Help-BAD stomach after unfamiliar food during recovery
we went out to a bbq place for my moms bday last night and (though I am a meat eater) it’s been a while since I’ve had proper steak meat. Well, perhaps getting the chili (with chunks of roasted top sirloin- tres chi chi) was a bad idea. I mean, it was exceptional as far as chili goes, but fast forward twelve hours later to me with Super severe ab cramps and various other discomforts (i’ll keep it from getting too too tmi, but suffice it to say I’ve been staying near a restroom). Anyone who eats meat only occasionally ever have this happen? It pretty much has to be the red meat because, other than that, everything I ate yesterday I have quite often. Any suggestions for a sour stomach? I’ve been drinking lots (don’t want to get dehydrated) and having some lemon/ginger tea. I also managed to get down a huge bowl of oatmeal with applesauce and cinnamon (overall I’m pretty proud because just a few weeks ago I would have used this as an excuse to not eat anything for a few days- go recovery!) and it seems to have sat pretty well. But what else would be mild and nutritious? I’m thinking that nuts are nutrient dense but would they be hard to digest? Thanks So much
hey guys, i hate it when people bump things, but i'm in pain :/maybe the word 'recovery' in the title is scaring people off, but really anyone with any sort of experience eating an unfamiliar food or meat again after being vegitarian or something could have some insight
Hey Hun! I know EXACTLY how you feel. The same thing happened to me as I started to refeed. Warm baths helped a lot. So did Pepto Bismol (the pink stomach medicine). Other than that, I don't think there is much more you can do. I have been in recovery for about three months now, and it STILL happens to me, but it HAS gotten better. It may take time, but your body will readjust. You just have to keep forcing yourself to eat a variety of foods.
I hope you feel better! =)
Oh and as far as nutrient dense foods, nuts are awesome! I haven't had problems digesting those. You could also try some full-fat pudding (great calcium source) as it may help soothe the stomach and give you some needed calories. Or how about a cream-based soup? Cheddar and Broccoli is amazing, and like pudding, may help soothe your stomach.
I hope this helps!
If you're still having issues and you can send a friend to a drug store, pick up some Immodium AD. Works really fast! It'll make you feel a whole lot better.
I used to have that problem EVERY single time I ate, and I hated it! Now it happens only when I have a lot of meat or cheese (I'm lactose intolerant) but I feel your pain. I agree, water helps me, and tea. Try something like diet coke, but sorta flat. Sounds gross, but it settles my stomach a little, must be the coke syrup. Good luck sweetie, and feel better!
I can't really give you any advice about the recovery, but I've had serious problems with red meat too. I've completely stopped eating beef (and also lamb now) because it makes me feel so crappy, and I probably have either an allergy or a sensitivity to it.
Anyways, could be the same for you, there may just be foods that you need to avoid, like milk if you're lactose intolerant, or certain types of meat, especially if you haven't eaten them in a while. I remember I basically had no meat for about a month once and had a really hard time getting myself to eat it again... Also, some livestock are given antibiotics to keep them from spreading diseases within herds or whatever (chickens especially) and you could be having reactions to that, so you could try eating only organic meat instead.
I get upset stomachs lots, and ginger works really well for me--it's actually a natural antinauseant. You can buy ginger tea or ginger capsules, usually from health food stores, or drugstores.
My tummy is NOT happy with me today either. Not terribly surprised: a cosmo, appletini with gin, chocotini, and coffee with bailey's as well as chili, cornbread, lotsa cheese and crackers, and dessert will do that. Then today's tuna noodle casserole did NOT sit well at all. I'm sitting here right now drinking tea and trying not to move because it huuuurts. I feel your pain, quite literally! Hang in there babe!
my mom's old vegetarian friend decided to try some steak after a few years of being vegetarian and even though she enjoyed it, it made her puke later that night. so it's a matter of your stomach not being used to digesting it.
After I started eating "unsafe" foods, my stomach did some REALLY messed up stuff. one night I remember I could not stop burping, and my burps smelled like rotten eggs EW! and my stomach felt.. not acidic.. but as if it were carbonated.. it was nasty.
I also still sometimes have stomach pains after eating.. get queezy after eating.. and get really bad indigestion or acid reflux. I have no idea what foods cause it, but i make sure i always have an antacid of gas pill with me.
I feel your pain, literally! I ate chicken at my parents' house last Saturday and was in agony about 2 hours later. I am not technically a full vegetarian but I really dislike meat so I almost never eat it, but my parent farm raised chicken is the only thing I'll eat. Only about 3 times a year though makes it hard to digest.
I actually went dancing after I got home at the urging of a friend even though I was still having cramping. The movement actually helped I think because I felt much better after about 30 minutes of dancing. I also drank some ginger ale. Ginger is great but try to get the fancy stuff that actually has ginger in it. Normal, commercial ginger ale doesn't really have ginger in it anymore.
I remember my first day in the hospital for anorexia, I got a HUGE stomach ache after dinner. And they wouldn't let me use the bathroom cause they were scared I would go purge. Jerks. So yea, it happens to all of us. Just take a warm bath, take some stomach medicine, and then try to distract yourself.
