How the heck did I gain!?

Quote  |  Reply

I gained weight with just 1900-2200 calories a day last week... but don't you need at least 2500 calories to gain, especially for a 5"3, 14 year old girl recovering from anorexia??

So, how the heck was this possible? And will I continue to gain at this rate?

And I don't know how muchI gained exactly, I can't look, it freaks me out, but I'm guessing 1-2 pounds, because me nutritionist said it was a good rate.

Now that I think about it, I have had a tun of saturated fat lately, including 2 glasses of whole milk daily.. but I thought a calorie was a calorie.. right??

Can someone please help me out here!?

If it is your objective to gain, then what are you concerned about? Think of it as you would the prospect of having to remove a sticky bandaid-- quick and painless is the way to go, right?

If it's just a couple of pounds it could be anything: water retention, having more food in your stomach, ect. ... my weight usually varies by like 5 pounds throughout the day.

marissa, darling. seriously. i know it's really hard to accept weight gain in the beginning (but that's your goal, right?), but a couple pounds is completely normal. i mean, i assume you've increased your calories from a lower level? your body has to adjust before your metabolism can accommodate. like opeth said, fluids, food weight, natural fluctuations etc.  i gained 14 pounds in my first week of refeeding.  it was fluid weight and went away (until it came back again, double, heh.) i know any gain is a challenge, and i totally respect your struggle, but try not to sweat 1 or 2 measly pounds.  youre young. your body will adjust quickly and you will need more calories. keep up the good work.

I know, I'm not saying I don't want to gain.. I;m just saying, I steped on the scale thinking, 'oh shoot!' it's probably down again, but it was up, I'm just sort of confused because i know I didn't have enough calories that week, or so I thought?

Thanks though! I am happy, just confused..

Hi, marissa.

Don't fret.  When you increase your calories, if you keep your calorie level up, your metabolism will catch up and you will need to increase again in order to keep gaining. Don't overthink a pound or two, which is probably a shift in fluid levels.

:)

I've been there, and I completely understand. One or two pounds can feel alarming and unexpected when you've just become used to losing. Understand that, because you've been starving, your metabolism isn't functioning the way most people's do. Your body is clinging to the nourishment you're giving it. Keep eating how much your nutritionist has recommended despite this unexpected gain. Trust me, it will be easier just to follow the guidelines. Shortcutting or reverting to starvation will lead you down a torturous, long path. Best of luck, PM me if you need support or a friend =]

It's not that you can't gain on less than 2500/day, but your body needs that much to restore the metabolism and heal the damage inside the body. It's important you eat enough! Eating more will raise your metabolism more in the long run. But gaining water weight at first on any increase is normal. Smile Good Luck.

Thanks guys! :) I'm feeling better now!
And I'm finally getting used to gaining.. more and more each day!!
