Hi!
Like most ppl here, ive been struggling with anorexia/bulimia for the past years. I am currently 18 years old, 115 lbs and 5 ft 3 in. I am in a pretty good weight. I used to be pretty fat when I was little, and I've never been under 110 lbs, so Ive never been underweight at all. My problem is that, my BMR is SLOOOOWWW since I usted to starve myself or vomit up to 3 times a day. I used to go with a nutritionist that made me a calorimetry test and it turned out that my BMR was 1080 kcals...I KNOW..it sucks!!..... I just want to maintain my weight, but I am eating only 1000 kcals per day, with 1500-2000 i'll be more than happy.... I am currently not doing any excercise because I wanted my body to get the idea that it is going to receive enough food, but I do not want
to put extra weight...I am happy at 115!
Any ideas how can I boost up my BMR without compromising my weight?
PS. I had amenorrea twice...first when I went from 126 to 120 lbs, and then again when I lost 5 more lbs.
thnks!
I know sedentary muscle burns more calories than fat. So strength training possibly to increase muscle mass?
Your metabolism will increase if you increase the % of muscle in your body. If you strength train 2 - 3 times a week you will increase your muscle mass, decrease your fat mass, and therefore you will maintain on FAR MORE calories then you currently do.
You are not that tall, so if you are doing no strength training and are not very active, AND also have a history of restriction, then it is no uncommon or surprising to have a lowered metabolism as a result.
Do not worry, this is normal, and it is likely that you can maintain 115 pounds on a NORMAL amount of calories once you start strength training at least twice a week.
I know a lot of people who are about 115 lbs at 5 ‘ 3 who are perfectly healthy at this weight; it is not a significantly low weight; however, it is still considered “ slim” so there is a chance your body type may unfortunately need to be at a slightly higher weight
Your amenorrhea could have been caused by a combination of drastic weight loss/not eating enough fat/losing too much weight or it could have only been one of these things.
personaltrainer had some great advice for you regarding the importance of muscle mass in regards to your metabolism. might i just add that it will be very important for you to have enough calories to support the growth of lean tissue and provide you the energy to sustain a strength training routine. otherwise, any exercise will push your body further into starvation mode and your body will continue to hoard calories.
in fact, it is only my opinion (no stepping on toes, personaltrainer, just my own experience) that it is way more important for you to work on improving your nutrition before trying to incorporate any kind of intense exercise. if you increase your calories to a more healthy level you may be amazed by your body's capacity to rebound. then, once it trusts that it will be receiving a continuous flow of energy, you can start an exercise regime to build muscle. until that point, i would worry that exercising might confuse your body more.
you may gain a few pounds in the process, but you'll get your metabolism working again.
thank u all for ur advices!!
This week is the only one that I actually stopped lifting
I had about a month lifting because I knew that my BMR would increase with muscle tissue. But, I was also doing cardio, so my weight was not stable I guess. Would you recommend me to only do weight lifting and like...dunno, 20 min of cardio? (used to make 60). 2-3 times a week? Or first should I get better in nutrition n then start with the exercise?
Thanks again everyone!!!
I feel sooo much more not-that alone...
