HELP! I can't stop chewing and spitting and binging.
Asked by anonymous on Sep 08, 2009 in Eating Disorders

I have gained weight because of this and I feel awful.  I just need some advice on how to stop this habit!

Answer

The practice of chewing food and spitting it out before swallowing is called Oral Expulsion Syndrome (OES).  Some people use it as a misguided diet technique, but for most people, it is a type of eating disorder that has an emotional basis.  OES may be associated with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and other disturbances.  Binging is also a type of eating disorder, although it could also be a response to under-eating.  A mental health therapist is best equipped to treat OES.  If you don’t have a therapist, visit your general physician for a referral.
