that.
How much water did you drink today or liquids in general? The more food you eat the more salt you eat as well, that just makes water retention higher. If you do not normally drink 3-5 liters of water a day then you will always hold excess water in your body, and even more after big meals.
I drink a lot of water, probably around 10 + bottles a day. And I didn't eat anything with much salt if any. I always weigh myself in the morning & b4 bed in the same clothes, and my bedtime weight is usually 137/8
The extra food would hold extra water. So it sounds like you were really only 3-4 lbs over what your normal weight is at night. The extra food and water could account for that. How many lbs of food do you think you ate?
Taking a week to pass through your system sounds like a while, are you getting enough fiber and exercise?
The weight of the food has nothing to do with calories. You could eat pounds of a low calorie food and not gain weight, or very little of a high calorie food and gain. Also, a pint of water weighs a whole pound.
Don't weigh too frequently, as others have advised.
Clairelaine is right. The only time I could see that happening is if you ate a whole lot of your food right before you went to bed, then it might not have had time to digest fully before you woke up and you might see a bit higher on the scale.
Everyone weighs more in the evening than in the morning. It's not an indication of whether you're going to lose or gain weight, only the amount of calories you eat and exercise you do can affect that. Maybe stick to just weighing yourself in the morning, that will be your true weight.
I have been weighing myself multiple times a day for over a year. This morning I was 138, 2lbs heavier then usual. I ate at 6:00pm yesterday, so the food had plenty of time to digest. I also eat more then the RDI of fibre, I have a BM every morning, I don't go over my calories, I drink a lot of water, I workout 6x a week, but just when I eat heavy food, like the sweet potato and squash I ate yesterday the weight of the food stays for about a week. It sounds like I'm the only one with this problem?![]()
I have to believe that it is water weight. For some reason when you eat certain foods your body is storing the water.
I actually retain 2-3lbs of water quite often, it seems to stay at my stomach, I can't figure out what is causing it though, at first I thought it was aspertame, so I stayed off the diet pop for awhile but it still would happen, I just can't find the link.
I've found that I can retain weight for days after heavy eating, too, even with a good deficit. It takes as much as a week for the "gain" to drop off. Last night's dinner was case in point: a high carb meal with lots of beans (on the salty side), winter squash, raspberries & yogurt, salad, a glass of wine, light dessert and bread. Despite having a 200 calorie deficit for the day, this AM my weight was up 3 lbs compared to AM the day before. I chalk it up to the salt and short term glycogen storage (the carb load doing its thing). It's happened before and it'll be gone in a few days, if I maintain the slight deficit.
