Help! I LOVE white flour sourdough baguettes!
I am a female, 5 feet 8.5in and 122lbs. I am fit and exercise 60-80 minutes a day every day at the gym (ellipitical). However, I LOVE white sourdough baguettes. I can finish one off every single day and eat another the next day. The baguettes are about 700 calories each (I weighed them) and I know white flour is not exactly HEALTHY...but I can't help it. It's so delicious! I was wondering if there is any danger to what I am doing...
I think that sounds fine as long as you're getting other food groups with the rest of your food. That's a lot of bread-carbohydrates and it would be better if it were whole-grain or something, but whatever. You are active and a fine weight, and it sounds like you've been eating them for a while and maintaining, so if you enjoy them, why not! :)
You only live once. Enjoy yourself. Your weight is fine. I think some people believe that you can always be in the weight loss mode. I believe that you reach a healthy point where you can only maintain your weight.Baguette on!
Actually, sourdough bread is actually a low glycemic index food. Compared to white flour bagels, it doesn't have quite the same effect on your blood sugar levels and should keep your satiated for longer. Just eat in moderation if you really enjoy them... maybe just eat half and pair it with a high protein food (peanut butter, yogurt, egg whites, etc)!
Oh yeay, another baguette lover!
If it's not interfering with you getting the rest of your daily nutrients, then I say it's fine. Sourdough is relatively good for you.
Thank you everyone for all the replies. Hm. cellophane_star, do you know WHY sourdough bread is a low GI food? Is it because of the sourdough starter??? I don't understand what might cause the difference between the sourdough and french baguettes...
Is there a Trader Joe's near you? If so they have WONDERFUL cracked wheat sourdough baguettes. I kid you not - there is no taste difference between them and regular white flour ones and the calories are less - not a whole lot less but at least you can feel better about eating them vs white flour sourdough baguettes :)

I have this awesome book called Magic Foods by Robert A. Barnett that profiles the healthiest low GI foods. It's a great reference book. Here's what it says about sourdough bread:
"Sourdough is an ancient bread with thousands of years of bread-making history behind it. It has a distinctive taste, the result of lactic acid produced by bacteria use to ferment the dough. A sourdough 'starter' is made from a combination of yeast & bacteria growing inside a paste. Some is used for making a loaf and the rest is saved to grow and use for future baking. It's the acid produced by the bacterial culture that makes a poor blood sugar choice a better one."
Interesting tidbit: "one study using sourdough bread made with specific strains of bacteria found that it could reduce gluten intolerance in people sensitive to wheat gluten.
The book also says that one 30 g (1 oz) serving is considered low GI. Eat two servings (like in a sandwich) and it becomes a medium GI food.
