i mix 1/3 cup oatmeal, and 1 1/2 cups of water with 5 splendas and a spoonful of cocoapowder
microwave for 3 minutes + stir, microwave for an additional 1 minute. (if it looks like it may overflow i take it out).
yum :)
I don't use the microwave for porridge personally because I think it doesn't cook evenly and it tends to boil over if you're not careful. My 'method' is to take 2oz of the dry rolled oats and add 8 -10floz water mixed with a little milk before heating in a small pan on the stove. Simmer over a low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 1 or 2 minutes then turn off the heat, pop on a lid and leave for 3 or 4 minutes. At the end of this time stir the porridge and it should be a nice, creamy consistency.
Only use the old fashion /long cooking oats - much better! Just follow directions on box - they are great. I mix in some dried cranberries - yum.
it sounds like you are either over cooking it, or not using enough water.
if it's instant porridge it may only take a minute or so in the microwave. If it's regular oats it will take longer. Are you following the directions on the packet? :)
I put oats and water in a bowl and microwave for about 1 min, 45 s. Any longer and it's yucky. Plus, I add almond milk after that and stir it up. It helps to make it smoother.
I make it on the stove (the hob in the UK) - i think it comes out with a much nicer consistency:
Just put 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup skim milk, 3/4 cup water in saucepan and heat on a low-medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. It's really easy and it comes out with a great, creamy consistency. You can add a bit more/less water to make the perfect consistency for you.
Oh and of course you can swap the milk for more water to cut calories, but I like to think the milk has some protein so it keeps me fuller for longer... !
I just cook the oats with water in the microwave for one minute. Try varying the amount of water/reducing cooking time?
I mix 1/2 cup oats with 1 cup of water or skim milk (or one part oats to two parts liquid) & a dash of salt. Microwave for 2 minutes & sprinkle with cinnamon. sometimes I stir in a little extra liquid if it is too dry, or I let it stand a minute or so if it is too runny. Sometimes the humidity affects it.
use the stove top. one part oatmeal, 2 parts water/milk. stir occasionally. when it's done, let sit with the pot cover on it or about a minute, and voila! might take 1 mroe minute (if you get one minute oats), but SO much better!
I use Quaker Old Fashioned Instant Oats. I mix 1/2 cup oats with 3/4 cup water then microwave for 3 minutes (no stopping to stir). It comes our very thick and sticky so I add 1/8-1/4 cup of soymilk, a couple drops of vanilla, some Splenda to taste and either cinnamon or apple pie spice. Turns out perfect!
I use Old Fashioned Oats. Bring 1 cup water and a pinch of salt to a boil. Add 1/2 cup oats. Stir, turn off heat on burner if its gas, or remove from burner if electric, put on lid and walk away for a couple of minutes. I usually feed my cat at that time. When I get back my yummy oats are ready to eat. Not sticky, not mushy. I like seeing the oat itself and not some slime has been created by using the microwave or instant.
I think the best oatmeal/porridge is made from steel-cut instead of rolled oats. It takes longer to cook (20 - 30 minutes) and must be cooked on the stove. However, leftovers can be reheated in microwave with a little milk.
I have problem with the texture of rolled oats, too--they remind me of glue. Steel-cut oats are tastier and not so sticky/mushy.
I use steel cut oats. I do sometimes microwave them and get the thicker consistency but I like lumpy porridge! If you want the best results, cook steel cut in a pan on the hob and add water or milk to top it up as you go, or if you do it in the microwave make sure you have PLENTY of liquid to get the right consistency.
I make it at work all the time and just take a packet of oatmeal and stir in hot water (from coffee maker). Turns out perfect everytime.
wow thanks for all the helpful tips everyone :)
i think i need to add more water mayb? i think il try do it on the cooker too cause i really hate the thick texture i get from the microwave..an il probs try a mixture of water and milk! im excited for brekfast now lol!!
here's what i do -
mix EQUAL parts old fashioned rolled oatmeal and milk and keep in fridge overnight. it's perfect the next morning :) - i just zap it about 10 sec in the morning to warm it a bit. add a little more milk in the morning if you like runny
add sugar, cinnamon powder, nuts whatever you like after ![]()
I love all kinds of oatmeal, but I've just discovered the easiest, quickest and for the instant variety, the tastiest - Trader Joe's Flax and Oats Instant Oatmeal. Add 2/3 C water per packet, microwave 1 minute, add skim milk to make it creamy and that's it! You don't even need to add any sweetener. I like to add raisins or dried cranberries into the bowl too. Yummy!
