Okay im vacationing for just about 4 days in NYC... and i have noooo idea where to go to eat// what to get to eat// ... ahhhh!
My mom said that we wont really be going out to eat for dinner at night or going to really nice places because were packed with shows and are spending our money elsewhere.... so I know were going to be hitting those lil restaraunts or the venders right on the streets. What should I get? What should I steer clear of??
Ehhh I'm sooooo nervous about this trip because its really going to wack up my schedule cus were gunna be out so late at night and be eating at really weird times during the day... I figure I can try and find a time during the day to hit the gym in the hotel.... but still, scared about what could happen!
I really need to not screw up because right after my trip I'm visiting family I havent seen in a long time... and I know other family has mentioned I've lost some weight... and I want to still look like I lost weight, If ya know what I mean...
But other then that I'm super excited for the trip- were seeing Wicked (!!!!), goin to a comedy club, and being a live audience member for The View and Conan O Brien and visiting the MET and the UN. If anyone is familiar with NYC any great places i have to visit or shop??? Especially shop??? lol thankssss!

Oh, thanks, you reminded me that I am going to NYC in Oct. I totally need to look up this yarn shop I have heard about, it is a cafe kind of thing... sounds interesting. Do you knit? Because if I find it, I will share the information.
ahahahha i totally knit!! That sounds really tight! Keep me updated =)
I'm really interested to know whether when deciding a quick lunch is it best to grab some sushi? or a falaffel (sp?) ? or a pretzel?
I have no ideaaa!

Hey lofflytime!!
I live in CT, so I go to NYC all the time!! The BEST falafel I have ever had is at a little shop on St. Marks Place in the East Village. I don't even know the name of it, There is just a sign that says "Falafel" and it is a little shop on the garden level on the street. Kind of hard to explain, but if you get to St. Mark's Place and just take a walk down the street, it is in the area with all the shops and tatoo parlors. It is a really cool and diverse area that you should check out in NYC no matter what!!! LOL!!!
Have a great time, I heard Wicked was FAB!!!!

Do a google search for the restaurant, "PUMP". Apparently, a lot of stars go there for the healthy foods. There are 5 locations, one on 21st St., another on 38th. But they have good, healthy, "health-food" meals that are reasonably priced. My coworkers and I usually joke when we go there, "We're going to get pumped."
I'd recommend you stay away from the street vendors, they have lots of grease on their food. But the fruit sellers are terrific, and there are plenty of those!
You could also go to PAX or TOSSED, both are make your own shaker salad places, and they are also all over the place. Only downside is that I find them a little on the expensive, for me.
And if you like sushi, you should really try SushiSamba. There are a few locations, one on 7th Avenue downtown, and one on Park and 19th or 20th. Its an Asian-Latin infusion; a bit trendy, but still good. But heck, there are a lot of sushi places to try in NYC, too!
Have fun, as far as shopping is concerned, I like browsing St. Mark's Place for funky stuff. There's also an Afghani restaurant there that I really like--falafel, yum! The Village (Bleecker St.'s a good place to start) is also fun. For more of an outdoor mall experience, try 5th Avenue between 14th and 24th Street.
Have fun!!! :)

Try The Pump for lunch or a snack during the day! The food is all natural, very healthy, and tastes great!
I work in NYC (downtown) and have found that "fast food" Sushi places are all over... good cheap food... there's also quite of few specialty food markets to pick up premade food like poached salmon, grilled chicken breast, salad greens, etc... just stay away from the premade salads...they're deadly. Gray's Papaya Hotdogs is a NYC treat...not to be missed... fruit vendors... the Green Market... get a falafel platter from one of the street vendors and share it with someone - they're delicious, cheap and healthy when you eat only half (and half is quite filling)... you'll end up walking a lot, don't hop in a taxi at every turn... so don't worry too much about the eating... keep it in mind, but really enjoy yourself!
thanks for all the great suggestions! I really appreciate it!
Yeh I agree with gert. I live in NY, sushi is the most healthiest thing to eat. Stay away from chain resturants - Apple Bee's, etc. They have some really nice Salad bars in NYc although I am not sure of the names. You can google it though.
Also - generic eating out advice - don't be shy in asking a server for healthy low-cal recommendations. I went out to dinner and asked the server for advice and she suggested variations (no butter, holding sauce) on a couple menu items I discounted because I thought they'd be too high cal. It was really helpful, and dinner was great.
Have fun!
Have fun!
Wow! Great advice!!!! Thanks so much for this post and replies! I will be in NYC this October too and The Pump looks like the restaurant of my dreams!!!!!
Yep - that's what I love about NY -- you do so much walking, you can eat a little bit more without gaining weight!
I think I actually lost weight after one of my trips.
