I'm 19 years old and have been trying to diet for a very long time. I finally gained the motivation lately when the doctor told me I already had high blood pressure for someone my age. I started on Monday, by trying to go on a 1600 calorie diet and have been drinking about 6-7 bottles of water a day. I'm also taking green tea supplements.
The main problem I'm having is the fact that it's so hard for me not to snack. I catch myself staring the pantry because it's habit. It's extremely hard for me to not just start snaking on everything.
My question is: how can I stop this and focus on losing weight? I want to lose weight because I need to get healthy, and want to be happier with myself.
Help!!

Eat FRUIT as snacks!! Or take some fiber supplements. Fiber will make you feel full, drink water on top of that. (Strawberries are low in calories and high in fiber!)
Eat fruit, fruit fruit! Pears are also high in fiber.
Eat 6 small meals throughout the day, and save the last meal (with the most calories) for later on in the evening, it will help you stay full until you go to bed! (stay within your caloric intake though!)

You can go for a walk, work out, clean, etc.
But if you like you must snack, you can pre-prepare your own snacks each morning. Fill a snack size ziplock bags with fruit and veggies. You can have one filled with baby carrots, one with strawberries, one with grapes, etc...

It's not that having a snack is bad. Snacks, in and of themselves, can be a good thing. If you are having just the 3 meals a day, then a snack can hold you over between meals. It can also help keep your blood sugar level. Did you know that when your blood sugar dips, you are more prone to snacking?
Some great snacks is low-fat yogurt or pudding (can find some for about 80 cals/serving), an ounce of nuts (check packaging for specifics on nutrition), fresh fruit and veggies. Rice cakes are good. There are mini rice cakes that come in all different flavors and a usual serving is about 7 or 8 mini cakes. Check out things like granola bars, or the Luna bars. Have some herbal tea, or flavored water like Crystal Light. A few saltines with a small amount of peanut butter or low-fat/fat free cheese would work. Even a glass of skim or low-fat milk is a decent snack. Some people will have a glass of water and see if fills them up. If, after 15 minutes and a glass of water they are still wanting a snack, then they'll have it - but a much smaller amount than what they would have had before as the water fills you up.
The thing is, have healthy snack choices in the house and then, even when the mad munchies hit, you have already done a bit of damage control.

Oddly enough I had always heard the opposite. The expression I was given went as follows:
Eat like a king for breakfast,
a prince for lunch
and a pauper for dinner.
In other words, eat the biggest meal in the earlier part of the day to give your body the rest of the day to use it as fuel and 'burn it off', and then work your way down on the amount for the rest of the day so that you don't have as much food sitting in your stomach when you are sleeping and your metabolism has slowed down. However to be honest, I tend to stick with the 3 meals, and 2 or 3 smallish snacks throughout the day to try and keep my blood sugar on a fairly even keel.

I also find eating 6 small meals a day helps me and when I think about eating I drink water or go out for a walk. I also plan my meals ahead and I am ready for the snack attack which don't happen alot anymore because I am eating so many times a day it keeps me from being hungry.
I plan ahead and make sure I have "room" for snacks in my daily caloric intake, because I'm definitely a snacker too. If you choose healthy snacks you can do it, I know it! Good luck!
I love snacks! I could absolutely not live without them. I just love to nibble on things. Just work them into your calories for the day. Fresh fruit is my favorite and if you geting the habit of having it, you will find you get upset without it. Also rice cakes are pretty good. Sometimes if I am feeling very hungry (or if it was a very light breakfast) I will eat 2 graham crackers (which is one serving) with about a tbsp of peanut butter spread between the 2 crackers.
I eat a light breakfast at 7, a snack at about 8:30, a snack at 10:30, a light lunch at 12:30, a snack around 3, and then a good sized dinner at 6ish.

Try posting a note in the pantry that says: "Do 20 jumping jacks, Sexy!" I have replaced "boredom snacking" with "boredom exercise". When I have the urge to snack and am not hungry, I do some crunches or push ups or run in place for 5 minutes.
Try it! It works!

I agree with everyone that snacking is okay as long as it's built in to your daily calories. Try the microwave popcorn snackpacks. Popcorn (as long as it's not covered in butter and salt) is actually good for you and has a lot of fiber which will fill you up.
whenever i drink green tea it makes me jittery; then i crash and am starving!
i recommend you drop the pills and stick with healty food, a good multivitamin, drink plenty of water, and exercise... you'll be losing in no time.
good for you taking the step to being healthier - and happier! stick with it!
