Heavyweight Challenge 2007-2009 - 5 Days Until the Next Weigh-In (Mar 23, 2008)!

This is the post for the Heavyweight Challenge 2007-2009, for which sign-ups were held here.

All participants have been assigned to one of either Team Hare or Team Tortoise. The team with the most points at the end of the challenge wins. You may earn points in the following ways:

  • Each percentage of weight lost is 100 points, and fractions count, so that 0.1%, for example, is 10 points.
  • If you specify your height, each KG/M^2 BMI lost is 300 points.
  • If you specify your body fat percentage, each percent loss is 50 points and each percent gain of lean body mass is 100 points.
  • Each day, you can earn 0.015 points per calorie under your burn you have consumed. This is only if you post your calorie consumption and burn each day, or for all 7 days (Sunday-Saturday) if you post it on each weigh-in.
  • You can earn 0.025 points for each calorie you burn with exercise daily, if you post it daily or for all 7 days (Sunday-Saturday) if you post it on each weigh-in.
  • Every weigh-in, the winning participant and team from the last weigh-in will be calculated. The winning participant will be given 50 points, and the winning team will receive 25 points for each person on the team. Further, the person who earns the most points for a weigh-in on each team will receive 25 points.
  • For each person who reaches a goal on or before the goal date, they earn 1,000 points.

Weigh-ins are on Sundays. You should try to weigh-in on this day if you can, but you will have until Saturday night at midnight each week to weigh in for the previous Sunday. I ask that you certainly don’t make a habbit of weighing in so late, but some people can't always make it on Sunday. Also, if you miss four consecutive weigh-ins, you’ll be removed from the challenge. This challenge depends on participation.

Keep an eye on your dynamically-generated stats, as it will let you know whether you are on track. It will let you know if you should be able to reach your goals, and on what dates, and also how far you have come so far.

When you weigh in, at least specify your current weight and not only the amount lost. In addition, if you do not post your calorie consumption and burn and calories burned with exercise every day, you can post them when you weigh-in for the previous seven days (Sunday-Saturday).

Devbanana - don't worry.  Today was an unusual day.  We went on a long snowmobile ride which racked up quite a few calories burned - 862 calories for 3 hours of riding time.  I knew that it was quite a workout but didn't realize how many calories it would be.  I was also surprised that it was listed in the CC Plus database.  My daily calories usually range from 900-1300 per day and I've felt good with that.  My goal is 1200 and I try to make it up to that but it doesn't always happen.
Lol sounds fun. I've never been on a snowmobile.
I did not count today. Probably no deficit. I rode a stationary bike for 15 minutes, burning about 100 calories. Happy 2008!

Yes, happy new years to everyone!

How did everyone do with New Years Eve? I indulged in some crab dip (my mom makes the best :D), but skipped the chips and taco dip, and came out with an 833 calorie deficit. I have no regrets, especially as the scale finally moved downward again this morning.

The scale really did mess with me. Saturday it read a beautiful 223.6, Sunday 227, Monday 231.2!, and this morning back down to 226.4. Hopefully I continue downward.

I've been weighing in daily again because I like seeing where that trend line goes, and have been trying to pay attention to that instead.

Happy New Years!!!  My goal for today was 190 (our first goal) and I didn't make it but came pretty close.  This morning, according to my new scale I was at 191.2.  Compared to when I started, I will definitely take that.  How did everyone else do on their goals for Jan 1?

Didn't make it unfortunately, despite the fact I was there just on Saturday lol. We'll see where it is this Sunday, since the weigh-in after the goal date counts for making it. :)

I just remembered yesterday that piano is a legitimate activity listed in the database. I might start listing that, since I practice about 45-60 mins a day, more when I get back to school. Believe me with the vigor some of the pieces I play require, it works up a sweat after a while lol.

I did horrible yesterday. I'm too embarrassed to list what I ate. I had this "it's a holiday" thinking like I needed to celebrate with food. Let the guilt flow! I'm back on track today. Ready for a new year.

So, here's a question I'd like everyone's input on.

What exactly should be classified as exercise for the purposes of this challenge? Is it any activity listed in the database that burns calories? There are some pretty silly activities in there, such as shopping or carrying groceries. Of course, some, as myself, mark their activity level as sedentary and then just mark everything extra. But should this extra all count as activity for points? I'm undecided, but if not everything counts, then it should be rather concrete what counts and what does not.

Devbanana - I think we'll have to trust people to count things that feel like exercise.  Personally I don't think things like shopping or house cleaning should count most of the time but I think people will need to make their own decisions as they know how much of a workout something was for them.  For me yesterday, I went snowmobiling (and will again today) and burned a lot of calories.  It's a really good upper body workout for me.  Snowmobiling was in the database so I added it.  If I had driven slowly or if I had ridden but not driven the snowmobile I wouldn't have added it.  Only I know how much of a workout it was.  In addition, there are probably activities that people will do that aren't in the database.  If people want to cheat, they will.  They can say their calories in or out were whatever they want.  I believe the people in this challenge wouldn't cheat because they are in it to get healthy - not get points.

So, IMO, if someone logs an activity in their activity log, they should be able to get points for it in the challenge.

Good point. I don't think people would log common activities to cheat, but again if someone marks their level as sedentary, then they might do that to get a better idea of their burn. Right now I have a script just extracting my activities from my log for me so my posted activities will always match those I've added to my log.

I agree, exercise should be what the person considers exercise. I think it is easiest to say only structured exercise counts, but I think any activity out of the ordinary should be able to be included. The problem is that even sleeping is a legitimate activity and "burns calories," so anything you list if you log it as exercise will result in earning points for this challenge. That could get a little out of hand!

What is the purpose of giving points for exercise? I think if it is to encourage us to actually go exercise, then only structured exercise should count for the challenge. If it is just to give credit for extra burned calories, then shouldn't the deficit points cover that as long as the person counts the activities in their total calorie burn?

Oh, and I did terrible on New Years! Had lots of high calorie foods. I am okay with it because I am doing fine and will make up for it in the next couple of days. And yes, it will take a couple of days! :O
