Heavyweight Challenge 2007-2009 - 5 Days Until the Next Weigh-In (Mar 23, 2008)!

This is the post for the Heavyweight Challenge 2007-2009, for which sign-ups were held here.

All participants have been assigned to one of either Team Hare or Team Tortoise. The team with the most points at the end of the challenge wins. You may earn points in the following ways:

  • Each percentage of weight lost is 100 points, and fractions count, so that 0.1%, for example, is 10 points.
  • If you specify your height, each KG/M^2 BMI lost is 300 points.
  • If you specify your body fat percentage, each percent loss is 50 points and each percent gain of lean body mass is 100 points.
  • Each day, you can earn 0.015 points per calorie under your burn you have consumed. This is only if you post your calorie consumption and burn each day, or for all 7 days (Sunday-Saturday) if you post it on each weigh-in.
  • You can earn 0.025 points for each calorie you burn with exercise daily, if you post it daily or for all 7 days (Sunday-Saturday) if you post it on each weigh-in.
  • Every weigh-in, the winning participant and team from the last weigh-in will be calculated. The winning participant will be given 50 points, and the winning team will receive 25 points for each person on the team. Further, the person who earns the most points for a weigh-in on each team will receive 25 points.
  • For each person who reaches a goal on or before the goal date, they earn 1,000 points.

Weigh-ins are on Sundays. You should try to weigh-in on this day if you can, but you will have until Saturday night at midnight each week to weigh in for the previous Sunday. I ask that you certainly don’t make a habbit of weighing in so late, but some people can't always make it on Sunday. Also, if you miss four consecutive weigh-ins, you’ll be removed from the challenge. This challenge depends on participation.

Keep an eye on your dynamically-generated stats, as it will let you know whether you are on track. It will let you know if you should be able to reach your goals, and on what dates, and also how far you have come so far.

When you weigh in, at least specify your current weight and not only the amount lost. In addition, if you do not post your calorie consumption and burn and calories burned with exercise every day, you can post them when you weigh-in for the previous seven days (Sunday-Saturday).

I went up two pounds (at least from the last time I weigh myself) from over the holidays. Not too bad if I think about all the goodies and my moms home cook-in that I ate.

I plan to be back down to 185 by next Thursday. I'll say 186 by this coming Sunday's weigh-in. And from there I should keep going down.

Now that all the major holidays are over I should be able to keep up with this forum better.

Good luck bonny08. I know the holidays are tough, but hopefully we can all get back on track now.

The nice thing for me is that I'm back at school, and I have no unhealthy snacks in my room. There are desserts in the caffeteria but I can ignore those pretty easily. Plus, now I have to walk to class every day.

Once I settle down from starting all these classes, I'm going to work on the calculations for measurements so people can post their measurements and earn points when it decreases.

On a similar note, I'm having some trouble with measurements because all I have is a steal tape measure. It's flexible, but probably not as good as a fabric one, but unfortunately I can't find a braille one. I've been trying to find some fabric to use, then measure the bit of fabric used, but so far I'm unsuccessful with finding something long enough (about 40 inches at least).

Dev, I was reading about the problem with measuring and I wasn't sure about whether your metal measuring tape was in braille and you needed a cloth one that was too or if your metal tape was not in braille.  if the metal one is in braille, I would think you could get a piece of plastic or something that isn't going to stretch too much and transfer the measures to it and make notches or something to delineate the different measurements.  i know I'm sounding very simplistic here but I've never had to deal with the problem and just trying to come up with solutions.  I would stay away from most fabrics because depending on the humidity in the air, they can stretch or contract depending on how much humidity is in the air at any given time.  That was a problem when surveyors in the old days used cloth  tapes.  You might have one acre or if it was really dry, you might have 1/2 an acre...  I do title work for a living and in the old days the surveyors used cloth tapes and they were very unreliable.

Now, buddy, I have a question for you.  I used a batting cage today for 30 minutes and it's quite a workout but couldn't find anything in the activities calculator to even come close. How do I post that as exercise?  It's mostly upper body work and I did it right and left handed and have the blisters to prove it.  LOL.!!!  Had a great time and I can do it whenever I want because the owner is a client of mine and told me how to get in, how to turn the machines on and gave me all the tokens I need to keep it going.  I'm just going to have to wear batting gloves next time and bring band aids...  I figure the closest I can come in the listings is raquetball but I'm not doing a lot of running around.  So how do I figure calories burned on it.  This is something I've always wanted to try and I used to play softball a lot but since I've gotten "old" I haven't played on any teams.  But this beats the hell out of walking on a treadmill.  Any clue how I should rate it?  Thanks, Susan.

As for the activity, well it's not listed even by a compendium of activities that I found. However, I did find "sports cricket (batting, bowling)," and according to your weight posted last weigh-in, 30 minutes of that would burn 230 calories. Does that sound about right to you?

Unfortunately I doubt you'll ever find a concrete number, because I'm pretty sure CC+ takes these numbers directly from the compendium found here: http://prevention.sph.sc.edu/tools/compendium .htm. I looked through and there's nothing there about a batting cage.

My weight for last weigh in was 196 lbs.  Cry

The best way to estimate calories burned, in my opinion, is with a heart rate monitor. If I go by the cardio machines or by CC telling me how much I burned, those numbers are generally nearly TWICE what my heart rate monitor says. This is even if I enter my weight into the machine. If I let the machine think I am 150lbs (when I am nearly twice that!), it comes close to what my HRM says but it is still high. I think that those figures are calibrated for tall men, especially if the body weight is over 200 lbs. I keep my heart rate between 75-85% of maximum, which is a good intensity cardio workout, but I still do not burn the calories that CC thinks I should with low effort.

Those of you who are doing well with your programs and seeing losses like you expect to see do not need to worry about this, but I thought I would put this out there for anyone who is not seeing the losses that their deficits would suggest and is counting on exercise calories for making that deficit - you may be overestimating your calories burned.

Of course, the other advantage to getting a heart rate monitor is that it takes the guesswork out and you do not need to find the activity in a list - it will tell you what you burned no matter what you were doing. I love my HRM!

Thanks Dev.  I'll use that figure for now anyway.  I've never played cricket although I understand that it is somewhat like baseball.   Denise suggested the HRM and I'm going to look into that.  It would work for the batting cage as well as working out in the yard and other unlisted activities.  Sounds great.

I was a bad girl the last couple of days, although still under the limit but my deficits weren't very high.  Those darned cookies I made are still haunting me.  But they are almost gone - mostly into my mouth ---  And I'm being Realllly good today.  It's 6:42 and I've only had 745 calories.   It's been in the 70s here for the last three days which, for the middle of January is amazing but I'm not complaining.  Of course, the next couple of days are going to be wash outs and it's bringing in a cold front but still in the 50s.

Susan, yeah I think I'm also going to get an HRM< though I will get a talking one (I found one by searching on Google).

It's also been very warm here, but it's starting to cool down again.

I'm having trouble with calories today, in that it's almost 7:30 and I've had 950 calories. It's hard to eat a lot here at college. I'll probably have some fruit or something but that's about all I can do.

I have a Polar F6 that I got on Amazon.com for around $100. From what I understand from threads on here it is a good mid-range one. You can definitely get them cheaper. I saw one at Costco for less than $40!
