Okay so today I put a roast in the oven with fresh carrots, I am skipping on the potatoes...trying to limit carbs. Seasoned with onion soup mix (not the onions sifted them out only the seasoning husband won't eat onions) So my question is How much am I supposed to eat? Yes I have a food scale. How do I know how many calories are in it or how big a serving is since it will be cooked? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A 'portion' of meat should be about the size of the palm of your hand or a deck of cards.   If you put that amount on your plate and weigh it you'll be able then to add it to your food log.  Carrots (like all vegetables) are very low calorie so have plenty of those.  Onion soup mix won't add many calories but will be quite salty.   If you can find some more vegetables fill your plate up with those because it'll look quite empty otherwise.  And potatoes are a good food... rich in vitamin C and relatively low in calories.... a 'portion' would be 6oz and it would mean your meal included some carbohydrates and was therefore well-balanced.

Thank you so much. My grandfather avoids most carbs and from living with him in my teen years (my mom got cancer) He pretty much has me to think all carbs are bad. My mother has tried to break me of this but it is so hard. I see a potatoe and think...5 more lbs lol. Same thing with bread and noodles. I am finally starting to see that I can eat anything as long as I hold myself accountable for the calories!

Your grandfather wasn't called 'Atkins' was he?  Smile  Carbohydrates is a massive food group and it covers everything from sugar cubes, to bananas, to bread, to peas & beans....  Two things to keep top of mind...

  1. Choose the whole, high-fibre or unprocessed versions as often as possible
  2. Enjoy them in moderate size portions

Then you get the best of all worlds.... Wholemeal bread, for example, is a slightly better choice than white bread because it tastes great (goes without saying!) and you're getting fibre, iron, B vitamins and other healthy things besides.  Now if you were to eat wholemeal bread in big enough quantities that your total calories for the day were very high ... yes, you'd gain weight.  But if you have a slice with a bowl of soup or a couple of slices in a sandwich and kept your total calories for the day to the right amount... you'd lose weight.  Same goes for pasta, rice and all the rest.... a small portion rather than none at all is much easier to work with.

My dietitian actually told me off for NOT including some form of carbs at each meal! Something to do with digestion & it's interaction with protein (I kind of tuned out?) Its one of the thing I have to work on too.
