For lunch today I was thinking about having Vegetable Lo mein from the chinese resturant down the street.

My thing is, I kinda figure, you know, it's only vegetables and noodles- ofcourse stir-fryed in oil and such. I frankly remember the last time I had it, it was quite greasy in my opinion.

My question is, Is this a bad option? Should I op for maybe stir-fryed vegetables and fryed rice (discarding half of the rice or something)?

Or should I just forget about the chinese thing one time? I mean I know chinese food is sorta high in sodium.

Any suggestions or help will be appreciated.

Most Chinese restaurants offer steamed vegetables around here in NY. It comes with a side of white rice and a side of your choice of sauce and is pretty tasty.

Well I live in The Bahamas. And i truly doubt they offer steamed vegetables. But Ill check none the less. Is the white rice better than the fried rice? or does it matter at all?

lo mein is WAY high in calories. stir fried veggies and just a little rice would be a much better option. either way though, lots of sodium.

i definitely keep chinese food in the treat meal category.

When I go out for chinese the only thing I order is steamed chicken/shrimp/scallops & broccoli - they have an amazing way of steaming their foods that makes them taste just fantastic - I swear I cannot steam my food the same way!! ha ha!

I actually looked into this and found out that Beef with Brocolli is a very low cal option. Definately discard half the white rice and you are good to go!

Also, the steamed white rice is much better than fried rice for you.

A restaurant Guide I came across, had Chinese food restaurants as well as many others.

My work every Friday orders from the local chinese place...  and when i started here on CC i thought i would never get to eat my chinese food again... but then I looked at the menu...   They offer steamed veggies and chicken with white rice...   no sauce.  Its on their healthy menu part.  The first couple times I ate it it was horrible (felt like i was just eating a cooked salad very bland) but now i've gotten used to it...  i actually LOVE it now...  I get to order with my work buddies but I dont end up with all the calories.

I agree with the suggestion of steamed veggies and chicken. Another thing that is helpful is some Chinese/Asain restaurants offer a brown rice option if you ask. That'll cut some calories as well :)

These are all good ideas.  What if you asked them to put the noodles and veg into soup stock instead of stir-frying them?  More sodium, but...

If you are vegetarian this is probably an impossible option, though.
