HELP! Bad Binging Habit =[

Quote  |  Reply
I don't know what to do anymore!  Every night before I go to bed I binge on peanut butter.  Yes, its the organic kind, but it still can't be good.  I eat 1/4-1/3 of a 16oz jar EVERY NIGHT.  I've tried eating more food throughout the day, having a little peanut butter on toast with breakfast or a peanut butter sandwich for lunch but nothing seems to satisfy my nightly craving.  I've tried telling myself that I don't want it and that it will just make me fatter but nothing works.  I even get stomach aches afterwards and feel so guilty and terrible.  I promise myself that I won't do it again because I don't want a stomach ache but even that doesn't work.  It's not a problem with dehydration because I definitely drink more than enough water throughout the day (probably 72-80oz).  I've also tried going to bed earlier but that doesn't quite work considering all of the work I have (I am a high school student on the bowling team taking 5 A.P. classes) and usually go to bed between 12 to 1.  Any advice on what I can do?

be u just shouldnt buy it any more, or, if thats not an option (i.e. live with people who like to have it) have one of them put it somewhere in the house where u wont find it.---Out of sight, out of mind.........i had the same problem when i was doing cross country, i was practially addicted to it

go to bed earlier. you're looking for a quick fix because you're staying up so late!

that said, i had a peanut butter problem too. it really triggered binges for me so i stopped buying it. didn't have it for about a month which really helped, but then i started thinking about it again... so i bought some *hoping* that it wouldn't cause the same problem.

it's been a week. i've probably had peanut butter every day... but i haven't binged on it!!
if you still aren't getting your period (as per one of your earlier postings), then your craving for peanut butter is probably indicating that you are still consuming insufficient calories for your body to function (particularly if you are studying and training hard. How many calories are you eating daily (not including the peanut butter?)

please feed your body properly now, or otherwise when you are older you will really regret it.
Ya know, I had a peanut butter habit myself.  It's one of those foods... it's so damn good.  I just stopped eating it entirely, and eventually, stopped obsessing over it.  I think you're just addicted to the way it tastes because it's so delicious, plainly and simply.  I was.  Just don't replace it with other nut-butters.  Have a glass of warm milk, or I don't know, you're so young, have some eggs cooked with no oil on a teflon pan, with spinach and string-cheese melted on top.  I think a good first step to overcoming an addiction to a specific food is to eat "anything but that".  Then we can address cutting portion size and eventually maybe eliminating the habit.  Other schools of thought would have you eat nothing but peanut butter until you're totally sick of it.  I tried that - I'd eat it 'til I was so sick of it I never wanted to see it again, but that would last just a day or so, then I'd miss it.  I've had this problem with other specific foods too, but PB is a BIG one.  I think for a lot of people.  So just, you know, STOP EATING IT, eat anything but it, and know that you'll stop wanting it after awhile.  Maybe months.  But it'll happen!

I had my mom buy me individually wrapped containers of peanut butter. Once it's gone I know I'm done. It's kinnda high in calories--390 but it so beats the 1000 I'd eat with a jar!

You could try ordering some PB2 or Better 'N Peanut Butter if none of the other suggestions work and you are still binging. They're much lower cal and won't put such a dent in your calorie intake.
Are you eating at least 2000 calories a day?  If not, it could be that you are genuinely hungry and that your body is craving the fat and protein in the peanut butter.  If, as was mentioned, that you've lost your period, that's another indication that you need that nourishment.
Thanks for the suggestions and no I am not eating 2000 calories a day.  I had been eating around 1200 since June and had no problems then.  I continue to eat that amount but add on an additional 600-800 per day because of this habit (it happened once again tonight).  As you can see, it's 1:45AM where i live and i'm still up doing hw, going on sparknotes because i don't have time to read 80 pages of  a book for A.P. Literature.

While I don't have any advice for you, I CAN sympathize with you. My peanut butter jar sits on the kitchen counter.....just in case!

I have however managed to limit myself to one tablespoon a day, but don't know how to tell you to do that!  I "save" it for my treat before going to bed.

Peanut butter made me gain back about 20 or so pounds... that an a lack of exercise....

but... if you can somehow moderate how much you eat... like... buy a jar, and make single serving containers of say... 1-4 tablespoons of it... and you empty a jar into these containers.. and label them with how much calories are in them, how much fat, how much weight you will gain if you eat that serving of it....

You cold put them in the freezer, then each day, you pull a new one out....

you could also just hop on a treadmill and run at 9 miles an hour and eat about like 4 tablespoons every 20 minutes or so... and i think you would still have a deficit

lol

i would just throw it away. I used to have the same problem with the pb. If it was in the house, I'd eat it. Now that I don't buy it anymore there's no temptation and there's no chance that I'm going to drive myself to the store at 12am just to buy peanut butter.

I struggle with binge eating, but I've found that the only way that you can discontinue it is to change up your schedule and just your way of life in general. I try to get up in the mornings early so i can do yoga, but if I just don't have enough energy to, I clean my room or do something else productive.

You also have to tell yourself that food is for NUTRITION and that's all.

My rule that I've been following since sunday is just if it's not for nutrition than don't have it. It's definitely hard sometimes, but after a while your body will adapt.

Also, yoga really helps the mind and body to connect, so you get more self-control and peace.

I hope that helps!
