Help! I'm falling off the wagon

Quote  |  Reply

Please help!  I have been a member for a month now and doing pretty well logging in my calories and walking 20 min. a day for 4 days a week.  I have been proud of what I have done and have lost 7 lbs.  However, the last week or so I have found myself back sliding.  Not so much with the over eating (there has been some) but definitely with the walking.  I can't seem to make myself get up on time and do it.  Why is it that when I feel like I am getting into a good routine, I sabotage myself?  I am very frustrated.  I want desperately to lose the 30 lbs.  I have put on since my husband and I were married.  Suggestions, thoughts, guidance?  PLEASE!!!!!

Put aside the self condemnation.  That will just make you feel worse.

Look at the problem from a logical perspective.  You don't say what time you are getting up to walk.  But not everyone is at their best in the morning.  Try moving your walk to a different time of day. There is scant evidence that walking in the am is better for you.  None actually.  Weight and strength training can see some benefit from am work outs because of the "after burn".  That is a slight rise in the metabolism post work out.  But that is not true of walking.  So just chose a time when you feel at your best.  You might also discover that by walking or working out in general, when you are at your personal best, you can push yourself more.

Personally, I walk on my lunch breaks.  It is my "me" time.

Also don't forget to take a break.  1 day a week where you dont walk.  Your body needs recoup time and so does your brain.  Your workouts will be more effective if you take a day of rest every week.  And you will feel less like blowing off your workout if you know you get a rest day.

Good luck.  Keep walking and pusing yourself just a little bit more.  :)

I think that madamq gave the best advice in this situation.  I know I dont function well in the am.  If i have a choice to get up early and work out or hit that snooze button 5 more times-sleep will always win.

But I am also aware that I am a person that likes to stay up late and functions better late in the evening.  Either lunch times or after dinner works best for me.  At first I thought I would be too full to go for a walk after I eat, but I think about the weight I want to lose and force myself to go "walk it off" in a sense and sometimes what I ate makes me push myself that much more to burn a few extra calories

Just find what works for you, its time for yourself and your well being

If I were to do any of my exercising in the morning, I wouldn't be doing any of it at all.  I have never been an early riser.  Even cooking my own breakfast in the mornings (weekdays) will quite simply never happen.  I tried to change but found myself blowing my plan.  So, I accepted myself for who I am.

The first thing I corrected was breakfast.  I know I won't cook so I scoured the menus of places around my workplace to see what I can buy within a reasonable calorie count while still being filling/nutritous.  Problem#1 solved.  My blood sugar level will be stable until lunchtime.

Next was exercise.  My "appetizer" at lunchtime is a 10-15 minute walk..rain or shine, sleet or snow period.  There are a number of restaurants that serve nutritious lunches around my workplace so this was not a problem.  I walk home (20 minutes).  If I have to walk anywhere, I take the long way to everything.  This again helps me to burn off calories.

I often have a herbal tea (specifically made for dieters) to ward off cravings throughout the day.

The remaining exercise (a lot of it) and supper is in the evenings.  I know that at this time of the day I burn the most calories from exercise.
