How the heck do I log yoga???
I just did an hour of Denise Austin's "Fat Blasting Yoga" and have no idea how to log it. I ended up logging it as "calisthenics, general" but don't know if that's right. The segments had me doing flexibility, strengthening & a bit of cardio. So, what to do?
Hatha yoga is mostly stretching, as I understand so that doesn't seem to apply (though there is stretching involved in what I did this morning). Any words of wisdom out there?

What's the difference between your Yoga and Hatha Yoga?
Like I said, the segments had me doing flexibility, strengthening & a bit of cardio. From my understanding, hatha yoga is mostly stretching. So I still feel confused.
What do you moderators have to say?

Oh. Sorry.
Me not so good at reading *g*
Well, as me (and not as a moderator), I'd say Calisthenics sounds reasonable. It's kinda all an estimate anyways. :)

Hatha yoga is part of the larger yoga system, which includes meditation and other spiritual disciplines. Hatha yoga is what is generally meant by "yoga" in the United States. At any rate, in the Activity Browser under "Conditioning" there are two "stretching" entries. On them refers to "Hatha Yoga". In fact, both entries give you the same number of calories per hour.
Thanks, hkellick, I think I'll stick with the calisthenics entry. If anyone has other ideas besides stretching (again, I did more than that) please feel free to add your 2-cents' worth.
You might consider splitting the time between "yoga" and "cardio" categories...it'd be an estimate, but probably more accurate than just calling it one or the other.
I agree with ghealach that's how I log mine and I do pretty intense yoga 5 days a week
That's a good idea, thanks!
I teach hatha yoga, and it's not just stretching; there's a lot of strength and balance work involved, too, and vinyasa flow classes can be a good aerobic workout. Just FYI.
I do Moksha yoga, it is Hot Yoga and I dont know how many cals that burns any ideas?
Moksha and bikram yoga are practically identical. I can find a lot of sites that give estimates for bikram calorie usage....you might look that up for your weight and such, and then enter that as an exercise that's not in the database.
I actually log my yoga (vinyasa) as pilates...it seems like the most similar level of work rather than the stretching option.
librarygirl,
If you're using pilates from this website as a parallel to vinyasa yoga, you may be cutting yourself short....for my size, it says I would burn 200 calories doing 60 minutes of pilates, but other calculators for "power yoga" online give 400-600 calories (tending towards 400) for a 60 minute session.
I suppose it depends a lot on how hard you're working, but my experience with most pilates classes is that they're a modified version of hatha ("regular") yoga, and nowhere near the workout I get with a power yoga workout (comparing to Bryan Kest's Power Yoga videos).

I have these problems too. Does anyone else think that maybe the "yoga" section of the activities log needs to be expanded?
Yes please expand it. I do 90 minutes 4/5 days a week. I feel its a bit more strenuous than just stretching but i dont know how to log it
The yoga section definitely needs to be expanded! At least include vinyasa/power yoga, it burns so many more calories than hatha. I created and tagged a new activity for my power yoga workouts and estimated 500 calories/hr, averaged from a bunch of different sites' info.
I agree the yoga section needs expansion. Calorie expenditure varies immensely with type of yoga and more and more people are practicing. I do vinyasa yoga several times a week and can only estimate number of calories burned. I'm not sure my estimates are accurate.
I have added it to our list of activities for which we are looking for relevant biometric data that would enable us to calibrate it....a process that takes a while to find reasonable study data of sometimes...but we'll add it if we can find the data!
