Help! Which fitness classes should I take?
Hey all!
I'm new to the whole working out thing - I've always been very athletic but never really worked out at the gym or anything. Now that I'm no longer involved in as many sports, I want to take some fitness classes at my school's gym. But...I am not coordinated or experienced. I was hoping to take 2 classes. Any suggestions from the below?
Kickboxing: Intervals of cardio and muscle conditioning drills to firm you up and slim you down. You will be using punches, kicking, and other athletic drills to improving your day. It is guaranteed to put some punch into your life.
Abs & Back: This class focuses on strength your abs & back muscle to help with great posture. The class may incorporate resistance tubing and/or stability balls
Stability Ball: A workout focusing on muscle strengthens which incorporate such apparatus as hand weight, athletic drills and stability ball.
Step: This class is a cardio-based choreographed workout using a portable platform of variable heights. The step is straightforward and easy to follow.
Spin: A cardiovascular and anaerobic workout on stationary Tomahawk S Series bike simulating hills and valleys, with timed athletic drills. A bottle of water is mandatory and a personal towel is highly recommended. Come ready to ride! (Limited Space)
Yoga: Increase flexibility, release tension and make the body and mind connect in a Yoga class. This class incorporates breathing, postures and relaxation techniques.

Personally, I totally recommend kickboxing. That class sounds amazing, and I love martial arts. It's a great full body workout, and you feel better about yourself, too!
Other than that, spinning sounds interesting to me, as the rest I think I'd get bored in after a while.
Do whatever sounds good to you, though! From what you describe, you'd do well in whatever you choose. : )

SPIN - you'll get addicted - just be ready that the first few times will be tough!!! But when you really get into it, its awesome. Builds some nice legs and butt!!!
ALL OF THEM! haha. they all will help.
i personally would put KICKBOXING at the top of my list. i love that class! sucha good workout! burns the cals and gets weights in. STEP is also a great workout! but seriously, mix it up, go to as much as possible. keep your body guessing. :)

If you only want to take two classes, and if you want both cardio and strength training, then I would go with Kickboxing and either Stability Ball and Abs & Back. The kickboxing class is a GREAT cardio workout, and it will force you to strengthen your core. Either the abs & back or the stability ball class will also help strengthen the core, and you'll likely be able to do those workouts without the assistance of a class after awhile.
This may sound a bit silly, but the type of music played in each class might also help you decide. I've taken lots of step and kickboxing classes because I like the music played in both classes. Step uses more of a slower, dance music-type beat, while the music in kickboxing classes tends to be more uptempo, rock/pop stuff. If I can't stand the music played in a class, then I've found that I'm less likely to go to the class.
As for the coordination/athleticism thing, don't worry about it for the first few workouts. Believe me, I'm pretty much the "anti-athlete," but I've been going to aerobics classes (at different gyms) for over a decade, and the trick is to keep moving while in class and to keep going back to the classes, since the moves are pretty much universal (i.e., if you learn kickboxing in one gym, chances are you'll be fine at a kickboxing class in another gym).
Good luck, and have fun!
