Help, gained 6 pounds in 7 days!

Quote  |  Reply

hi

I just started recovery from anorexia/bulimia a week ago and upped my intake from 600-900 cal/ day to 2200 cal/day.... This resulted in me gaining 6 pounds in 7 days!!!

I thought it was water weight, but i took measurements and i have gained around 1-2 inches around my chest, waist and hips, so its not water weight! How is that even possible??

I`m freaking out that if i continue eating 2200/day, i will soon balloon up ( I used to be overweight before my ed).

My stats ( 25 year, female, 5"1 - LW: 79, CW 85.6 )

Your advice is needed

I know exactly what you mean. I am 5'6 and after I started recovery from ana I went from being 106 pounds to about 115 in two weeks. It was freaking me out horribly. I felt so icky and gross. However one thing that got me through it is that your eating for your health, the weight that goes on will eventually re-distribute evenly over your whole body. Before my ED i was always overweight, borderline obese. Im terrified of gaining it all back, but now since im trying to eat more, I only eat healthy foods and I work out everyday Im hoping that it wont happen. I would say keep upping your calories till you feel comfortable, your body is just re-adjusting from being in starvation mode. (I know, i was living off of 200 calories a day for a little over 4 months) things will even out soon. Smile stay strong

It can be water. When I was in one hospital I had so much water everything was puffy. You can have edema with your waist etc. I encourage you for the next couple weeks to stay off the scale,no measuring your body as it serves no purpose other then to cause anxiety. Be proud of yourself though I understand your fears that you are taking control of your life. Your metabolism is so slow right now and your body is so confused. Regardless when you increase calories and carbs you will gain water at first. When I freak out with quick weight gain and the fear of it going on past a healthy bmi I try to remind myself to stay in the day. That may never happen and it does not take away what one needs to do today.

it could still be water , this happened to me , its normal it wont keep happening its just your body sorting itself out , your metabolism is probably very low. i know its hard but the only way is to stick with it and keep eating . your very underweight and your body is crying to be fed . as for measuring yourself i wouldnt bother with that it will just make you worry even more . think of the outcome if you get through this , a happy healthy life , and you will still thin keep battling mate h x

This happened to me at first. I gained almost 5lbs in ome week on less than what it takes me to gain one now!

Thank you all dears for your support! I am so grateful to find people who can actually understand and relate to what i`m going through...

I really hope its just water wieght and that i havent damaged my metabolism permanently.

I am planning to up my intake to 2500/day on Thursday and see what happens then.

Yes I agree with the other posters, that it is most likely due to the fact that your body is just going through a little shock faze and holding onto water, don't worry you haven't gained 6 pounds of pure fat or anything!! Plus imagine how much closer you are coming to getting healthy with your new diet :)

edit: deleted. sorry to offend a delicate situation

oh jeez, ebay. jeez.

DON'T LISTEN TO THE EATING DISORDER!!!

That's awesome! Congratulations on your initial gain, and on deciding to get better!

I gained 11 lbs my first week of only 2000 calories. I was terrified. But a few weeks later I was eating 3000+ and struggling to make a pound a week. Your metabolism will get faster as long as you eat consistently.

But if you think about it, gaining a lot in the beginning is a great way to jump-start recovery! I know it seems scary at first, but once you're further along in the re-feeding process you'll wish you could gain easier. Remember that the faster you get to your goal weight, the sooner it will be over. And don't worry about continuing to gain after you've reached your weight. (1) You have to get there first, and (2) chances are that the calories you'll be eating when you get there will only be enough to maintain, not gain more.

You will NOT balloon up. You will be beautiful

i agree cruumbs

ebay does your sister have or suffered from an ed? If not then you can't even begin to compare someone who is in recovery to someone who has always been healthy. Regardless your sister is not this girl who is malnurished and needs these calories to repair and regain.

Edrecovery I am glad you are going to make it to 2500 which is tomorrow but I am wondering why you set that date? I know it can take time to build up to a good calorie range but also I think putting things off is not good. I have and still sometimes but am working on what I can do today to be healthy. Hang in there

Many thanks to you all for your support... it really helped!

When i weighed in today morning, i have actually lost a little less than 2 pounds ( Guess it was water weight since i spent most of yesterday in the bathroom).

I`m shooting it up tomorrow to 2500 coz it will be my 10th day in recovery and i want to know how my body will react to this increase vs 2200 cal/day plan.... plus that's what sedentary females need to gain from what i read in gain form

Wish us all luck to this awful ed monster Laughing

good girl! keep going.  it sounds like you've got a great attitude and are doing the right things :)
