Help me liven this up!
I mad this for lunch today It was very filling, but very bland. Does anyone have suggestions for spices to enhance it?
Tofu Stir-Fry
1/4 pound of firm tofu
7 baby carrots
1 cup spinach
1/4 cup chopped bell pepper
1/4 cup sliced cherry tomatoes
1 tablespoon pine nuts
2 teaspoons olive oil
Red pepper flakes or garlic?
Teriyaki sauce or soy sauce?
Replace the oil with a low-cal vinegrette?
Onions or scallions?
Get some oyster sauce or chinese ready made sauces and just add some with the stirfry. That's what I do and it tastes great.
otherwise maybe try hot paprika or curry powder? maybe if you look up a good indian curry recipe - they tend to mix a lot of spices together
A couple of drops of hot oil ("Fire oil"), garlic, onions.
When I make stir-frys, I make a sauce out of yellow mustard and low-sodium soy sauce. Try adding some garlic too....
turmeric, garlic, black pepper.
Definitely nthing the soy sauce. Some spices that might be good would be black or white pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, coriander, ginger (ground or fresh), and red pepper flakes.
Thai Peanut Sauce
1/4 cup all natural plain peanut butter, not salted or sweetened, either creamy or crunchy as desired
2 TBS rice wine vinegar
Juice and zest of one lime
1 TBS honey (or to taste)
4 TBS low sodium soy sauce
dash of hot sauce (to taste)
1 TBS grated fresh ginger
2 cloves garlic put through a garlic press or finely mince
Combine all the ingredients until smooth. Add several tablespoons to your stir fry right at the end. Garnish the stir fry with a few chopped peanuts. This sauce will keep, tightly covered, in the refrigerator, for 1 week.
wasabi
Marinade the tofu for a bit in sauteed garlic, onions, scallions, white vinegar, and a little red wine. It will look pink and putrid, but taste delicious.
Ginger :)
How about adding some mild green chilis? You can buy the small cans and it would give it a little kick.
Add cayenne pepper a pinch at a time. It opens the palette like salt but has no sodium. My mother taught me this trick. She even used it in sweets and you couldn't taste it. The dishes just have more flavor. Another bonus is thaat cayenne is said to decrease hunger.
Cumin would also seem to be an appropriate spice for this mix.
Minced onion and celery each in the same volume as the carrots. This is called the "holy trinity" in both French and Italian cuisine. I saute these three together in quantity and freeze portions in zip snack bags.
