Help! I just ate Olestra. Do I need to buy some Depends now?

Quote  |  Reply

Oh no, this is terrible!  I just realized that these fat free, low cal chips I ate have Olestra in them.  I would have NEVER bought them if I knew that.  I heard Olestra makes you have *ahem* anal leakage  Surprised and I am scared! Is it that bad?  What do I do?

Relax!  Very rarely in the first test studies (selected states in the US-mid '90's) did it actually cause, excuse me, anal leakage.  If it happened to one person a warning had to be slapped on the label because it is a food additive.  Think equal-aspartame.

Enjoy, the products are actually quite yummy

Oh god.  Thanks so much.  I was considering staying inside until tomorrow morning just in case!

Just beware of any enemies offering you 'brownies' fresh baked from their own oven!Surprised

ahahahahaha

Can you imagine that?  I might accept them just because it is funny and then tell my husband and all of my friends.  I bet they would dare each other to eat them anyway.

i ate those light lays (containg olestra) once, and i never had anal leakage. ahah

oh thank god.  That's what I ate, also!  I had no idea.

edit: oh no, wait, they're pringles

I eat them all the time with no problem, but only have one serving at a time.  Just curious though, how else would you have fat free low cal chips...just surprised you were surprised is all.  Enjoy them in moderation, they usually only bother people with very sensitive stomachs and you would already know by now!

I'm pretty much scared to eat anything that says the words "anal leakage" on the package! On a similar note, my friend brought over some "light" ice cream for dessert the other night, which we ate, and she left the rest of the container in my freezer...I looked at it the other day, and it says "eating excess amounts of this product may produce a laxative effect" ......WTF?? What do you think is in it? Scary....

Obviously, I wasn't thinking when I bought them!  I don't usually buy diet food, but I saw the word "light" on there and looked at the calories per serving.  Since it was less than 100 calories, I thought "what the hell? why not?"  Stupid me!  Too good to be true.

I eat chips with Olestra every single freaking day and I have NEVER had a problem with anal leakage.

I once at a can of pringles that had olestra in them. I has this orange oily poo for like three days. It was gross and smelled awful. Look up "orange oil pringles" on google.

Other than the fact that I poo'd like 10 times a day and had to sit there wiping for 5 minutes just to get clean, it wasn't too bad. But I don't eat anything with Olestra anymore.

^^^^ I had a similar experience, but it was from the lays chips and I really didn't have that many!

I think some people are just sensitive to Olestra, same with sugar alcohols.  I had 2 servings of fat free pringles today and am wearing white underware with no issues to report.

Sorry for the TMI

Not to offend, but why would you eat light chips and then eat the whole package? Sorry I don't usually say things like that.

Anyway I eat they lays and pringles all the time. In fact my whole family does, including my 2 and 4 year old children. None of us had had the leakage problem or the oily poo.

Just so you guys know, if you sat and ate an entire package of sugar free hard candies, you would have diarrhea. Many food addatives cause this affect, its just usually if eaten in excess.

uh, I didn't eat the entire package.  I turned the can around while I was eating 10th chip or so and saw olestra and spat it out.  Don't get judgemental on me, here.

Sorry I didn't mean you, the person that said it gave them oily poo, they said they ate the entire package.

Well, I did not get sick, but my stomach has been making a lot of noise all day since I ate them.  I think I am going to throw that can away!

BECAUSE I bought the light ones I ate the whole package! If I had done that with regular ones, it would've completely screwed me over calorie-wise. It was also pretty much the only thing I ate that day. I was having a chip craving. No offense taken :) But this (warning: some strong language and very many TMI's) should give you an idea of what COULD happen if your body decides it doesn't like them. Also, not only eating big quantities could cause it. I've heard of people having it happen with only one or two chips.

I only have diarrehea sometimes after eating chips with olestra in them.  I don't have anal leakage.

it's been 10 minutes and i'm still laughing at that link. the effects of olean/olestra aren't really all that funny, but the vocabulary used in that article just made it hilarious. thanks for posting that, it like made my day :|

oh yeah, one time i ate a whole bag of sugar-free candies and had diarhhea.. orange watery diarhhea.
