To be totally gross...you'd poop a Payday bar :)

i've asked myself the same thing.

like the fact that one 20oz bottle of soda has 2.5 servings. really? 2.5? that was meant to serve 2.5 people? ridiculous!

no - you would.  i'm like nomo; i eat 8 or 10.  sometimes only 6.

8 oz is considering a serving of a beverage

any beverage.

8 + 8 + 4 = 20

1 + 1 + .5 = 2.5

edit:  *feel a little like tim curry at the end of clue with this* ::giggles:: )

1/2 cup of ice cream...more like 1/2 carton!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what I love?? Small Capri Suns are 1 serving, and if you get the larger sizes it's still only 1 serving... lol.

baker - oh my god i love your cat!

*gets back on topic*

i thought 10-12 almonds were a technical serving...not 28?

There ya go!  My container says 1/4 cup (approx 28 nuts).  Yours says 10-12.  Are your nuts twice as big as mine?  "Click, click" (that was me cocking the gun...cuz I know where this is going) :) :)

almonds are magic, you know. they trigger the release of a neurotransmitter that sigals satiety.  it works, too; if i'm hungry but want to delay my next meal for an hour or two, i'll eat six almonds and i'm fine.

but just because a pkg states "one serving", does that mean that it's one technical food guide style serving?

i realize this is likely a dumb question, but it makes no sense to me.

(and yes joe, my nuts are obviously twice the size of yours.  it's awkward)

My norm is 7 almonds to tide me over until dinner.  If I am trying to get all my cals in for the day though, I will go for the whole serving and enjoy every one!

fine.  no one answer my question.  :(

i think the answer is "no."  in canada, at least, there is little or no regulation around what's called a serving on labels.  recently health canada (i think) introduced a law limiting the amount of sugar/serving in cereals marketed at children (i think it's 12g/serving); most of the cereal companies responded by leaving the cereal formulation the same and reducing the size of a serving.

but 28 almonds is roughly 30g, which seems like a reasonable serving of something as high in fat/calories as nuts.

no.

food manufacturers have the option to list the nutrition information according to either what the usda says is a serving (prescribed number of grams or ounces) OR according to whether or not a reasonable person would assume that the package contains one serving.

sometimes you'll see both side by side -  they decided to cover all bases

in cases where they provide both, you have two columns.

at the top of the first column, it will say "1 serving" & at the top of the second column it will say "entire package"

edit: should have specified that i am referring to u.s. regulatory code - not that of any other nation

if there was an extra column, then there would be 3 in canada.  that would be complicated.

and thanks ladies!  :)
