At 900-1200 calories per day, you were in what they call "starvation mode". I was in it myself. It's an entirely different place compared to the world of 200-500 that some group members may have experienced. In starvation mode, your body attempts to hold on to any extra food because it fears that you will starve to death. If you are eating 2,000 calories, your body will hold onto those extra 1,000 calories for dear life because it doesn't think it will be getting any more any time soon. For a person who has been eating 200-500 calories, the body has partially shut down, and will require insane amounts of calories in order to get it started up again.

Although this may not EXACTLY fit your needs (I doubt that you are obese), it has a lot of information about starvation mode, and how to get out of it.
