HEEEELP! i do not know how to maintain

Quote  |  Reply

Hi!

ive been struggling with anorexia/bulimia for the past years. I am currently 18 years old, 115 lbs and 5 ft 3 in. I am in a pretty good weight.  I used to be pretty fat when I was little, and I've never been under 110 lbs, so Ive never been underweight at all. My problem is that, my BMR is SLOOOOWWW since I usted to starve myself or vomit up to 3 times a day. I used to go with a nutritionist that made me a calorimetry test and it turned out that my BMR was 1080 kcals...I KNOW..it sucks!!..... I just want to maintain my weight, but I am eating only 1000 kcals per day, with 1500-2000 i'll be more than happy.... I am currently not doing any excercise because I wanted my body to get the idea that it is going to receive enough food, but I do not want

to put extra weight...I am happy at 115!

Any ideas how can I boost up my BMR without compromising my weight?

I do not like the idea of maintaining at 1080-1100 kcals!

PS. I had amenorrea twice...first when I went from 126 to 120 lbs, and then again when I lost 5 more lbs.

thnks!

As a teen the minimum you should eat (if you're 5'0 and absolutely sedentary) is 1500.

I plugged your stats into the calculator and the CC recommendation for you is to eat 1750 to maintain. You should add to this replacement calories for any extra exercise you do.

For one thing, no nutritionist worth the money you're paying them should ever suggest anyone (let alone a teen) eat 1000 calories per day; for another, BMR is not an indication of maintenance calories. Wikipedia (below) says it is the energy needed for organ survival only.

To increase your metabolism you simply have to eat more. You might gain a little weight at first but then your body will adjust to the higher calorie intake. At the moment, it's adjusted to your starvation regime. You could also take up weights to increase your lean muscle mass. Muscles are the best calorie-burning tools we have! And no, lifting weights will not make you bulk up.

Build muscle!  It burns more, so it'll probably raise your BMR too.  Plus you're probably skinny-fat (I was in the EXACT same situation as you - amenorrhea included), so I'd highly suggest adding some muscle.  Even though I'm technically burning anywhere from 1800-2200 calories a day logging exercise, I think I eat more like 2500 every day, and I havne't gained any weight in a while (I'm 5'3" and 120).  Hope I helped!
