Heavyweight Challenge 2007-2009 - 5 Days Until the Next Weigh-In (Mar 23, 2008)!
This is the post for the Heavyweight Challenge 2007-2009, for which sign-ups were held here.
All participants have been assigned to one of either Team Hare or Team Tortoise. The team with the most points at the end of the challenge wins. You may earn points in the following ways:
- Each percentage of weight lost is 100 points, and fractions count, so that 0.1%, for example, is 10 points.
- If you specify your height, each KG/M^2 BMI lost is 300 points.
- If you specify your body fat percentage, each percent loss is 50 points and each percent gain of lean body mass is 100 points.
- Each day, you can earn 0.015 points per calorie under your burn you have consumed. This is only if you post your calorie consumption and burn each day, or for all 7 days (Sunday-Saturday) if you post it on each weigh-in.
- You can earn 0.025 points for each calorie you burn with exercise daily, if you post it daily or for all 7 days (Sunday-Saturday) if you post it on each weigh-in.
- Every weigh-in, the winning participant and team from the last weigh-in will be calculated. The winning participant will be given 50 points, and the winning team will receive 25 points for each person on the team. Further, the person who earns the most points for a weigh-in on each team will receive 25 points.
- For each person who reaches a goal on or before the goal date, they earn 1,000 points.
Weigh-ins are on Sundays. You should try to weigh-in on this day if you can, but you will have until Saturday night at midnight each week to weigh in for the previous Sunday. I ask that you certainly don’t make a habbit of weighing in so late, but some people can't always make it on Sunday. Also, if you miss four consecutive weigh-ins, you’ll be removed from the challenge. This challenge depends on participation.
Keep an eye on your dynamically-generated stats, as it will let you know whether you are on track. It will let you know if you should be able to reach your goals, and on what dates, and also how far you have come so far.
When you weigh in, at least specify your current weight and not only the amount lost. In addition, if you do not post your calorie consumption and burn and calories burned with exercise every day, you can post them when you weigh-in for the previous seven days (Sunday-Saturday).
If you have suggestions for how to better this challenge, please let me know!

I found a great breakfast that gives me a good 400 calorie start to my day. It consists of bite size frosted mini-wheats with skim milk, plus two cups of skim milk to drink, and a medium (or what I'm guessing is medium) banana. That's been helping me to reach my healthy deficit a lot easier. I'm still not making the best food choices, though I did make 25% fat/25% protein/50% carbs (or approximately that much), but in general I really do need to lower fats and increase protein a bit, and maybe *gag* fit in some of those vegetables.

Hi all: Sorry I haven't posted any deficits yet. I haven't been very good about keeping my journal in the last few days but I plan to get back to it today. Also haven't been to the gym in a couple/three weeks but plan on getting back to that as well. I do think I'm burning more calories just being alive than shows on the website just because I don't sleep much. At most, I might stay in bed 6 hours and then I can't stand it anymore so I figure my body is using a few more calories to just be up and around. Don't know how that works out.
Looks like it's going to be cold and windy here today with a possibility of snow flurries. Glad I got down all of the Xmas decorations at home and office yesterday. Wasn't a bad day at all but they would be flying around the neighborhood today if I hadn't gotten them down!
I also agree with y'all about what to count as exercise. I know that the lists show things like housework, etc. but I figure those normal activities are part of how they come up with our calorie expenditure for the day unless it's something like moving furniture for a hour or waxing floors by hand or something (something I have NO intention of doing!!!). I'm also up and down the steps all day long at work because we don't have an elevator but I don't count that either because I figure my body is already used to it and it's not like I do it continuously for 30 minutes or anything, although it feels like it sometimes.
Well, I promise I will do better and I think I'll try to keep my journal and just post deficits by the week at weigh in if that's okay. Thanks and y'all have a great day.
No problem, Susan. :)
Yeah, we got a really bad snowstorm here last night! Thankfully I don't have to go out in it. :D
I weighed myself today and I was 149.6 Why was it up again, and so high? I have been working out more than normal, so maybe my muscles are holding onto more water? I don't know... I am hoping that my body gets back on track and gets the signal to drop the weight.
uggg, I am dissapointed, but I am going work out today.
Greyskies, I'm sure you'll do fine. Just be rational; there's really no way to gain that much fat in so little time. Sometimes that doesn't help, but we just have to hang on until the bump is over.
I think I got scared a bit because I didn't count calories at all for like 3 or 4 days last week, so I was worried that it was finally catching up to me. I will just try to keep up the hard work, and eat healthy, and not junk.
Sodium is horrible! I've been trying to keep it under 2200 MG per day, and if that doesn't work out, 2400, and if that doesn't work, well, 2500 lol. One day I did so great all day, then went to this local restaurant chain called Dingbat's (what a name, huh?), and ended up at 3600 MG! Eek! It's hard to be conscious of it, but I think it pays off, in no bloating, and in the long-term, no blood pressure. Though my one friend said I'm too obsessive.
OK, I got my scale, and I got some good news! My BF percent is only 32.7! OK, not great, and definitely obese, but I was expecting, well, far worse, like above 35, or maybe 40.But now I’m confused. That means my lean body mass is about 150.5 pounds. That’s 4.5 pounds less than my goal weight! If that’s right, I definitely need to change my goal, since 155 wouldn’t be healthy, and I don’t want to burn lean body mass. From my calculations, 177 would be approximately 15% body fat, which is in the acceptable range for men. I’m thinking of making this my new goal, and keep exercising and trying to eat healthier. What do you think?I know these can be a little off, but it’s been reading around that same range the several times I tried it, and I don’t think it could be so far off that would make my previous goal realistic. I think I’m going to set my goal at 177, and reevaluate things when I get there. The thing is, that puts me at a 26.1% BMI, which of course according to the BMI charts is unhealthy. But if I really do have 150 pounds of lean body mass, then I don’t see how it could be unhealthy. Which should I listen to?
In other news, tonight I am venturing into unchartered territories. For dinner, I’m having baked fish with some steamed Brussels sprouts. I haven’t even tried Brussels sprouts for a very long time I don’t think, nor have I had baked fish in ages. But I really want to be healthier, and I certainly don’t want to be thin and still unhealthy. Wish me luck please!
About the body fat thing, I have no clue what to think. Me, personally I would keep up what I am doing, and every 10 lb loss I would re-evaluate, and see how much more I need to lose and if it is healthy. I kinda do that right now. If I reach 115 and I am super comfortable and excited about the new me, I will stay there. If I'm not super excited, and think that I will be healthy at 107, then I will keep to my original goal.
Whatever you decide, I'm on your side and supporting you.
Thanks! The fish was actually excellent! My mom used some lemon, garlic, and other spices on it, and the taste was superb. The brussels sprouts, honestly they weren't bad; I mean I didn't hate them, nor could I proclaim love for them. I'm going to try them again some other time and hopefully grow to like them more. At least I didn't hate them though; that's a big step.
I really appreciate your support. It's really nice to at least have an estimate of body fat percent, even if it isn't spot on. I really do think that is the most important thing, over the BMI, which can't fit everyone. I do have a rather large frame, so the higher number of lean body mass kinda makes sense.
As for everyone else, how are you doing besides weight loss, i.e., eating healthier, etc? It's really difficult to do if you're not used to eating that way.
I'm happy to say that I got a nutrition grade of A today though in my log! That's a first. Usually I get B+. And, I had only 17% fat. :D
If anyone else is trying to work on the same, let's talk about it!
I will post my stats a bit early today but my supper is already included and I am going to sleep early tonight.
eaten: 1896
Burned: 2374
deficit today: 478
excercised: 55 minutes of elliptical and bike for 672 calories burned
Hi all: Dev - I'm really glad you liked the fish and you'll get into the brussell sprouts. I love them and all seafoods. There really aren't many veggies I don't like except maybe okra. Just never got the hang of that slimy stuff - LOL. My husband thinks I tried to kill him with brussel sprouts a few years back. He had a clotting problem and we didn't know that all of the leafy green veggies have a lot of Vitamin K, which increases the clotting factor. That's something that people just jumping into the veggies should know about. Hard to believe that something that's supposed to be good for you can also contribute to your death. But I keep eating them as much as I can. And around here, being rural, we get a lot of fresh stuff during the growing months.
Greyskies, I know how you feel about trying to stick to anything right now. I feel like I really blew it over Christmas, not so much with food, but there was some of that too, but I did drink quite a bit and although I always count those calories, it couldn't have been very good for the body. I've only had one mixed drink with dinner tonight and I'm back to my hot tea drinking at night now. Today, I've probably got too much of a deficit but I ate healthy for all three meals and I'm not getting all the exercise I want so I'm kind of watching it. Just trying to get back in the groove if you know what I mean.
Weather here tonight is below freezing with very high winds so no doubt something is going to freeze and bust!!! I brought some groceries home and my husband told me to make sure I didn't leave any sodas or anything in there cause they would freeze.
Well, I'm going to get off the computer, which is in the absolute coldest part of the house (surrounded by sliding glass doors...) and get in my recliner, with my flannel jammies, my blanket and hopefully the cat and finish a book I've been reading. This kind of weather makes me want to hibernate. See y'all later.
Susan, yeah I think I might have that fish once more before I leave. My worry is what I'll do at college. They always have that grill with cheese burgers and hotdogs and french fries, as well as a place with pizza. They do have a main line with some main dish with some grain and a vegetable, but I often don't like the main meal they're having. Maybe I'll be more adventurous with the vegetables though. either way, I hate being confined to sandwiches or turkey wraps when I don't like the main meal.
Also, I can't get nutritional information on the food! I can only take a guestimate. Here, I can drive my mom nuts to read the package, lol. Also, I never know what their main meal is going to be, anyway, though the pizza, cheese burgers, hotdogs, french fries, pasta, and sandwiches are constants.
Ah well, I have a few more days of knowing what I'm eating, then I'll make the best with what I have.
Everyone, I highly suggest getting your body fat percent measured, especially if you are on the extremes of frame size or height! I, as it happens, am very large-framed. I got my new scale today that estimates body fat percentage, and it was pretty consistent with the BF readout. I calculated my lean body mass, then my BMR using the equation 370 + 21.6x where x is the lean body mass in KG, then multiplied by 1.2 for sedentary (search on Google for more information, I forget the name of the guy who came up with the formula). What'd I get? 2213 calories! That's 447 calories less than what CC+ tells me! Of course, the method using lean body mass is more accurate. It's no wonder I've not been losing much over Christmas! I'm now lowering to between 1500-1600 calories and seeing how that works for me.
Susan, your vivid description of your relaxation on the couch prompted me to want to do the same, lol. Sounds so warm and cozy.

Yahoo everyone!!! I reached a new low - 189.6!!! Love the decimal points on this scale!!! My deficit was pretty high yesterday but I was very strict about what I was putting in my mouth. Ended up eating some peanuts at night to get to a decent calorie level for the day. And I ate almost a whole bag of frozen spinach (cooked of course,LOL). And let me tell you, that will certainly clean you out the next morning!!!!!
Dev, explain this fat index thing to me if you can. I don't understand how an inanimate object like a scale could possibly understand the makeup of your body just by standing on it. Are there some other components to it? I felt the same way about the CC BMI because just using your height and weight just doesn't seem like near enough information to determine your BMI. For instance, if I'm 5'6" and weigh 190 lbs, I could either be a body builder with virtually no body fat or I could be the slug that I am with mostly body fat.
Also Dev, with respect to getting healthy food at college - do you have a microwave in your room? I buy prepacked frozen fish fillets by the large bag and for dinner just take out what we need. We usually sautee in a little olive oil or just pan spray but I have nuked them on occasion. And that way you would know exactly how much you are getting and what the nutrient readings were. Just a thought. I know what you mean about campus food. Even though it's been a lifetime since I was on campus, they mostly served cheap, filling food made up of starches and fat. Of course, we had a dining hall where they served sit down meals family style etc. I DID fall in love with powdered eggs though. Had never really eaten breakfast as a habit but soon got into eating at school. Of course, they also had 25 cent beer too!!!!
Y'all have a great day. Very cold here - 24 degrees but no moisture so no snow. Just a bunch of frozen vegetation...
Congratulations! That's great.
Well, the scale uses something called BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) that sends a weak electrical current through the pads of your feet, and analyzes how it is impeded throughout your body. Because fat contains more water than muscle, the current can pass through it more easily. It's not 100% accurate, but the most accurate way of trying to estimate this conveniently.
I do have a microwave, but no plates, lol, and I'd have to braille my microwave I think, anyway. Thanks for the ideas though.
Hi all,
I had a pretty good day today (1/3). Here are my stats:
